Title: Mothers Milk Neck Pickup Height?
Post by: Lord0 on June 09, 2012, 07:38:41 PM
Hi,

I got a set of Mothers Milk recently (bass plate on bridge pickup). The bridge and middle sound ace (the bridge being FAR better than stock) but I can't seem to get the Hendrixy/SRV ballady type sound I want from the neck. In fact I would say the stock neck pickup nailed the woody/smooth sound I am looking for better than the MM - this can't be right?!?

I have read that these pickups are pretty sensitive to height so can you recommend a good starting position/height for the Neck pickup? (or anything else I should try)

Guitar: 90's US Standard Strat, Maple Neck, Graphtec Saddles, Raw Vintage Trem springs.
Amps: Fender Blues Junior or Twin Reverb
Strings: Ernie Ball 9's

Thoughts?

Cheers

I dont have them so I can't give a specific reccomendation but try lowering it slowly until you find the right spot. The lower the pickup the more woody and "natural" it sounds but it picks up less harmonics and overtones and output although you're using a low ouput neck single coil so pinch harmonics and feedback probably isn't what you are among for anyway so it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi and welcome

Try to start with 3 mm with the string pressed and then adjust to taste.

I have both MM's and IT's in HSS-strats and for me the IT-neck works better for Hendrix/SRV-stuff. I have a Blues Junior too and the MM-neck provides (for me) a tad too little bass to get those sounds. What I do at small gigs: I hook up a 2x12 cab to the Blues Junior, which gives some extra low mids and bass, though the BJ-circuit still lacks some push in the bass. I prefer my IT-loaded custom strat on the BJ.

The MM works way better on my Orange Rockerverb/2x12 cab. The clean channel has a Fender meets Vox-chime, round topend with a good mids and bass. Suits the MM. The MM is in an ash/rosewood fretboard American Series-strat.
