Any thoughts on the Zoom Q3HD? any good alternatives I should check out first?
Mainly looking for something to record jam sessions, backing tracks etc.

Just had a look at the specs, and it looks good IMO.
I already have a couple of Zoom sound recorders, and I really rate them !
This seems to add 1020p HD video capture capability, so I think I am going to buy one !

Look in the slide clip i've just posted in the players section, that was recorded with a Q3HD. And a few of my other videos.
I think they are great but they are all about the audio quality and ability to record band levels.
The video quality is so-so, pretty average in lower light but not bad in full daylight.
The lens is small so I doubt whether there's much point in it being HD, the digital information is probably much more than the optical information the lens can supply.
So yeah it's good but for £200 somebody should be able to make a camcorder with a decent glass optical lens with decent condenser mics. Zoom has filled a niche and I take mine everywhere but sometimes wish Sony would jump on the bandwagon so I could get video quality to mach the audio.

Nice vid!
Thanks for the replies guys, that's pretty much what I'm looking for, decent audio and the ability to recognise people and make out what their fingers are doing at fairly close range.

I got one a while back and really like it for what it is
Does a much better job soundwise than the mics on my panasonic camera but the panasonic is way better for picture.
As far as low lighting goes - the secret is to illuminate your subject well as if you were taking photos etc
Pretend you are in a movie studio and imagine how much lighting is used - apply a little of that principle - will pay dividends

Finally got one.
Really pleased with the sound and vid quality and the fact the interface is very usable whilst drunk.
Battery life is a bit shitee, but over all a very good purchase.

Pleased it turned out good for you Lezard :D

We use the ZOOM H1 handy recorder for practice sessions. Its alot cheaper, and damn good!
