I've been asked to do this ultimate obstacle course with a group of mainly military friends but there will be a couple of us who have never served.

I'm getting on in years now (38) and I've never thought a marathon was worthwhile or interesting so this would be a great way to focus on an ultimate physical/mental challenge before 40...
My personal cardio start point is low, personal strength high but as we have a years training to get ready I think I'm gonna do it.

Have any of you done marathons / iron man type stuff?
Any tips?
It was either this or take up an offer of a full scholarship to an Al Qaeda training camp but this one has FREE BEER at the end, so is more in line with my religious values.. :P

Any tips?
Sneak on a bus while no one's watching, get off at the free beer stop and try to look exhausted

Looking at that last photo; Asbestos underpants?

Just quickly glancing through, I read that as "a group of MANLY military friends" and thought "Hmmm, trying a bit too hard to prove something here...?" :P
Anyway, sounds a $%&#ing nightmare.
But can we sponsor you or something?
-
I really wouldn't want to be sponsored for any event because I'd want to just do it or fail to do it - no collateral winners or losers - just the personal challenge.
I think it far enough over my abilities that failure is expected but success would be the sweetest prize. :?
-
I'd do a sponsored "how many times will Afghan vomit" during the run pool... :D
-
I'm speechless
Good luck with it. :D

looks like an amazing personal challenge. good on you Dave. i think the sense of achievement at the end will be epic!
-
triathlon in august if my prolapse allows it

I have done 1/10 of an ironman when I was 13. Not really anything to brag about though
-
Ben/TO is over 40 and has just done an Iron Man/Spartan event in New York. From his photos it looks mental, and very similar to what you've posted.
Not for me at all but good luck if you do decide to do it!

Looks like the thing ex special forces do for fun. Those men are as hard as nails Dave. Good luck though
Mate. I'll stick to swimming :-)

this looks made of win!! I've reecently started running as part of my MA training and the first thing I discovered during a martial arts class (we do Tabata CV training a lot) is my upper body strength needs work... prior to running I'd have run out of breath first :)
I'd love to be able to do this kind of thing, I'm 40 this year - but two guys in our MA class are ex-para and ex-marine and at 50 they're still incredibly fit, so I wouldn't write yourself off - I'm not ruling this kind of stuff out :)

Try this...http://www.toughguy.co.uk/
The safest most dangerous event in the world!!!
Me n my mate was going to apply last year. But may apply for next years.
-
I've really got back into my martial arts... having lessons with a teacher I've known of for years - He really understands me and I now admire him as a friend as well as an expert.
It makes such a difference to me to feel a personal connection rather than just some abstract desire to learn in a faceless class.
I hate running!!! I'm just not built for it - bad knees and I'm bulky and heavy - I won't do it.
Intense skipping + kettlebell training will have to push my fitness up with occasional runs just to test my level.

Running's weird, it seems to either come naturally.... or not.
I know people who are basically pretty unfit but can just turn up and run a 10k without any preparation (although they probably feel the ill-effects afterwards). Whereas I had to build up really slowly over several months, and even then I couldn't do the full distance without slowing to a walk occasionally. Plus I'm prone to a bad back and shin splints.

A mate did this today. On asking how he got on, his entire answer was "I've had tougher steak pies"
