Title: Would a VHII set go with an Ibanez Sabre?
Post by: Vintage Metal on June 24, 2012, 07:28:30 PM
I'm just curious as I may upgrade my stock pickups from my Ibanez S guitar.

It's a mahogany body, but due to how small it is, I thought it may suit the VHII's quite good. Anyone got some good advice?

I think they would work well

I have one and currently have Blackhawks in it , but I can imagine that VH2s would rock

What type of pickups are in the Ibanez right now?

Just the stock pickups. The Dimarzio IBZ models. I was just curious as I wasn't sure if they were best suited to Alder and brighter guitars.

Do you think the thin, mahogany body would help give it more fullness, Feline?

What type of sound or what bands do you want to sound like?

I just want something for my solo recordings. Even though I'm a shredder by day, and a metal musician by night, I want a guitar that's good and versatile for playing more constructed instrumentals. I know by the description of the VHII, that that's exactly what I want as it probably describes everything I'm looking for in a pickup. I'm not exactly after the brown sound, but I'm sure the VHII will only sound like that if you use the equipment too replicate Van Halen. I was just curious as to how it would sound in a very small mahogany body as to an alder style strat.

The S type doesn't really have enough wood  for the mahogany to give a lot of beef.
They can be quite bright in fact

I would first and foremost change the vol and tone to 550k and add an oil and paper cap and see what the tone is like then review what pickups to put in.
The cap smooth out some of the high end IMO even when tone is up

Whilst VH2 can be a bit bright due to the serious offset between the two coils, it also has a fat midrange so may be excellant
It is one of those odd pickups that has a lot of everything, due to the mix of overwinding and coil offsets.

As alternatives I would also look at Black Dog and Abraxas sets as they both add some nice midrange

I've had a go on Jonathan's Sabre and its a really cool guitar. There been a few pickups in it, and its sounded good with each one.

Since Jonathan has experience of the whole BKP range, I wouldn't hesitate to go with his advice.

The Black Dog has never personally appealed to me, but the Abraxas has always caught my eye. I just like my guitars to have a nice cut in the highs. I prefer it when rolling back the volume. That's what led me to the VHII calibrated set. I was recommended it a few months back for a Strat, so I'm guessing the Sabre is not as bright as a Strat? I just kind of wanted some reassurance. I guess if I get the VHII and I'm not happy, I can explain what I didn't like and get something else.

I think the VHII would be great in that guitar.
