Title: Pickup set for Epiphone 84 Explorer
Post by: _luckyjuju_ on June 02, 2012, 06:06:49 PM
Hey Guys.
I wanted to know which pickup set you recommend for an explorer with mahogany neck and body and a rosewood fretboard. I mostly play old school thrash metal à la Master Of Puppets, so i what i want is a pickup with moderate mids, and more bass and treble. It also should be versatile, so it can produce tones with almost no mids, like on the ...And Justice For All album, but mainly Thrash. The tone must be really raw and brutal, with a more open sound, not that tight in the bass and low frequences. The neck pickup should provide a creamy, smooth lead tone, which sound really fast. The clean tone should be 100% clean, so please don't recommend the Warpig for the neck  . It should be organic, but you must hear every note of an arpeggio, without muddling up or a thunder type echo caused from too much output, like the EMG 85. The pickups should also stay clear when the guitar gets downtuned, the sound mustn't muddle up like with some pickups of other brands. Until now i concider the Painkiller or Nailbomb set, but the Cold Sweat looks interesting too. Would be great to hear your opinions.
Greetz, JuJu.

The cold sweat will work extremely well. The neck pickup is excactly as you described and the bridge pickup should definitely be more than sufficient.

Thanks for the quick answer.
Sorry for editing the post, but I simply forgot some things. Never thought about the Miracle Man, some members of another board in germany told me, it would sound a bit too screamy, but i think I will email Tim to sales@bareknucklepickups.co.uk to receive another answer. Also the Miracle Man has less mids as the Painkiller. Nailbomb or Cold Sweat according to here (http://"https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/pickups.php?cat=humbuckers&sub=contemporary&pickup=miracle_man"). Another question is, if i can send the pickups back for swapping them with another set if they don't suit my style? And am i allowed to fit the pickups with a cover without losing the warranty?

This is not clearly stated in the warranty (https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/tandc.php (https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/tandc.php)). I don't think so, but better to ask the BKP team.

wrt/ pickup choice: remember that scooping the mids is easily done with your amp's EQ.

Based on my own experience, I'd go Alnico Nailbomb. 'Raw' and 'Brutal' are certainly words I'd use to describe it, the alnico magnet will keep things fairly versatile and make it less ultimately tight than the ceramic. When I tried one in my Jackson I sent it back for a Holydiver but I've always maintained that in a guitar with a lot of mahogany it would be absolutely awesome. It's certainly the pickup I thought of when I read your post.
