Title: NFRD
Post by: 38thBeatle on April 22, 2012, 10:39:15 PM
New Field recorder today ( though why anyone would want to record a field is beyond me).

Due to the sad demise of my trusty Tascam GTR1. I decided to replace it with a Zoom H4n.

Lots more facilities that I will use from time to time. Results so far have been quite impressive. I'll record the band at a rehearsal before I say too much however I did a quick test recording this afternoon of a new song and I used the multi track mode and I must say I was impressed. Sadly not with my playing but the machine is damn good.

They're good little units the Zooms aren't they?  Decent sound for peanuts!

I have one of those, great little units.  It's come in very handy for recording rehearsals & gigs.  I've also used mine as a stereo mic using the lineout straight in to my recording software.

I've used the H4N with wireless mics for video projects and it's a great little recorder and obviously miles ahead of built-in camera audio. Never used the inbuilt mics though.

I have used the internal mics and they seem to be very good indeed. I got it to enable me to get ideas down and for recording band rehearsals (& maybe gigs) -I have no ambitions beyond that but the extras over the Tascam might lead me to do more.
I do like the idea of using it instead of my DSLR's mic when recording gigs. I have a solo gig coming up that I would like to record (for my own use) and I'll use it for that for sure.

I find the internal mics to be very good, although they can't quite cope with our band practice volume without very careful room placement!

Should get one of those. Handy tools they are.

Sorry to hear your Tascam died Steve. They're so handy those gadgets. Does this new recorder do as good or better job?

Thanks Johnny. It was in a jacket pocket and fell out as I was putting on the jacket and hit the floor rather hard. At the time I bought it(about 3 years ago) it was highly regarded and the recordings were extremely good. I changed allegiance because of all the other things the Zoom could do. So far I'd say the Zoom is the better recorder-the recordings are excellent but I've yet to record the band-that will be the test. Next Saturdays gig. I'm seeing a mate's band on Friday night and I'll record them & see how it turns out.
