Title: MQ or Mule-HELP!!!!!
Post by: gibsongaz#1 on February 05, 2006, 10:51:46 PM
Hi. Ive just bought a PRS Swamp Ash Special. It has P90's fitted but there not particularly nice sounding ones! As I love the sound of the mini-humbuckers on my old Gibo deluxe, I have decided to put a Mississippi Queen in the bridge. My problem is, do I instal a second one in the neck, or shall I put a Mule in there? Any other suggestions would be apprieciated! I just want it to be a tone machine! Thanks.

welcome to the forum.
Is the PRS routed for P90s? if so it won't fit the MQ which is hyumbucker-sized. You'd be better off looking at the BKP-90s

Thankyou. No they are humbucker sized P90's. Retrofitted by the guy who had the guitar in California. They are called 'Vintage Vibe'. They are ok, but not as sweet as I'd like!

If i were you i'd go for another MQ in the neck. A more usual (tried and tested) combination is a Mule in the Bridge and a MQ in the neck. I don't see why it shouldn't sound good the way you were thinking though!

I love the sound of P90's and generally use the bridge pickup more when playing. It would seem a waste to put an MQ in the neck if I hardly use it. Decisions decisions!  :D

I would go for a set of Mississippi Queens, you'll get a wide range of tones from them, a mississippi queen in the neck sounds fantastic and I expect you'll find yourself using the neck pickup more often!

If you need a hb - go the otherway around - mule bridge/MQ neck.  But in my view go two MQs - Neck Alnico IV and Bridge Alnico V - that way you have all the power of hbs but the sweet tone of a p90.

A set of MQ's sounds great. On the middle position you'll have a clean tone to die for wich also very nice with a mild overdrive.

I paid £ 187.50 for the set inculding tax and shipment.

Just a quick note, BK makes a mini humbucker too - the mini-Mule.  For your dilemma now, I would put a set of MQ's in.

I think I must agree that a pair of MQ's are what I need. Now I need to convince my fiancé that we need a pair of pickups more than a wedding-Im sure she will understand!
