Title: Made some progress on a 3yr Tele build!
Post by: Oli on March 27, 2012, 01:47:15 PM
Not long after I finished my first 3 guitar builds, life took over, and i've not really made any progress on the other projects that I started over 3 years ago!

However, now that it is lovely outside, I thought that i'd head over to my folks' place and get a couple of days work done down  in the workshop. I've had this tele going on for a long time, and it's the guitar that is closest to being finished (and I have most of the hardware, to boot!), so I cracked on and made some progress.

Swamp Ash body, and a lovely maple neck that is slightly flamey (although the fretboard side of the neck does seem quite soft, but i'm hoping it'll be ok and I won't have to do it again). The neck is a 1 piece, with a Walnut headstock plug, and I think that the skunk stripe may have ended up being Mahogany, as I didn't have any appropriately sized Walnut at the time. Lovely 2 piece body which I hope to finish eventually in a translucent blonde finish, although there's a hell of a lot of sanding to be done. It's going to be a very light guitar too, and hopefully nice and twangy :)

Found out that the centre line on my body and cavity templates don't line up, so when I first put the neck on, the strings would have been about 1cm to the left of where they should be... not very happy with that, so if you're thinking of buying templates, do some measurements and check the centrelines!!!

Just going to carve the neck, then let it settle down for a while before I tidy up the frets. Need to bring the neck into work to get the tuner holes drilled too, as I no longer have a pillar drill :(

That looks great! My tele build has been going on for well over a year now. I'll be very interested in how you get on with the neck!

I was going through my gear box to do some wiring, and found a load of straplocks I bought 2+ years ago :o
