Title: Which BKP set for a UV7BK
Post by: rippedflesh89 on March 18, 2012, 08:01:25 PM
So i just bought a UV7BK i am wondering what pickup you would recommend for this guitar;

the pickups im looking at right now is the cold sweat, the miracle man, the aftermath, the ceramic nailbomb, the black dog, the emerald and the abraxis

here is some examples of tones that i absolutely love:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKRvOooPUMM

i play technical death ala spawn of possession and i need a super tight pickup with a really fast bass response and supreme note clarity and definition under a pretty good amount of gain; honestly, i would like to get as close to spawn of possessions "incurso" and deeds of fleshs "of whats to come" tone as possible

i already have an MM7 set in a basswood body already, so i would prefer to not get that pickup again since i already have that pup/wood combo, but i do love it and if you think it will be the best one for me, then i will definitely get it again

could you possibly break down each pickups tone and how it would sound in a UV7BK (basswood body, maple bolt on neck) and also which one you think would suit me the best;

im currently using a pod X3, but will be upgrading to an axe-fx II very very soon, so gain will not be an issue; i just need to something that complements the basswood extremely well and has the best note clarity and separation possible

also, im loving the samples of the black dog, but im a little hesitant to put it in a basswood guitar because it already has some extreme mids, which to me seems like it would be mid overkill, but im not too sure

thanks dudes

Aftermath all the way. Dont look back.
SOP, DOF, Psycroptic = Aftermath. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise. If they do, they're liars and should be burned on a stake

Theres also the Painkiller, but I'd still go with an Aftermath bridge. Maybe get a Painkiller neck? That will really track your neck solos with such precision :)

i dont think the painkiller is a good choice for basswood, that upper mid spike will make it sound too nasaly

i was thinking about the aftermath because i have it a mahogany body RG7 and i love it, but i am not sure how it will suit the basswood

i was leaning toward the cold sweat or the ceramic nailbomb because of the scooped mids, which seems to me it would balance out the frequency response of the basswood, which i perceive as being a whole lot of mids with barely any bass or treble

but i will definitely consider the aftermaths because i do love it my mahog RG7

can anybody compare the aftermaths to the cold sweats to the c-bomb in a basswood 7 string?

Nolly, where are you bro?

I meant a Painkiller for the neck. Remember the Neck P/U is a completely dif EQ to the Bridges advertised on the website. Aftermath for bridge would be a great choice though. I was saying a neck painkiller because it would really track them fast leads great seeing as it has a ceramic magnet. It's a great shred pickup. But then again, what do you use your neck pickup for? I've tried a great variety of BKP neck pickups in all diff types of woods (minus a few), so I have a good idea on things sound wise. Whether you like it urself or not, is completely down to you

i almost always use my bridge for metal rhythms along the lines of the videos i posted

my neck is used for leads and clean playing; as far as clean playing goes, i play a lot of classical guitar and little bit of jazz, but i usually just go with a calibrated set

my aftermath set in my mahogany RG7 sounds great, i definitely like the neck pup and the MM7 set in the basswood RG7 is pretty $%&#ing awesome as well, it's a great combo

i would go with another MM7 set for the UV, but i would kinda like to have a different pickup set in this guitar because i dont really want two basswood 7s with an MM7 set, i just want to have a greater variety of tones from my guitars so when i record, i'll have a good selection of guitars with different tones

Miracle Man set for sure. A major BKP dealer and player over on sevenstring.org always recommends it when people are in your situation, (death metal with a baswood guitar)

I would think a pickup like a c-bomb,cold sweat or miracle man with less pronounced mids and more low mids would sound best but if your playing technical death the miracle man is the way to go! If you like actives I love blackouts in basswood guitar for death metal stuff.

If you already have A MM set I would go for c-bomb/cold sweat.

This sounds like a job for...... The Aftermath! If you want to try something else go for a C-Bomb in the bridge, it's really tight and clear but big sounding because the mids are a bit pulled back which makes it great for fast picking, chugging, and big chords. Leads are incredibly dynamic/wet sounding as well especially with a little delay.

I think it's pretty much between the Nailbomb and Afternatch.
Maybe go with what you think will fit better to the acoustic tonality of the guitar. Many Ibanezes, I felt, could use some extra weight on the low end, and I think the Nailbomb might be better for that.

okay,

so i have narrowed my choice down to an aftermath set or a cold sweat set

can anybody compare these pickups in a basswood 7?

i have been dying to try out a cold sweat set, but i want to make sure it suits the guitar i am putting them in

and i dont want them to sound too thin; but i almost feel like that certainly wont be an issue because i could always just turn up the gain (i normally only have the gain at 40-60%)
