Now i know Bareknucklee is a guitarist forum but i thought id share this as i need to know if people are reading the content im putting the effort into online!
Short info: I have lost nearly 2 stone over the past 18 months and learnt a lot about bodybuilding and geenral health and fitness, and wanted to share it with everyone, as people keep asking me how i do it in real life anyway!

its basicly been a dramatic change in diet, with a half decent gym effort. I Cant stress how much of a difference just cleaning up your diet can make. no need for these atkins style fads though

Yeah it's simple at the end of the day, less in, more out. I've lost 2 and a half stones in about 15 months just by making sure I stick to around the recommended calorie intake for a sedentary fat bloke. Walking two dogs has helped as well.
Stick to it and good luck shifting the rest towards your goal.

What are the major changes you've made? I must admit that I've never really been what would be classed as fat but could do with shifting a few pounds. Eating more than I should when I get in from work is my biggest weakness and I need to try to control it a little better!

I think there's some truth in the Atkins approach, in the sense that I now believe the "health industry's" massive emphasis on the evil of FAT is wrong - I believe it's processed food full of carbohydrates/sugar which is making the Western world so obese. It's interesting that if you look at "low fat" foods they're usually higher in carbs than the "high fat" equivalent of the same thing. And I think they push those high-carb foods on us because they're relatively cheap - but very profitable.
I've lost 3 stone, and kept it off, by following a low carbohydate diet for the last year or so. It's not like Atkins in the "bacon and eggs, cheese and cream, no veg" sense, though. I eat quite a lot of protein and fat (but not saturated fat), loads of salad and vegetables and certain fruits. Nearly all fresh stuff, very little processed food (which is often very high in salt, as well as all the other cr@ppy additives).

It says British people only 258g of fruit and vegetables a day, compared with a European average of 386g. Just for a laugh, I added up what I have on a typical day - over 800g! So what's that? "Ten-A-Day"? :lol:

Yep, defo agree on the sugar aspect. I make sure I dont eat high sugar foods, and its working a charm. The point on fat is also very valid, there is in fact an approach (ketosis i think its called) where you make fat your primary fuel source and it shreds off the excess weight. Quite intense though and not great for long term.
Lean meat, low sugar and plenty of veg and fruit = winner

Yeah, that's right - if you don't have enough carbohydrates for immediate energy needs, you go into ketosis where your body uses fat for energy - I believe that's also why people doing the early stages of Atkins have bad breath! :lol:
It's not, as I understand it, dangerous (and not to be confused with ketoacidosis, which is dangerous).
I have very little body fat now, so I guess I've been in a state of ketosis quite a lot! For that reason I try to eat a certain amount of carbs just to keep me ticking over.... I've read that you need approximately 70g of carbs a day to avoid ketosis. I eat a little over 100g, but I exercise quite a lot so I guess I burn that off. I keep experimenting with raising my carb intake ever so slightly - I want to maintain my weight but not raise my blood sugar (I'm diabetic, which is why I started all this).

I read some of that scooby dudes stuff. Just got back from the gym. I stepped up my cardio today. hopefully with the weights a lift (which ain't huge) a bit more weight loss will bring out some definition.

I need to cut down on carbs but if do I feel so hungry. It's all pasta, rice, bread, chicken. Plus a few bits of fruit a day.
