In my continuing travels through the less glamorous suburbs of PRS country, I've just picked up another little bargain (....I think)
It's a 2006 Standard Satin 22. All mahogany, Wide Fat neck, Dragon II pickups, just a fraction under 7 pounds in weight. The satin finish has gone mostly shiny from playing, there are about a dozen minor battle scars dotted about, but that doesn't bother me like it would on a more upmarket model.
Definitely a Plain Jane.... apart from the Birds (I was a Moons man for a long time, considered Birds excessively blingy, but they have recently won me over!). But feels good, plays great.
And this is the eighth PRS I've owned (ninth including the SE) and still not one with an exotic maple top, or indeed any kind of maple top.... is that some kind of record? :P

looks workmanlike as you say. i wonder how the appearance would be changed without the pickup covers - more rock maybe?
congrats :)
-
Very good choice. I've got a 2007 Singlecut Standard Satin and it's probably the most resonant and versatile sounding guitar I've played. I love how the Satin finish wears too, looks like it's had years of hard playing.
-
Superb choice - love it!
-
Thanks chaps! :D

I think it might be - but I'm thinking of trying my chrome covered Cold Sweat set and switching to black pickup rings.
If that doesn't work, then maybe I'll try something else, probably with black and/or zebra open coils.
Or just leave it as it is!
Steve, you're right about the finish, it's so thin and wears so quickly it'd be impossible to keep it "perfect". It's funny, as the satin polishes up it almost looks like an old nitro finish which started shiny then acquired a dull patina over the years.
-
I like it very much, I personally go for this "work horse" guitar look much more than the "dentist guitars" with the fancy maple tops. I love the satin/mahogany look.

I used to feel this way. Then I met Dave. Then I played his 245 last week. Gorgeous guitar.
I like this one too Philly - great stuff! Is this the only PRS you have? I know you've bought 8, not sure how mnay you've got left.
-
Sweet axe!
I would go double white open coils, Sammy Hagar style!
;)
-
I like that one Philly. Very straightforward and fitting with my workman like philosophy.
-
I like it. Black pickup rings +1
-
It's looking real good. The no-blingy look is just my thing. I think I prefer a guitar like this over, as example, one with an overly wild quilt top. If you change the pickups leave the cream rings and go for zebras :D
-
Wow, that's absolutely gorgeous. I really like that so much more than the blingy ones.
-
Great catch! I like the no frills attitude of this axe. I would take nickel covers on this one, but black open poles is a good option too.
-
VERY nice, it reminds me of Dave's Korina model... I really wanted that one!
-
It's here if you want it, Don!

very nice
keep the rings and take the covers off? if they're black underneath that normally looks awesome with a red guitar (it does on my eggle, anyway).
-
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, guys! :D

I don't think I want to do anything to emulate Sammy Hagar in any way.....!

I've got three now Ian - the McCarty Korina, Mira X and now this Standard Satin 22. All stock at the moment, but I think they're all going to get BKP'd.
(Plus my white SE EG which is a pretty cool HSS guitar but has been awaiting some modifications for a loooong time.... )
The other ones I've sold over the years were a second-series EG, black Mira, korina Mira, Singlecut Standard Satin and Starla X.

I'm sure you'll love it Philly - I had a Cold Sweat set in my satin Standard and thought they really worked well - really nice guitars and not too blingy.

Cool, I like the trem version too! :D
Cold Sweats are good on 24-fretters because the neck and bridge models sound so different. I originally intended the Cold Sweats for the Miras - but ended up selling the guitars before fitting the pickups.

Hmmm, can't say I've ever thought of Sammy as a chick magnet.... maybe running a chain of dodgy beach bars has helped?
Again, not really something I'd aspire to!
-
Nice one. Even I like it! :D
I'd go for the black pickup rings as well (seeing as I'd stick to covers on the pickups).
And I've never thought of Sammy Hagar as a chick magnet either
-
Cheers Andy! :D
I already have chrome-covered Cold Sweats and a set of black pickup rings, so I'll certainly be giving them a go.
If that doesn't work out (sound-wise), I'll try something else - and probably revert to the cream rings with black or zebra open coils.
-
Very nice. Hope you enjoy that one!

I must admit I laughed at it too!

Nice guitar Philly. What's it play like?
-
Plays great, Johnny - as PRS guitars always do, in my experience. Despite all the "lawyer guitar" bollocks, they're extremely player-friendly (not that I'm a good player, but I've played a lot of guitars!). They may be pretty, but they always feel broken-in, never stiff or new.
The Wide Fat neck on this one feels a little slimmer than my McCarty - maybe partly due to the thinner finish, but the McCarty has a hint of a V shape and this doesn't at all.
-
I find the wide fats, and all PRS necks actually, will vary a bit due to the sanding process. It's the same with any guitar pretty much.
My Modern Eagle has a fairly hefty WF, but the PS SC245 has the biggest I've played. Tone baby, tone! 8)
-

Yeah, I think that's true - if I remember right, the Regular neck on my korina Mira felt a little chunkier than the black one. Although again, there's the psychological aspect of a light coloured object appearing bigger than a dark one (black is slimming! )
I wasn't sure how much hand-sanding takes place at PRS, they seem much more consistent than Gibson, for example. Gibson neck profiles - especially Custom Shop, it seems - vary wildly!
-
Despite all the "lawyer guitar" bollocks, they're extremely player-friendly.
Does this presume that lawyers can't be players? (not that I like PRS's myself...) :D
-

Yep, Gibson all over the shop with everything - QC, quality, sanding, everything!
PRS are very consistent with everything. There's a great series of videos on YouTube going through all the stages of the PRS factory. It's worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

In the sense that PRS-haters contemptuously use the phrase "lawyer guitars", I think the implication is that lawyers can't be players.
You can prove them wrong, Elliot!
-
A good friend of mine is a solicitor (that's a lawyer, isn't it? :) ) and he's a very fine guitar player, gigs most weeks. he does actually have a PRS, but he prefers his Musicman Luke
-
I thought it was "stock-brokers" anyway?
(I think I've heard, and even used, "estate agent" as well...)
How about "Dentist"? (Have we got any dentists here?).
"Hi Dave, how you getting on with your dentist guitar? Is it safe? Is it safe?"

(So why can we see these pics at work but not Jonathan's and some others? ... oh well, I'm going home anyway!)
I dunno, I can never figure out why some work but not others. But I think it's the URL, not the type of file.
-
Yeah, I'm fairly certain that's the case - it'll be the company's internet policy and the sites they've identified as potentially "not safe", "inappropriate", or "distracting for our poor employees"
-
Well it seems I should get a PRS then because I can't and never will be able to play...

Hmmm......
.......... well, I can't and never will be able to play.......
....... and I work in "the professions".....
..... and I own several PRS guitars....
.... so it seems I'm unwittingly (and unwillingly) backing up the theory. :(

Look wot you've done Elliot!!
You've triggered Philly's "Eeyore" mode...
It's gonna take weeks of medication and therapy to pull him back out of it now
EDIT: He'll probably have to buy another guitar before he feels better again...

(a) Quit my job.... nice, if I could afford it.
(b) Bang chicks.... chance would be a fine thing. And even given the chance, the spirit may be willing, but the flesh is weak, I'm afraid... :?
(c) Look bitchin'..... Nah. :|

Apologies for the bit of threadnomancy, but it seemed appropriate....
Bought this guitar in April 2012, sold it in November 2012..... and just bought it back again.
This time it's staying. And getting BKPs.
-
Congrats Phil! :)
-
I'm sure I started a "balance sheet" thread years ago. Maybe I should bring it back again..?

Well, you say that....
No, just kidding. At the time I sold it, I had three PRS guitars up for sale, this one, a McCarty Korina and a Singlecut Trem. The intention was to sell the SCT then just one of the other two, but of course the other two sold first and it took a while to shift the SCT. Can't remember why I let them go, I needed the cash for something...
It's come back with a set of 11's (ouch... but interesting) and a low action. Looks like the frets have been dressed too, which is rather nice. :)
-

Oh I'm all about the 11s on a PRS, I think it's the perfect gauge for them. Maybe give them a try for a bit and see what you think? The question now is, which BKPs..?
-
The 11s feel weird, but of course I've had 30 years of playing 10s, so that's to be expected.
I know people say guitars ring more, or "come to life", with heavier strings, but I'm not sure 11s + low action seems any more effective in that sense than 10s + higher action.
And I'm slightly concerned about the intonation - aren't PRS bridges optimised for 9s and 10s? And if I got used to 11s, I'd have to put them on all my Juniors etc - where again, intonation is a compromise. I know I'm over-thinking this....
Pickups are easy - the set of Cold Sweats I've had hanging around forever. Chrome covers, black mounting rings.
-

http://www.prsguitars.com/csc/setup.html (http://www.prsguitars.com/csc/setup.html)
should be fine says PRS, and the DGT uses the same bridge and tuners as the other models
-
That's a nice geetar, PQ. Non-blingy, workman like. My kind of PRS.

The bridge will intonate just as fine as with 10s.
I went from 10-52 to 10-46 quite recently! On all of my electrics, except for the LP. That has 11-49s. I do like tension, but I began to feel that the low strings were a bit on the tubby side. I wanted a bit of twang there too, and it was hard to get with the 52 low E.
Lovely guitar btw! One that's gonna look just better with scars. Kinda like the Keef :)

Well your mileage may vary but I've come to the conclusion that, for me, different guitars suit different gauges: PRS and my Telemaster suit 11s, the Gibson, Hamer, Tele and Wilshire all get 10s. If I end up getting a second hand Ibanez S it'll have 9s. I actually don't find swapping from one guitar with one gauge to another too weird, once you get used to it. And this comes from someone who only used 9s for about 20 years.
I should have rephrased my pickup question, when do you think you're going to fit the new BKPs? ;)
-

Well, where are we now.... 2013?
I'll have to check my five year planner (..... as if I would have such a thing! )
Interesting point about different string gauges for different guitars. I did for a while use 10s on Gibsons and 9s on Fender types, then just went over to 10s on everything. I'll carry on with these 11s for a while, anyway (until one breaks, or I do that pickup change.... )
-
welcome back your old PRS and welcome back this thread :)
always thought this guitar was one of your top buys.
its funny, because i usually play 11s and quite like the novelty of 9s, but i strongly dislike 10s. i guess it all comes down to what we're used to.
-
It is mainly what you are used to, I think. I went from 9.5 to 10's, for me a comfortable gauge, however a strat with 11's sounds usually better then with 10's.
-
I know people say guitars ring more, or "come to life", with heavier strings, but I'm not sure 11s + low action seems any more effective in that sense than 10s + higher action.
Then try 11s with higher action
+1 with AndrewW on the guitars / gauge stuff, I recently switched to 11/52 on my SG and LP and I like it (same - rather high - action as before FWIW) but 10/48 is JustRight on my Tele. I've not tried 11/52 on the Vox, Hofner and Epi Wilshire yet...
-
welcome back your old PRS and welcome back this thread :)
always thought this guitar was one of your top buys.
It was certainly one of my top bargains, second only to my white Singlecut LP Special, I think.
It's not the best PRS I've owned, in terms of natural tone and resonance, but I really like having a PRS with proper old-school birds, and I love the rough-and-ready feel of the finish - it's sunk into the grain of the mahogany all over the neck and body, like an old Gibson.
Re the strings (amazing how much we can debate strings! :P ) I am definitely going to raise the action a bit, the low action seems to kill the vibration of the strings (very unscientific). I'll see how that goes.
-
Re the strings (amazing how much we can debate strings! :P )
Well, yes, but OTHO a guitar without strings doesn't sound that great, does it ? xD
I am definitely going to raise the action a bit, the low action seems to kill the vibration of the strings (very unscientific).
Not that "unscientific" when you think about it. Strings need some clearance so the movement is not dampened by the frets (and also higher action means more tension and more pressure on the bridge hence more interaction with the body's wood).
-
Before you change gauge bring it down to Eflat and if it's still too much bring it down to D 8) should require very minimal set-up on a nice guitar like that. I'm using 11-48 +68 a whole step down and loving it 8) a bit slinkier than 10's in standard. Still regret getting shot of my 513 but it was a mistake getting a guitar that couldn't have BKPs dropped in to it.
-

Strange enough I first tried 11-52 in D, didn't like it so before going back to 10-43 I gave a try with standard tuning... and just found it perfect wrt/ tone and feel (ok, fingers did hurt for the first 3 days but the tone...).
-
Congrats on getting it back! It's a very pretty one for sure 8)

I've just looked back at my first post which started this thread:

Since then, I've had two with maple tops. So there goes that record. :|
