Title: Bare Knuckle 7 strings sound clip, video, experiences etc..
Post by: Cosmitron on March 29, 2012, 03:29:55 PM
Hi! I'm new to the forum.
I've just bought a LTD Viper 407 (7 strings SG lookalike), and although I actually like the stock EMG pickups for metal stuff, I think they sound dry (or sort of) in crunchy amp setup, so I'm looking for more traditional sounding/looking 7 strings PAF HBs, and found out after hours of googling that Bare Knuckle was the only brand that could deliver what I'm looking for (a full range of nickel covered 7 strings HBs).
I'm a Gibson Burstbucker faithful user and used to have a Les Paul with a "The Mule" set which I kinda regret now.
I'm actually looking for similar pickups for 7 strings, but I would like to read reviews about what Bare Knuckle can offer. My major concern is how classic rock pickups would handle the low B string.
Does anyone had a similar experience and would be kind enough to share about it?

Thanks!

I think forum member Nolly has an Emerald set or at least an Emerald bridge in a 7 string and likes it a lot. The Emerald is somewhat hotter than the Mule though.

Thanks! I'll do a search about it. :)

I'm not sure it helps but this is the kind of music I'm playing:

You can hear the kind of 'crunch' sound I'm chasing.
So I'm looking for light crunchy 7 strings BKP samples/videos. :)

Tim actually really recommends the Black Dog set for baritone users.

Emeralds or Black Dogs would be a great choice for seven string. On Nolly's Soundcloud there's a clip of a BRJ 727 with a black dog; it's f*cking massive sounding, and thick as hell. Tim has recommended Black Dogs for 7 string and extended scale guitars, and most folks agree it does quite well. I would research either; I swear there is a 7 string Emerald clip on soundcloud as well. Good luck!

I thought the Black Dog recommendation was for extended scale instruments (because these tend to emphasize treble and bass frequencies), and not necessarily 7-strings with normal scale lengths.

It would do in both. Unless the 7 has a 24'ish scale length, I think the principle is similar. It would work in a baritone 6, 7, or 8, as well as anything set up to low tunings such as B or lower.

I've set my mind on a Black Dog 7 Set.
Thanks for your help guys.
I'm still hoping to listen to some crunchey soundclips one day. :)

Hey!
Plans have changed lately. I've decided to let my LTDs with their EMGs and bought a surprisingly very nice Ibanez ARZ307 for cheap money. Although I actually don't hate the stock pickups, I think it would be perfect for the 7 string BKP experience.
Besides, after some reading/googling I think I've set my mind for a set including a Mule at the neck and a Riff Raff at the bridge. My goal is to nail a Aerosmith/Led Zeppelin/AC-DC tone (or sort of) with a 7 string guitar.
What do you think?
I also would like to know if anyone could give me the size of BKP 7 string pup cover.
Thanks!

OK. I've finally mailed BKP to ask for advice. They said RIFF RAFF (and also emerald), so riff raff it is. Received them today. This is just perfect.
Nuff Said.
