Title: Pickup for a mordern Strat. Nailbomb maybe?
Post by: Void_555 on June 14, 2012, 01:00:01 PM
Hey Folkx!

I have an old Strat with alder body and birdseye maple neck/fretboard.
It is an HSS Strat with two Häussel Big Mags in it.

Now I´m looking for a new bridge humbucker.

Here is the thing: I´m want to play this thig tuned a half step down (Hendrix-Style).
The bridge pickup should be an A5 humbucker. I´m looking for a fat, warm and powerful sound. No need for being super tight. Just a warm, fat and beefy humbucker with not too much output.

I had an Aftermath running in this guitar but I didn´t like the upper mid spike.....

Here is what I am considering right now:

Nailbomb A5
Crawler
Black Dog
VHII
Emerald

I am really interested in the nailbomb. Will this thing work for noisy rock, modern blues and probably some hard rock stuff?

The Crawler is darker and would probably work more in this strat than any other type of guitar. My guess is most people to chime in here will talk up the Crawler. I have a Black Dog in an LP and sounds great with rich mids and more than enough high end to balance it nicely.

Yeah I think Crawler would work best for you.

A5 humbucker - V
fat - V
warm - uh... not much
powerful sound - V
not super tight - V
beefy - V
not too much output - X

guess the crawler should fill the remaining requirements

I have the Crawler in a swampashstrat/eboney fretboard. It's full, beefy, warm, with a round, but not dull topend. Don´t worry there are enough highs in a strat. Has some PAF-pedigree and therefore a more vintage character, but with a but more oommph. It really growls when pushed. Singlenotes above the 12th fret stay full.  It's a versatile hb for all kind of styles, except metal. This one cleans up great and splits good too.

So I narrowed it down to the nailbomb and the crawler.
Since the Big Mags have planty of output I fear that none of the vintage hot pickups will work.

Anyone who compared the crawler and the nailbomb?

the NB ticks most of your boxes but It's way more agressive than it is warm

Nailbomb is more modern, more agressive, has strong uppermids and the topend sizzle you have to like.

Holydiver would work superbly in that guitar. The Crawler would also be good if you like things a little more vintage whereas the Holydiver is a bit more modern but still extremely versatile..

I was also a bit surprised that the Holydiver was not on your list. It should fit your criteria better than the A-Bomb which is more on the heavier side of things.

I am yet to compare the Crawler and the Nailbomb in the same guitar but please don't count on me as to when I get around to do that. I would expect though that the Crawler has less output, more mids and is not as tight in the bass.

Cheers Stephan
