Title: Jack Bruce, Jack Moore and Leon Hendrix
Post by: blue on May 04, 2012, 05:30:09 PM
just bought myself some tickets!  on Friday 25th May I'll be seeing Jack Bruce, with special guest Jack Moore (Gary's son) at Narrow Water Castle, Co. Down.  then the next night I'll be seeing Leon Hendrix, again with Jack Moore, at the Balmoral Hotel, Warrenpoint.  both shows are part of the Blues on the Bay festival in Warrenpoint.  looking forward to it :)

I had no idea Jack Moore was an adult, let alone a professional guitarist!

Enjoy!

I remember Jack being born... he was on the back cover of Gary's After The War album.

God, I feel old!

off to a good start, the Jack Bruce show has been cancelled!  apparently because of the economic downturn.  i presume that's an attempt at a less embarrassing way of saying "we didn't sell many tickets".

unfortunate.  ah well, roll on Leon Hendrix...

Hmmm, it would have been better the other way round, wouldn't it?

you mean if Jack had played and Hendrix had cancelled?  probably.  but i'm guessing Jack would cost the organisers more in the first place, so they don't need to sell as many tickets for Hendrix

Yeah, that makes sense.

And yes, I meant if Jack had played and Leon had cancelled.... I'd much rather see Jack!

Although I've never even heard Leon Hendrix - must admit I'm assuming that he just peddles a third-rate version of his more-famous brother, but perhaps that's completely wrong?

i've only heard about half of one song!  but it sounded like sort of blues based hard rock, fairly modern sounding guitar.  i'd assume there's some Jimi tribute stuff going on in the show, but i suppose you can hardly blame him for that.  i'll let you know how it goes

Sometimes I think those types of gigs are the best, where you're not a fan before you go so you can just experience it in a relaxed/open frame of mind.  I'll be interested to hear how it goes!

can now say been there, done that :)  the gig was not bad.  Jack Moore was playing with a band called the Blues Katz.  pretty good band, kind of jazzier end of blues.  and then him soloing like a loony!  definitely some of the ol dad in there :)  personally though, i was most pleased by Mirenda Rosenberg getting up and singing a song with them.  be interested to see where young Jack goes though, there's certainly plenty of promise.

Leon Hendrix was decent enough.  he did just do Jimi songs, which was to be expected.  he does play guitar, but he really only strums some chords.  there's another guy up there playing all the Jimi stuff.  he was pretty good, but it certainly lacked the fire and aggression of the real thing!  Leon does a decent enough job of singing, though he has a very quiet singing style, far from belting them out.  it all ends up with a more relaxed, easy going version of the Hendrix songs.

so i'm glad i saw him, and i wouldn't tell anyone to stay away, but i have no need to see him again.  oh, and he seems like a pretty nice, approachable guy.  just glad to be there, doing what he's doing.

Glad you got to see Jack Moore, I assumed he'd been cancelled along with Jack Bruce!

Leon Hendrix sounds kind of like what I expected.  Glad to hear he's doing OK anyway, I know he has a history of substance abuse problems and (IMO) has been pretty badly treated by the Hendrix family after being left out of his father's will.

yes, from what (admittedly little) i've seen, this Janey Hendrix seems to be a bit of a Sharon Osbourne figure.  i'm almost surprised she hasn't tried to stop Leon performing Jimi's songs

I read a lot (in guitar mags) about Janie and Experience Hendrix at the time they gained control of Jimi's estate and music catalogue, although there doesn't seem to be very much about it on the internet.

They were very much portrayed as these "good guys", taking the music back from Alan Douglas, the producer who'd released various albums like Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning put together from half-completed tracks.  But ultimately they seem to have done much the same sort of thing (and I was pissed off that, after slagging off Douglas's repackaged Hendrix albums, they prudishly changed the cover of Electric Ladyland, even though reputedly Jimi didn't like the famous cover, it was the "proper" cover IMO).

I was always pretty dubious about Janie's role as boss of Experience Hendrix anyway - not doubting her status as the legal heir, but she's only Jimi's stepsister and was a small child when he died.  How does that qualify her to control the musical legacy any better than Alan Douglas did?

when there's something to fight over, it's amazing who can crawl out of the woodwork, and it's amazing what people will do.

hopefully it won't go as far as another Gibson strat debacle!
