Title: PU: Gibson Les Paul Custom 57
Post by: Electroretard on June 21, 2012, 12:12:47 PM
I recently bought a Les Paul Custom 1957 historic reissue, which is an all-mahogany design(no maple cap) that came with Gibsons 57 classic pickups. They sound decent enough for classic rock, but they lack the power and scream I need. So Im looking to replace em with some sweet Bareknuckles, and Im wondering what you guys would recommend.

I play really REALLY heavy rock with a bit of thrashmetal and stoner mixed in, kind of like late Entombed, High on Fire, Melvins or The Sword. So I need a bridge pickup that really deliver heavy, defined, chunky palmmutes for chugging thrashriffs and a neck pickup that is just pure sludgy filth for a muddy stoner tone.

Note that since the guitar is all-mahogany is does have a ton of natural midrange, so it doesnt need any kind of boost in that area. What it does need is treble and a tighter lowrange. And we dont have a bass-guy so Im not worried about claiming all the lowrange tone ;)

You'll really enjoy the Painkiller or C-Bomb bridge.
As for that sludgy neck tone... Take a look at the C-pig.

Just looking at the EQ for the pickups, the ceramic nailbomb looks dead on for the bridge. But Im skeptical about putting a warpig in the neck position, wont that be too much low-end even for me?

Maybe you could pair the c-bomb bridge with a humbuckersized stockholm p-90.

A modern P90 in the neck sounds like cool idea. I have another guitar with a H/S config EMG81 and SA, and that SA in the neck position is really filthy!

c-bomb/stockholm set sounds like really good combo for your purposes
