Title: Unexpected new amp day
Post by: sgmypod on March 14, 2012, 06:32:48 AM
Unexpected new amp day, well went into local shop to try a guitar I've had my eye on, I ask to be plugged into a valve amp (not a spider) they plugged me into a little Laney cub 10. I left the guitar but loved the amp so much I bought that instead.
What a great sounding little amp.

Well done. I have had mine for 8 months or so.Terrific little amp. If you love it now, you will love it even more in time. I've even used it for small gigs. Sounds so much bigger than it is though it is extremely directional.

Yes is great sounding and takes pedals extremly well, I have changed speaker (more because I had a couple spare) has made a great amp even better

Nice one :D

I keep opening the NAD threads thinking "has this person discovered the Laney CUBs??"

They kind of seem too cheap to be much good, but I already had quite a bit of history with Laney amps when I went out looking for a CUB10, so that didn't worry me.

I nearly bought the 10 I found - it has a stunning sound. But I also found the brand new (at the time) 12 next to it. For my old place, the 12 seemed a lot more versatile, so I got that.

The 12 is doing nicely in the new place, and I love it. But I do suspect the CUB10 would sound heavenly in there.

Never would have tried if they hadn't plugged me into that (as only valve amp near) but really glad they did, is one great amp

That new L50H in Guitarist Mag this month sounds great - really, really good.  Laney seem to be on form again...

Yes seem to be back after quite a few years of mainly bad amp or problems (is odd exception)

I see the 12 obviously has more features like the EQ, <1w input and reverb option on the 12R, but is there a lot of difference between the basic tone(s) of the 10 and 12?

I felt the 12 was just a little more versatile...

The 10 I tried had this gorgeous "plug in and start playing" tone. I don't think it's a one-trick-pony, but it pretty much gave me "my sound" straight off the bat. It's got a master volume which was what attracted me to the 10 over the CUB8. From what I remember it has that warm thick blues/rock "electric guitar" sound without getting muddy - "smile from ear to ear" guitar sound. It kicks out a lot more bottom end that you're expecting from such a little box. There's not huge amounts of gain available, but plenty for most things I do.

The 12 can produce a lot more tones and can get you more gain - we're not into "hi-gain" territory though! The day I was trying them side-by-side I got the impression the 12 isn't quite so warm sounding as the 10. However, the decider for me was "can I get the 12 to feel/sound almost like the 10?". The answer was yes, not identical, but close enough to pay a bit more for the versatility and the >1W setting (which I still use, even in the new place). The amp really gets going on the 15W setting with the master at 2 or above. Get it up to 5 or 6 and we're really talking :D - I suspect at those volumes the 12 can actually impersonate the 10 very well.

Not sure whether the 10 has an effects loop? I just noticed the other day (now that I have enough space to walk behind an amp) that the 12 does. I've not used it, but I have put pedals in front of it - and it takes them a lot better than my VOX AC4 does (for my tastes, anyway).

But there is this certain sort of guitar sound (very good for blues rock players) that the CUB 10 just chucks out without even thinking. I nearly bought it instead because of that. I might even be tempted to get one as well anyway!

What he said, not tried the 12 but the 6v6's in the 10 are more me and does sound great out the box. Takes pedal far better than the TTerror I had. Changing speaker to a better one has made it even better I put a jensen I had in mine may put a G10 vintage in later (weirdly love these hate vintage 30's)

Mine was an impulse buy on Ebay- for £99.00 and was a month old -I have the box & tags that came with it. Mine now has a couple of GE vs in it which reduced the volume slightly but I swear sweetened the tone. This came about because I'd taken the amp to my amp tech guy who has become a friend and I was merely showing it to him and he said something like" I wonder what it'll be like with these in it...." and so we tried and we both noticed the difference. The amp was already great sounding but was even better after. I thoroughly recommend these amps- plenty loud enough for rehearsals- very portable and as I said earlier, I have even been able to use them for small gigs. In fact I am tempted to try sticking a mic in front one of these days.

As sgmypod says, they take pedals extremely well. With my Trex Tremster ( another Ebay bargain) you get a lovely buttery warm tone. I stuck my spare Jekyll & hyde in front of it too and was very happy with the tone. I will be using it to record with soon I hope.

Sounds like a winner, I'll have to check them out next time I'm in Brum.
