My guitar tech just had somebody bring in a brand new neck, that's never been used, and just look at the twist in this. It's absolutely disgusting.

I believe I read that Ken Parker said in an interview that maple is goo. At least this neck would be a prime example of that. How awful.
-
yes that happens - pain in the ass when it does!
-
Is it actual possible to fix?
-
I also remember from a very old interview with the Hoyer guitar company that it happened there too on occasion.
Cheers Stephan
-
That is bad! :o
I wouldn't be surprised if some of my "collection" of Warmoth necks have twisted from lying around so long.
I believe it's possible to use some kind of heat treatment (no, not "baked maple"!) to straighten them, but that could be wrong. :?
-
I saw people at Warmoth saying that Maple is very unstable if not hard finish, moves with moisture changes a lot...
Not sure if this neck is finished or raw, can be a satin finish...
-
I have read that maple is sensitive to humidity and should always be laquered. A clear plus for the tropical woods like ebony, rosewood and pau ferro - they are allegedly insensitive to humidity.
Cheers Stephan

does adding a hardwood skunk stripe go some way to preventing this or is that for something else?

The skunk stripe is just for covering the truss rod channel on one piece necks (although Fender now use it on all their American Standard necks, maple or rosewood).
Since it's quite shallow and doesn't run the full length or depth of the neck, I'd guess it makes very little difference, if any, to stability.
In fact the skunk stripe often seems to "pop out" slightly. I've had lots of Fenders where there's a tiny crack in the finish somewhere along the skunk stripe - usually right at the rounded end of the stripe near the headstock.
(Edit: this is different from the multi-laminate necks used by many manufacturers - BC Rich, Ibanez, Hamer, Feline, Wez V etc :) - where the neck's made of three or more pieces, maybe of the same wood or maybe different woods, running the full length of the neck. That definitely does add stiffness and stability. )

Well explained, Philly, thanks!

Cheers Philly. exactly what I wanted to know

This is why we prefer to use quarter-sawn wood where the grain is as vertical as possible.
When we make tri-laminate necks it lets us take timber that is slab sawn and turn it around so it is quartersawn

See how the grain runs almost vertical
Here is the process we use for some necks
(http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af305/grahamepollard/58v3/94f0f3a6.jpg)
Cut out the 4 pieces from a thick-ish piece of timber that viewed from it's end would be slab sawn when laid flat
(http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af305/grahamepollard/58v3/f544d6a0.jpg)
Once cut out you can see that the grain is vertical in the pieces we have cut
(http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af305/grahamepollard/58v3/b6a3ce28.jpg)
These are wide enough to be slit into 2 pieces each.

we select which ones will work best together for balance of stresses

Time to glue them together

I was going to say- My Feline has an uncoated maple neck and it is straight as a rod and gorgeous to play on!

is it a three piece in the manner Jonathan describes above?
(great photos by the way Jonathan! you should put them on your website, if you haven't done already)

Completely raw maple, not even an oil finish?

Yes - it is a three piece and it did have a sealer coat and oil coats too
It just feels like bare wood

can you do something like that but with a set neck, and a painted body/headstock?
