hey all
for the 1st time in ages I seem to be guitar shopping . I have 2 6 strings. I have been messing with one allot in drop C and writing some stuff but they are both set up to go between drop d and standard . I cant set one up low full time cause I need a back up in drop d/std for gigs
so leads me to thinking about going the 7 string route .played one a few times but never owned one
the ibanez line seems to have the most choice and quality range, plus I like some of the syles
I have cash to play with so I don't want entry level cheap end ,my gear is all good quality , but never having owned an ibanez not sure about their quality through the range . should I stick to the upper models or is the mid to high stuff of a high standard overall ?

Mid to higher range should be fine if you like super thin necks. And replace those awful pickups! IMO Ibanez puts the worst stock pickups in their guitars to keep prices low. I actually like that method, but that's not what you asked is it.
There's my answer haha.
-
ahh thin necks might be a sticking point . I'm tall and have big hands so i don't like super thin in general
gonna go play a few this weekend , just trying to gauge where to start

I have big hands and I like Ibanez necks. I have 2 RG7s.
If I was to buy a mid-priced Ibanez 7 now, I would go for the apex2. Nice looks (subjective), easy to setup, nice stock pickups, straight-forward controls.

if you have huge hands, like me. then look at schecter. their necks are chunkier :)

The best thing I can suggest is to go out and actually try stuff,
I wasn't keen on the idea of the Ibanez necks until I actually tried them and they work so well because they are pretty wide on the fretboard with a thin back so it kinda balances out rather than just being tiny skinny things that make your hand cramp up

+1 very true. You won't truly know until you play a few.

I had a quick play and checked out a few on the weekend
seems RG1527Z or RG2127Z both prestige models are the 2 that jump out
gotta decide if I want the extra step down tuning longer scale or not. hard choice
-
There is always the used market too...
RG7620/1 and RG7420/1, depending if you want trem or not, are MIJ and found cheap these days. I bought 2 on the same week!

The RGD would work fine in standard. It's scale is shorter than a normal baritone, which would normally tune to B anyway, so the only issue should be resetting the bridge. It'll feel a little tighter than the RG1527 with the same strings though.

I used my RGD in standard for quite some time it works really well and is really tight!
Usually I have it in Eb/D though

thaks guys good to know
as a 7 string newb when you say standard are you talking low string to B
Eb/D is that using the 6th string as refrence like a std 6 string ?

Well my RGD is the 6 string version so im actually speaking on the tunings I mentioned.
I cant imagine putting the 7 up to what would be Ab or A standard would be an issue at all. If it is you can just drop a guage of strings and you will still have the tension of a guage thicker anyway.

Yeah, "standard" on a 7 string is BEADGBE. Factory tuning on the RGD is ADGCFAD.
