Title: New pickups for PRS Standard 24
Post by: -M- on April 23, 2012, 02:00:15 PM
Hey guys (and gals)!

Actually the topic might be a little bit misleading, as I already decided on the pickups  :P
Got a smashing deal on a set of VHII's, so I've got those on the way in the mail.

I do, however, have a question regarding the 5-way rotary switch.
Do I have to reverse the magnet in either of the two pickups in order to make them work right?
I've found that seems to be the case with Duncans and DiMarzios, but is it the same with Bareknuckles?

Anyway, really looking forward to getting these babies in the guitar.
I'm sure it's gonna rock  :D

Yep, same deal.  You'll need a flipped magnet  :)

All right, thanks for the response  :)

Just one more question..
Bareknuckles aren't like, all epoxied up, like certain other manufacturers?

Not encased in a solid block like an EMG, no.

But they are wax-potted.  It'll need re-potting after being dismantled to flip the magnet.

They are wax-potted indeed. I reversed the magnet in my Holydiver bridge I use with the 5-way rotary in my PRS Custom and did not have to re-pot it - no squeals. I would try it without re-potting first - maybe it is not necessary.

Cheers Stephan

Well, just received the pickups yesterday and I wasted no time getting them in the guitar  :D

And what can I say?
They sound freaking awesome! Even better than I imagined they would.
I've just been playing at home, going to try them at rehearsal tonight.

Anywhoo, here are a few pics  :)

Looks very cool!

I (respectfully) disagree with Eric about the covers, the open black coils look good with the metallic colour.  :)

(I will have covers when I put BKPs in my Standard 22, though)

Thanks a lot guys  :)

Got to try the new pickups at rehearsal tonight, and I'm blown away.
Really loving them so far. Sounds equally great both clean and with distortion :)

Might get some clips up at a later time. I'll see what I can do.

I actually considered getting covered ones, but I much prefer the look of uncovered ones  8)

awesome mate, i have the exact same colour PRS STD 24 with bird inlays , i've put in burnt chrome miracle man calibrated set which work a treat, sound really organic for ceramics and kick so much ass compared to the vb/hfs. congrats on the geetar, bought mine in 2004, bloody hell, cost a BOMB! would love to try VHIIs, def put up clips dude!

Man, why didn't I think of that? Burnt chrome covers must look bloody awesome  :D
Maybe next time  :P

I've made a few clips, nothing too fancy, just using some default sounds from Garageband.
Not really a great representation of my sound or anything, but it's what I've got available at the moment.

In the clean clip I'm flipping through the positions on the rotary switch, starting with the bridge.
In the dirty clip I'm just using the bridge and neck pickups. First some random riff, followed by some mindless noodling  :P

Nice tones in the clips. The dirty ones are very in your face rock tones and the cleans in position 2 and 4 are super stratty. Just lovely.
