Title: Is this a good combo!
Post by: Blktiger0 on February 25, 2012, 04:04:25 AM
I currently play a Les Paul Standard with Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the Bridge and AlNiCo II Pro in the neck. I like everything about these pickups except the following:

They both need more output
The AlNiCo II Pro needs less Bass, More Mids, and more Clarity
The Pearly Gates can be a tad thin

I especiall Like:
The treble content/brightness of the PG
The Smoothness of the A2P when used with high gain

Keeping that in mind, the combo I am considering is a Cold Sweat in the Bridge and a VHII in the Neck. Would that be a good choice given what I've said above? I would probably be putting these pickups in a Gibson Flying V Standard, or else my Les Paul Standard, but most likely the V.

Other than that, the gear I'm using is:
Egnater Vengeance
Dunlop Crybaby Original Wah
DigiTech Hardwire TL-2 (I don't use it with the Vengeance, or really much at all)
MXR 10-Band EQ
ISP Decimator

TL;DR

Would a Cold Sweat in the Bridge and a VHII in the neck be a good combo for in a Gibson V?

They will certainly match the V. It surprises me you want to step from alnico II to a ceramic bridge. You might want to consider RiffRaffs too.

Cold sweat set will be good or Cold sweat bridge and VH2 neck

Will be very different to the Alnico 2 pickups you are used to - especially the CS bridge with it's ceramic magnet
It may sound fuller than the Pearly Gates which does sound thin to me

Consider swapping pots to some 500k or 550k and a Jensen 0.022uF cap too - will make a big improvement.

The Vengeance is epic ;) If you want, I can direct you to some clips I have

Well, I play Metal along the lines of Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, Black Label Society, Five Finger Death Punch, etc in my band, soit shouldn't really be a problem. I play pretty much any genre that involves guitar, though, so for lower-gain stuff, I'll stick to my LP.

I already have 500k pots, but I've never checked the caps. I'll probably do that, though

It looks like this would be a great choice, though :D

Please do  :D

I got an Egnater MOD50, but the Vengeance/Armageddon seems like interesting amps.

cold sweat bridge for the V (I'd actually pick the miracle man for those bands, but the cold sweat can get pretty close)
riff raff or VHII bridge for the les paul

for the neck, guess the cold sweat neck is a safe bet for a slightly middier voicing, hotter but clearer overall tone and tighter bass response for both guitars

I agree with Eric on the Cold Sweat set for the V. The bridge will definitely blow away the PG in terms of punch and output. The neck will have less boominess but maybe a tad brighter than what you are used to.

I use the CS bridge with an Abraxas neck - I can imagine that combination to work for you as well.

Cheers Stephan
