Alright all,
Has anyone tried the Mississippi Queens on an SG by any chance? The stock pickups are a little naff and dark for my liking so I'm looking brighten the sound of my special so has any tried this or think it'll work... I like the sound of the queens in general but can't find a clip of them with an SG.
Any opinions or help would be great, I'm open to suggestions for other pickups too...If it helps I prefer the blues and clean side of playing to metal or heavy rock.

Personally I haven't tried the MQs in a SG, but I'm sure someone on the forums have and I think it's a great match. Check out the thread with some of Tims guitars and you'll see that the BKP main man has a SG with MQs in.

I haven't tried an MQ as such, but a P-90 and an SG (or Junior) is a marriage made in heaven.
It'll definitely work, the only question is whether or not you like the sound.
Other suggestions to brighten an SG? Riff Raffs. :D

Welcome! As Philly says MQ's and RiffRaffs are a good choiche for an SG.

Thanks for the quick replies lads, it's made me feel even more enthusiastic about doing this..thanks for the welcomes too 8) I've not heard the Riff Raffs much yet but I'll see what I can find.
I've not found my was around the forums yet, has anyone got a link to the thread with Tims guitars in please?

i was at feline guitars the other day and jonathan showed me a les paul jnr he'd just built with a MQ in it.
i know its not the same as an sg, but i was amazed at how much b****cks that pickup has got. going by that i think its gonna work nicely.

Well, not much to add - sorry, never tried the MQ but as Philly says, they are an obvious choice if you like the proven SG/P90 combo. About the RiffRaff : they are quite bright, very open, dynamic and punchy 'buckers. I've had a RR bridge on my own SG, finally replaced it with a Abomb because I wanted something more modern but I was so impressed with the RR that I bought a full set for my (semi-hollow) Hofner Verithin, and I can tell you both neck and bridge are plain great - should I say "amazing" ? - and that they are spot on if you want this prototypical SG tone.

I have a MQ set in my SG and it's a match made in heaven. Bridge is fat and clear and the neck is warm but not muddy. It's my favourite sounding guitar and my favourite pickup combination.

Gonna take the plunge on this soon and I was thinking of fitting them myself, I have a fair bit of experience with soldering iron but when I looked at the wiring I was a bit suprised to see that the pickups just plug into the board rather then being soldered....so my question is, is there an option for the pickups to come supplied with these plugs does anyone know? it would make things simple for me that's for sure...
If I should talk about this on the phone rather than on here just let me know, no worries, if it sounds like I should be getting a techie to do the work also let me know..cheers.

I don't know exactly what the circuit board or plugs/connectors look like, but I'm 99% sure there's no option to buy BKPs with them. Could the connectors not be transplanted to the new pickups?
I think someone on here may have simply taken a circuit board out of a Gibson and replaced it with conventional electronics, but I can't remember who.

Yea using the plugs by joining the wires is an option, so i might just do that...
I giess i was hoping for a lazy solution :?

Yeah, I'm one of the people who's fought with the circuit board.
I did originally cut the old pickups off the plugs and splice the BKP wires on to the trailing leads (fiddling with rewiring the plugs would be a pain without the proper tools). It wasn't pretty but it worked.
Shortly after that I wanted to mess around with different capacitors, though. That would have been well-nigh impossible as far as I could see. So I just took the circuit board out and replaced it all with standard stuff. Much happier now!
In fact, I might be about to swap some pickups around between guitars when I get time, and this SG might be giving up its Riff Raffs and getting the MQs out of another guitar.

Thanks Andy, yea I'll be doing the same for now, I just wanted to hear the change for now without replacing anything else so I'll just be splicing the wires together as well but I can definitely see the whole lot coming out some time in the future. I expect to be happy without changing the whole lot so we'll see...I was very tempted by the riff raffs as it goes as they're also nice, I reckon I've made the right choice though :)
