Title: I dont know what pickup to get
Post by: Mark89 on February 10, 2006, 02:51:39 PM
Hey guys, ive recently sold a KVx10 because my ibanez SZ520 needs a new pickup. Im going for a lamb of god like tone and so i was originally going to go with a Seymour duncan sh-5 custom as this is what Lamb use but then my friend reminded me of bare knuckle pickups because i had forgot about them but had wanted one for awhile. Anyway im now not sure which pickup would best suit my needs. I was looking at the Nailbomb, warpig and miracle man and i was wondering which one you lot think would be best suited for the sound im going for. If you need anymore info like the wood of my guitar etc just ask.
Cheers for any help in advance.
Mark

I have a Nailbomb and I play a lot of CoB, Metallica, Deep Purple, Hendrix... I think in addition to being a great pickup for metal and rock, it's about as versatile as pickups can get.

Well Lepersmeesa posted a Lamb of God clip on the Players forum, check that out if you havent allready. It seems like the Nailbomb is the more versatile of the "metal" pickups BK offer although some jazz players use Warpigs

Yeah i heard them. The laid to rest cover was brilliant i just want to make sure that say the warpig or miralce man wouldnt be even better for that type of tone but that clip is what made me consider the nail bomb.
Cheers so far guys

I would go for the Nailbomb, its more versitle than the Warpig/Miracle Man and does the Lamb of god tone very well.

I want as much gain as possible though. How much of a difference is there between the Nailbomb and warpig and miracle man and if i did go with the highest gain which i think is either the warpig or MM right? Would it still be able to manage that type of tone.

The warpig has the most saturated gain, but both the MM and the Warpig have a simular output. I think that the Warpig would be closer to the tone you want.

Do you play a wide varity of music? are clean tones important?

Well my main thing is metal so balls to the wall distortion like 90% of the time but i do use clean every now and then and when i do i like it to sound good. Its one of the things what i always hated about my emgs the clean tone was never quite there. It was good but not as good as it should be if you get what i mean. Also every now and then i jam out some blues. Now ive got a feeling your going to suggest the nail bomb because it is more versatile but it will still pack a punch distorted.

Spot on, I would suggest using a Nailbomb. It won't have as much saturated gain as the EMG but you will have a much less compressed tone with very good cleans.

Ill probablly go with that then. Thanks for the help. Im not that fussed itll have less gain than my emgs because i was originally going to get an sh-5 which i know has less gain but i think the nailbomb will have more than enough for my needs specially after listening to the laid to rest cover again, its sounds so much like the original. Now all i need to do is wait for the person to give the shop the rest of the money for my guitar and i can buy one of these bad boys. Maybe even get a BKP for the neck aswell  :D

Im actually really considering the warpig because of the extra output etc now. Im guessing it could still do that type of tone but more brutal and not clean up aswell would i be right in saying this???

Absoutly, I had a set in my Ibanez and they were as heavy as a really heavy thing!

Actually, most reportage on the Warpig seems to indicate that it cleans up surprising well.  I think there are some clean Warpig clips from Ratrod lurking in the Players section .....

Im almost certain im getting a war pig now. Do they have more output than an emg81 ive heard both yes and no.

No they dont have as much gain as an 81, but its pretty close. MORE than enough gain for lamb of god (who dont really play with all that much gain anyway: its a fair bit, but its not silly levels)

The pig is much heavier and thicker than the 81. And it still has similar clarity and tightness.

Warpig and 81 cleans are not even comparable. The pig is a whole different ball park: its cleans arent "Good for a metal pickup", as you often hear about high gain pups, they're GOOD. End of. They might be "OK for a bare knuckle", but they're much batter than many lower output pickups that have a good reputation for clean (*chough* JB).

I think the pig would be perfect for you. Hell, you'd probably really like a miracle man, and thats supposed to have the worst BK clean (its still quite passable)

I sold a Gibson Les Paul with an EMG-81 anniversary set because the cheapo BC Rich 'Fire Breather' Mockingbird with the Pig in it sounded better.
