Hello all,
My first post here - so a number of questions, and a bit about myself to follow!
I'm about to purchase a Gibson Special Faded (worn brown) - should arrive this week!!!
after discovering Bare Knuckle Pickups while doing some research online, I've decided that I must get a pair of ceramic Warpigs to make this the ultimate beast of a guitar!!!
I found a pair on eBay that I am considering
- http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320886570863#ht_2184wt_1188
They look like they'd be a nice match for it:
http://images.gibson.com/Files/28797aaf-cfb4-4153-8891-a349744c1490.jpg
however I am not sure (yet) if they are long or short legs... (current Gibson SG Specials are better off with long legs, correct?)
I've also contacted a dealer in Alberta, Canada (possibly the closest one to me here in Vancouver) - they have pretty much the same model (ceramic distressed Warpig, minus the battleworn, and with screws instead of bolts). I am definitely leaning more towards the battleworn distressed w/bolts though, so I will probably pass on what they have in stock. They tell me they'll be putting in another order in the next few weeks, so I may just tell them what I want and have them get it in their next order. If I'm going to spend the money, I'd best be sure I get the right set up.. and I might as well get exactly what I want, rather than settle for what's immediately available.
Next step now is to be certain I know what I want - and what I need.
- so I figured I'd post here to get some feedback.
Guitar = Gibson SG Special Faded (worn brown)
I really dig the distressed look, and battleworn chunks taken out.
At first I was thinking battleworn black - but I don't think the black with white gashes would be a good match for this guitar... I do like the look of the distressed covers I've seen in the gallery, as they seem to be more splotchy green/black/brown - compared to the slightly yellowish covers (in the ebay link) - these ought to give it a nice steampunk organic/mechanic look
I know I want the ceramic option...
I gather the bridge spacing ought to be 50mm?
Not entirely sure if I should go 4 conductor or 2braided... for an SG... (?)
Long or short leg?
Definitely dig the black bolts over the screws :)
apart from the technical bits, it's obviously a matter of cosmetics - I can't wait to have this set up - and the inspiration I'll no doubt feel picking up my new weapon of choice PDT_045
I also have a black ESP LTD F-200, which I intend to further customize later... but the SG has always been my dream guitar - so finally treating myself after all these years, and not holding back.
I run through a Rat Deucetone, Electro-Harmonix Small-Stone, Boss DD-3, and Tech21 Sans-Amp Tri A.c.
to my SUNN Beta Lead 212 combo.
I am seriously digging Meshuggah's latest album, Koloss - and am into bands such as Brutal Truth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Entombed (Clandestine!), Ministry, Nirvana, and The Melvins.
Anyway, enough rambling. Any advice or comments are much appreciated.
Cheers!

i you would like to sell it again then go for: short legs, 4 conductor, 50 mm spacing.
If you want to keep it forever!! then get: long legs, braided 2. 50 mm spacing

If the SG is exactly like the one you are getting in the link you posted, get the 1/2 long leg. You don't have the mounting rings like on other guitars, so the pickguard has the pickup mounted lower than what would be on a guitar with mounting rings. You'll most likely want the extra length to adjust the pickup with string height.
For Gibsons, and most other guitars with the TOM bridge, the string spacing is at 50mm.
I would go with the 4-conductor, so in the future you felt like experimenting with tapping, or the likes of.

thanks for the input :)
I think I've pretty much narrowed down what I need/want then...
6 String Warpig humbucker - Calibrated Covered Set
Bridge Magnet = Ceramic
Bridge Spacing = 50mm
Leg = Long (1/2")
Conductor = 4
Pole Screws = Black Bolts
Cover = Camo.. not sure if this is different than "Distressed"...
also seeing "Distressed" and "Battleworn" being used to describe the same thing on the BKP forums
I want them to be greenish/brownish/black and with heavy/chunky battle damage
...like in these pictures:

STOKED!

Yep, looks right.
Camo/Distressed.
battle worn are the black one's with the hack marks on it.
Have fun.

You want Camo Battleworn, me thinks, if you want the distressed ( 'Camo' ) finish AND the chunks cut out ( "Battleworn" ).
And defo long legs. Especially for the bridge.
I have a faded brown SG special with a black battleworn warpig in the bridge it looks ok but I wish I'd got Camo! You're right: the camo looks better than black.

I know everyone says long leg with those types of sg's (big scratch plate) but I just fitted a short leg nail bomb to my sg and I can adjust the height as much as I want. So yeah it's up to you. :)

Hi guys. Can someone clarify about leg length for a Gibson SG Special Faded? Do you absolutely need long leg in the bridge or can you use both? And are there any drawbacks to either? As for the neck, is short leg needed?
Also, do both need to be 50mm spacing or can you get away with a different spacing, like 53mm?
Cheers.
