Title: Looooong Time Coming
Post by: Copperhead on April 21, 2012, 04:28:39 PM
After two years of planning and toolpathing, it's finally coming together.
One day I was talking to Tommy on the phone, and he said "I'm tired of looking at Strats today, let's build your project."

So here it begins -
The VooDoo Tel-X-ploder.... :D

I love the look of the swamp ash!

What's the neck?  Cocobolo?

Hi Philly!
It's rosewood. Phenolic board.
Tommy totally faked me out and I didn't know it was coming so soon!
Ordering the grain filler and bridge today.
I think I have everything else to put it together including a NOS Nailbomb I've been hiding for a worthy project!

Rosewood?  That totally fooled me, it's got some pretty dramatic grain.   :)

This looks like its going to be a beast.
How old does something need to be before it can be considered NOS? Like if I 2 years ago I bought a JB but never used it, is that now NOS?
Didn't you make a tele with rewound wide ranges? that was a cool guitar. I hope you made that and im not just confused.

Aaaah you got me! Umm... the Nailbomb is late '08-early '09...
The rewound wide ranges were tricky. The bridge was fine but the neck just was not getting it for me. BTW these were the Fender reissue  :( pickups, just an anemic regular humbucker hiding under that big cover. So rather than break up the set I sold them off at the peak of the Road Worn frenzy.
Good memory!!!

This guitar looks like it has no other purpose than to play some mean licks. Don't stop now! Finish it!

Thanks all! It did arrive unexpectedly. I had talked with Tommy on Thursday and he said he had just cut the body and was going to send pictures, would ship the body first and the neck to follow. On Friday, the whole thing showed up on the afternoon UPS stop!!
So, though I do have most of the bits and pieces, I did not have enough grain filler nor all the right colors to mix, though I do have enough colors in the WB stain. Anyways, Stew-Mac order should be here this week and I will post progress pictures.
I used just a couple drops of boiled linseed oil and rubbed it in very well on the neck, mostly to get the super fine dust off and out of the pores. So the neck is finished.
By the looks of it, this should be a pretty simple finish, just have to take care and get the colors right.
