ok so im planning to change my melody maker quite a bit and now that ive changed the pup one of the things i was thinking of doing was adding a scratchplate....so heres a REALLY quick pic that i did in paint just to give you an idea of what design i would have... its meant to be metal diamond platey stuff (you have to squint for it to look anywhere near decent lol).
which do you think looks better- scratchplate or no scratchplate???

Sambo no scratchplate imho

Personally, I'd agree with Keith - I'm not a fan of those metal-plate type things! But if you like it, go for it! Hell, my main guitar is a (fast-fading, admittedly) silver LP, so what do I know?
Incidentally, with that plate, it looks kind of like those Ibanez' that Omar from the Mars Volta plays, I think.
I think it's cool, if that's what you want. :)
Incidentally Sambo, where did you get your guitar from?

+1
No scratchplate. I like the stripped plain hot rod look.

ok thanks guys.... willo i got it from coda music (they have a branch in luton) second hand for £350... not sure what they retail now though... why do you ask??? (mines in black btw not red...)

oh just curious, thanks for letting me know. I've wanted some p90s for a while, so I was going to get a Jazzmaster, realised I couldn't afford it and started looking at the LP DC's, which seem to be relatively common, but I haven't seen a new melody maker anywhere.
-
yer they're pretty hard to find.... i looked on the web earlier today and they cost anything between £450-£550 brand new so unless you can find a decent used melody maker then a DC is probably your best bet.... having said that there really isnt much difference between the two except for the extra pickup which i really dont miss at all and i've hopefully solved that problem anyway by getting a tapped BKP....
but whichever one you get will sound awesome because p-90's are the best! :P

I think it would look ok without the treadplate design, it would have to be a plain white scratchplate, then I'd like it! It is better without it though.
-
no scratch plate in my opinion too
-
wow i didnt expect such a unanymous 'no'! is it just the poor drawing or do you all not like the idea of a scratchplate on it at all?
-
I think it looks better without one at all.
-
ok thanks beatle. i guess it would help a lot if i could see it with a scratchplate in real life or at least a picture of a real life one not done in paint lol.... im still undecided at the moment...
-
I actually quite like the shape of the scratchplate, I'm just not big on the colour, that's all.
-
what colour do you think would match a black guitar??
-
depends on the vibe you're going for. white would give it that classic old danelectro look...

yer spose your right.... im not really going for a particular look... same as when i bought my bkp pup i wasnt really going for a particular tone- im still exploring ideas when it comes to anything to do with guitars so im just experimenting basically....(im only 15 you see...).
but the white does look cool so i may well go for that... thanks...
-
tortoiseshell on black jazzmasters looks cool too, especially with white binding and cream pickups.
But its only my opinion! Mess around with colour combinations and see what you like, thats most important! :D
-
thats probably exactly what ill do willo cheers mate...

This is the Ebony LP Junior and the sunburst where you can see the shape better. The scratchplate is what Gibson used for years.

Musicians Friend are doing the Juniors for $645.

cheers for the link Phil :D
-
yer cheers for the pics phil...
just out of interest... what are the main differences between a junior and a melody maker???
-
MOJO! Is the difference. I'm getting one in a week or so, should all go to plan.
Oh, and I'd stick a Les Paul Junior scratchplate on your Melody Maker.

The junior has a wraparound bridge tailpiece (you lose the tunamatic but pick up a lot of sustain), and it has a thicker body (or used to - I am not sure on the new one).
-
ahh i see....
so gochaz which one has the mojo???? :?

You know I'm not sure but I think jazzmaster pups aren't quite the same, they apparently sound thinner than soapbars. I'd go with the stripped down rod look too. But maybe powdercoated diamond plate would work? I know if I make the gold body that'll soon be spare into an esquire it's getting a black diamond plate pickguard.
-
kool a black one would look pretty good actually...
just thought tortoise shell would go nicely with mine because my pup is kind of browny/red/orangey kinda colour (because its so distressed) so the colours might match quite well
-
Well, personally I believe that the one with the mojo is the Junior, as it is the one I am buying. It's up to you of course. The junior is just a more traditional model, I prefer the look, the headstock size, the finish, etc.
-
well i cant really judge which has mojo in terms of sound because ive never played a junior but im guessing all round the junior probably does have the edge on the MM. how much is the junior your getting i might get one as my next guitar... i just love p-90's soooooooo much!!!!
