Title: Jazzmaster Pickups
Post by: willo on February 06, 2006, 11:00:23 AM
In another thread, I mentioned that I always wanted a Jazzmaster so I could stick some P90's in them, until it was pointed out to me that Jazzmaster pickups are slightly larger than P90s. I've done some checking out, and this seems to be right - I just always (incorrectly) assumed that it was P90s in the JM.

Anyway, my question is twofold - how, then, are Jazzmaster pickups made? What is the spec? And also, are there any plans, for sooner or later, for Bareknuckle to make and Jazzmaster-suitable pickups?

Cheers guys! :)

You could always get Warmoth to route you a Jazzmaster for P90's...

You could always get some surrounds made to fit the P-90's into the jazzmaster!

well...now there's an idea! Any idea where such parts can be found - you do seem to know everything, Phil! I was always hankering after some kind of custom-type Jazz, anyway, so I guess in the long run using P90s wouldn't be an issue, but I'm worried it might look slightly 'odd'.

Also, I guess I wouldn't want to be buying P90s then a few months later I see BKP Jazzmaster pickups released - you know how it is! There's always something new to buy! Regarding P90's, I'd be more than happy to throw a set into a LP DC. The Jazzmaster tone is captivating me at the moment, chiefly because of the guitar tones on the live Wilco album 'Kicking Television'.

I don't think BKP will have any Jazzmaster pickups any time soon.

You could have the stock pickups rewound and new magnets installed.

I was talking to Tim about a pseudo-Jazzmaster pickup, but it is a longshot as to whether it will work, and it was a one-off anyway.  I had asked about putting alnico V rod in a P-90 rather than the screw pole pieces (I was looking to get the Alnico pickup sound).

Getting the custom pickguard shouldn't be too much of a problem, I just don't know the cost.  If you have the original and send it to Tim he can get it done (he had one made for me for my PRS EG to fit a Crawler and 2 P-90's).  You could also try Jonathan Law at Feline, Bob Johnson at Legra or R/2E.  All are on the forum.

Cheers for the info, chaps. It's certainly one to think about!

Alas, yes -- as with my much desired but unlikely-to-happen-anytime-soon BKP Rick bass pickups. (I'd get my the Bartolini 'bucker I have in the Rick bridge rewound, except it's resin potted.  D'oh!   )

I' sure somebody will be able to correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Jazzmaster pickups are a wide flat coil. Generally flatter than p90s or normal fender style singles.

There used to be a picture on the Fender site of J Mascis with a Jazzmaster loaded with P90s if you wanted to see what it looks like...

I have also heard that Jazzmaster p'ups are unpotted to get that 'Fender' sound - is this true.

One thing I do know is that Japanese Jazzmaster p'ups are not proper - they are strat width single coils in a jazzmaster casing.  So you have to see Mr Duncan or Fender USA if you want proper Jazzmaster style p'up (indeed Duncan Antiquity J'master pups are not at all bad).
