Myself and the good Ian Price of this parish were in Guildford last night at a small pub called the Boileroom, seeing Rob Chappers band Dorje and Phil X's band The Drills. It was the best £6 I've ever spent :D
Headlines:
* Phil X and the Drills are one of the most entertaining bands I've ever seen 8)
* Hendrix's "Fire" solo can be extended to include the theme from The Flintstones and the Beat It solo(!)
* The pub's cheese and onion crisps were better than Dorje
* Best quote from Phil X: "If you're not playing from the c*ck, it's not rock and roll!" :P
Top comedy moments:
* Best audience heckle ever (to Phil X): "Can we swap you with Russell Brand? He's a c*nt!"
* Ian Price on Dorje: "They say they sound like Audioslave? More like Audiolame..."
Final thoughts:
Rob Chapman is the biggest tosspot in the world, and thinks he's something special. He's not, and not by a long chalk.
-
This kind of ties in with what I might have expected from the gig. Its good you had a great time and got your money's worth!
-
god bless youtube and all who sail in her.
-
So you and Ian can clear up the issue that's been bothering us for months - are Phil X and Philly Q really not the same person?
-
Having met both of them, I can categorically confirm that PhillyQ is in fact NOT Phil X.
Unless it was a very good disguise......
-
What a great night (apart from the 3 support acts). My ears are still ringing.
The Drills were top top notch entertainment and highly recommended when they hit these shores again. I don't want to rant about Dorje too much but to play really bad original songs that have needless solos, bass 'solos', an improvised 'funk' jam and a drum solo is an indication that they really aren't that good. Actually they are sh!te.
I can absolutely confirm Chappers is a total c0ck (and a hopeless singer). Anyone who takes two guitar techs on what is essentially a pub tour has a massively over inflated opinion of themselves. Also pushing people out of the way to get to Phil X and proclaim that you "love him" was a little rude. Do it the Phil X way. Take 3 guitars, do all the work yourself, be happy to have photos taken, sign stuff and be nice with people.
Rant over.
The Drills were great. I even bought the CDs on sale. I feel like a teenager again.

^ what Ian said :D
Rob Chapman blows goats.
-
Unless it was a very good disguise......
Exactly
Anyway, how does one pronounce "Dorje"? I'm imagining "dordge" - how could you possibly have expected anything good from an outfit calling themselves "dordge"?
Good to hear about The Drills though. I know he gets up some folks' noses, but I've always expected that he and his band would be a fab night out.
-
They're superb Andy, really really good. Fun original songs with punky attitude and comedy lyrics, lots of classic song riffs/solos thrown into random places and good onstage banter. If they were a local band I'd watch them every week!
Great tone as well - a single pickup Yamaha SG P90 through a Bad Monkey and an Evil Robot head. Awesome.
-
Sounds like a great night out, wish I'd have gone.
PhilX is insanely talented and insanely enthusiastic about playing, I wish I played with people with a 1/4 of his love for playing!! Chappers has always come across as a tool though, was he wearing his headband?
Oh and AndyR, would it not be pronounced 'Dor-HEY'?
Paddy

Oh and AndyR, would it not be pronounced 'Dor-HEY'?
Wouldn't they be good if they had "HEY!" in their name, though? :D
Sounds like it's me and my pronunciation misconceptions... (remember that I was playing a Badga Telecaster for quite some time until someone pointed out that it was actually "Baha" after Baja, California  - I did think it was a pretty cr@p name to give a guitar at the time :D)
-
^ what Ian said :D
Rob Chapman blows goats.
and that's the quote of the day! :)
i imagined Chapman's band would be a bit cr@p, and he clearly does have a very high (and unjustified) opinion of himself. just because he does some silly youtube videos!
Phil X on the other hand, just seems like a massively enthusiastic lunatic! and a very good guitar player and singer. i didn't notice Bon Jovi calling Chapman when Richie did a runner. i got a couple of Drills cd's to see what they were like, and they were thoroughly enjoyable. i would love to have seen the band live!
oh, Philly may be rubbed the wrong way by Mr X's personality, but i bet he'd enjoy the cd's
-
I'd love one of those Tele's. I used to pronounce is 'Barger'.
Paddy

No headband from the Chappers, but his swamp dwelling bass player was wearing one

Surely you mean 'the best bass player in Europe'.
Oh and AndyR, would it not be pronounced 'Dor-HEY'?

You've just reminded me of another cringe worthy moment. There was a moment in their 'set' when they asked the audience to shout Dorje in a Scotish and then Italian accent. Cringe city.
They also asked everyone to make a pirate like noise before the bass player played his 'solo'. Cringe fest city.
-
Is it pronounced 'Dirge'?

Unless it was a very good disguise......
Ah, but he's quite a lot bigger than me, isn't he....?
..............it's actually a complete Phil X body suit! You'd never know, would you? Although the chubby arms look a bit weird on close inspection.
And..... I've just been pretending to be a sh!t guitar player all these years! :P
But seriously, it would kill me to even try to be that enthusiastic for more than about 30 seconds. :|
-
The gig sounds like an experience, even the bad parts.
Even though I still find Mr X...... wearing....., I will grudgingly admit that I don't loathe him anywhere near as much as I used to. And I'm prepared to believe he and his band were good.
Chappers, on the other hand, seems to be a complete and utter c0ck. I find it hard to believe the two of them are really the big buddies they're currently being portrayed as.
-
It's pronounced "Dorge" - "Ay" according to his YouTube videos...
shite name for a band... It's very much like they're trying to come up with a cool "clever" name but only manage to come up with this name that a 6 year old boy would come up with. It just sounds stupid.
I'll be honest, I do enjoy his gear reviews and stuff at andertons but his band... Boring as $%.
They spend so long trying to show of their knowledge of music theory and technique and overall musical prowess that they forgot that theyre making music...
The lyrics are poor and they are so slow that they aren't the slightest bit catchy, there seems to be a solo every 30 seconds and they're just trying fit to much in to one song... Every song... Apart from the most important thing. It's need to be listenable.
The drills though... Epic. Obviously less musical knowledge and technical ability than Chappers group of individuals yet at the same time they seem to know much more about actually writing music rather than bdlessly soloing.
They have gotten the mix between quick catchy riffs and awesome singing with an attidtude just right. That is the definition of rock n roll. Not chapper's proggressive experimental bore-to-the-death-to-much-gain djent-rock.

Only one of them believes this. No prizes for guessing which one.
As far as name pronounciation goes there was a very cringey moment where they asked the audience to shout the band name in a Scottish accent and then an Italian accemt. I'm still not clear way.
This was however suprassed by the audience being asked to shout a pirate like noise to get the bass player to play his 'solo'. Apparently he only does that if a loud enough nose is made. Sadly a loud enough noise was made.
-
Sadly a loud enough noise was made.
Probably your "why don't you f*ck off?!" added to the volume, and it's difficult making out the meaning of all the noises coming from the audience sometimes
-
While we were getting CDs signed it became very clear that Phil X and Chappers are NOT buddies. Phil X did well not to lamp him one!

Tell us more!

OK...
* Phil X is talking to fans, having and taking pics, signing CDs etc
* Chapman appears from backstage with some geeky hangers on
* Chapman barges infront of Phil X fans, grabs Phil round the neck, and shouts "I love you man" into his ear
* Chapman attempts to cintinue conversation and thrusts whisky bottle into Phil X's face
* Phil X calmly steps backwards 3 steps to continue talking to fans
* Chapman drags his cronies past Phil again and out towards the bar
So, who's the class act then?
-
Really nice to hear this.
Confirms 99% of what I would have guessed about these two.
Natural honest showmanship from Phil X (years of hard dues paying hidden out of sight)
vs
Affected and conceited Chappers (years of being a bullied loser covered up by practice and theory written on his face)
-
Sounds like this will be the one and only Drills/Dorje tour!
-
Me and Ian think so - we reckon it'll be Drills only if he comes back ;)
-
Wow I think im the only person in the world who likes chappers :D
I haven't heard his music buy I find him an interesting character for sure.
but I also dislike people that everyone else loves :P

So you know what it's been like for me on all these "Phil X Love" threads! :P

Totally! I feel for you.
-
Seriously Toe-Knee - if you'd been there last night you wouldn't be signing in to the Chappers fan club...
-

I've always referred to the Baja as The Badger. I know how it's pronounced properly, but prefer badgers...
Oh I'd go see The Drills also. Can't say I've ever found Chappers anything but an embarrassment when I've seen his vids. Then again Phil X can be a little challenging in vids also, but I can see how his somewhat excessive enthusiasm would translate to a great front man.
-
I've always enjoyed the vids of Phil X and his enthusiasm. OK I can understand where Philly is coming from but I watched a few performance vids of Mr X and his beat combo and I thought that they would be a very good night out. Glad to hear that that is true.
As for the other bloke, well it is a shame that he and his band haven't come across very well. I am sure his Mum loves him.
-

I used to like him. I'll admit that I even bought a couple of video lessons from him in my initial 'he seems like a decent chap' phase.
It all started going wrong for me when he did the first lesson in Eb and didn't apologise or even ask if I wanted it re-done in standard when I picked him up on it. He just went ahead and did the second lesson in Eb as he remembered that I was "an E flat guy".
Seriously, if you ever meet him (and I have done a few times) you'll not like him so much. He is very "ME, ME and more ME".
-
Funniest thread I've seen in a while! I too can see why Phil X would be cool and Chappers would be a complete knob! Perhaps Dorje should be Drudge?
-
I actually really like Chappers. I find his playing is full of really interesting and original nuance. I think both in terms of playing and stylistically he's probably one of the most grossly overlooked players of his generation.
-
did chappers hack your computer? :P
-
why man? I find his lessons both informative and his persona like grinding up small candies and pouring the sweet dust into my ears.
-
doesn't that make your ears all sticky?
he is quite cheerful. just a bit silly. i haven't seen his lessons, just his demo's. they're ok, but he does make most things sound pretty much the same. maybe that's all the ground up sweeties in my ears :)
-
i not being serious really. the dude is a butt munch.
-
i know :)
i do like his hairband though. i might get one
-
If you ever feel the need to buy a headband like that, please do yourself a favour and take the money you intend to spend on it and go buy 'a clue'. It'll help you out more in the long run.
-
he is quite cheerful. just a bit silly.
He is only cheerful if he is promoting himself and only silly if he feels it will get people to like him.
Phil X is a bit silly (and incredibly cheerful) but in a totally different way!
Interestingly on the Phil X website the UK tour dates are on there. No mention of Dorje/Chappers though. Maybe I'm reading too much into the one-way relationship thing.

or a noose?
-
another chappers(ex!) fan here, shame to here he's a prat in person. great player though.
-
just been watching some tour footage from chappers and can confirm it has really put me off him. I know many unsigned musicians who have more talent and also think that the other guitarist in his band is far better than him, he acts like it's his tour when he's only a support act. I was going to go to this gig but quite happy I didn't now from what I have heard, was it worth £6?

The Drills were worth at least 3 times the £6 entry fee IMO. Dave and I didn't really listen much to the 3 support acts - in all honesty they added to the entertainment of the night but not for the reasons they would have wanted to. :D
-
I'm still on a bit of a 'Chappers' rant . Reading this gave me some amusement:
"Hi guys,
Many of my hardcore followers will already know this , but just to make it official here... the Rob Chapman band is now called Dorje.
Pronounced - Door Jay
I much prefer the feeling of fraternity within a band to being solo artist, the line up is the same... the only difference will be that we are starting from scratch with material which will be a mash up of Prog rock infused Drop B Pain, mixed with my blues rock and traditional song structures.
Think of it as a kind of Audioslave if you will - growly vocalist joins slightly funky rock dudes. We are very much a band, this is not a solo project.
The material I wrote as a solo artist will still be recorded by the same line up and released as Rob Chapman.
The brand new Dorje page is here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dorje/321982841193879
Soon to get a vanity name once we decide on it. And lastly if you are wandering what a Dorje is, it's a spiritual tool used in Tibet by the Lama during rituals.
Wish us luck
Chappers & Dorje"
Hmmm - even though it is "not a solo project" it is interesting it is signed from "Chappers AND Dorje" and that the music will be "a mash up of Prog rock infused Drop B Pain, mixed with my blues rock and traditional song structures."
And I would call Chris Cornell anything but growly!!!!
-
I would have went had they been playing near me but I would really only have wanted to see PhilX like him or loathe him people hes a great player and in my humble opinion Chappers doesnt even come close
-
god bless youtube and all who sail in her.
This, by far, is the best quote I've seen in such a long time! :D
-
Is The Drills' "We Bring The Rock n Roll" album worth getting? The only song I can hear in full is Talk You Off the Ledge which is awesome.
-
They're only short albums, more like EPs, but they're worth getting if they're cheap enough. The tracks are quite catchy, if not very deep and meaningful
