Title: Question on the Riff Raff and other low output pickups.
Post by: DoomBuggi on March 22, 2012, 03:19:41 AM
I play really heavy/intense music, in a metal realm, and I am considering using a Riff Raff in a Les Paul.  Tell me, does it keep the low end tight in lower tunings, and if you have a high gain amp, can it handle various amounts of gain?

A lot of guys are using high output, and ceramic magnets, which some of I really like.  But I my find my self always wondering about lower output pickups, and high gain amps.  The only thing is, I like a tight low end.

You guys have any experience with low output, high gain, and tight lowend in lower tunings?

I think Roo used a Black Dog down tuned for a long time and it worked well.  Not sure about the Riff Raff in that environment, but based on the ones I used to have I don't see why not.

my riff raff is pretty tight
it was one of Jon Schaffer's favorites (as was the black dog)
tightest alnico pickup I've ever played, along with the neck cold sweat (in both neck and bridge positions) and the nailbomb
didn't try the rebel yell, though

my riff raff has a taller 4 mm alnico 5 short magnet, though (that was Tim's suggestion when I said I wanted something vintage that pushed the amps a bit harder), so despite of having the same tone, it's punchier, louder and probably a bit tighter than a regular 3 mm A5 one
but from dozens of other people clips, I can tell the original spec riff raff is about as tight as mine

I have a Black Dog and feel it gets just as heavy as my Holy Diver did. Of course they are not 100% comparable, but the general trend is there. I boost it with an overdrive to get to proper metal sounds and it works very well.
