Title: Stormy Mondays + 91LP ... photos and homebrew clip
Post by: 5F6-A on February 14, 2006, 09:44:18 AM
I have installed my new set of SM and I'm in awe. For the irst time I can have a hefty toneful tone when I'm playing the lower strings and then you hit the top strings and the sound jump at you, ringing nicely.

Fantastic sound... I'll try to post some pics soon and some clips.

I'm a happy camper.

BTW, I took the time to install some new 500K CTS pots instead of the old 250k/500k mismatch job that the Gibby came with originally. Also the guitra now sports Hovland Guitarcaps and 50s wiring. Now I can use those knobs.: .hurrrayyy!!!!!!!

I'll be looking forward to both the clips and the pics. It should be quite the 50's guitar.

well I guess so...the guitar is black std from 1991 but it's been retroffited with a Bigbsby B7 trem ( nice operation and nice looking ), a delrin nut and a Schaller roller bridge ( nice operation, nice sound -considering how many adjustable pieces are in it- but not so good looking ).

About the clips; If I get my home studio sorted out soon I'll be posting a microcube/logic job. Maybe not too flashy but convinient.
If I don't I'll take the guitar to some sessions to a good friend's pro studio and I'll be posting some decent clips.

Whatever happens please be patient and your patience will be rewarded.
;)

Oh, man, I tore my Logic manual in half, I was so frustrated with it. Then I downloaded some tutorials from here (http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorials/) and that helped an enormous amount.

But you might know more about recording or reading manuals than me.  ;)

Jazz maestro's Larry Coryell. I was a pupil of his although I prefer old time jazz rather than fusion. Put it this way, I rather listen to T-Bone Walker than Pat Metheny.

Extremelly nice guy and fantastic player!!

Have to agree with you on the lack of enthusiasm for fusion, though I do find Allan Holdsworth and some Zappa (of you can place Zappa in the fusion catagory) tolerable.

Though for me it's the same with shred players, theres some great technical ability, but some low down Chicago blues actually does more for my soul.

Rob...

Actually it is a very nice looking git you got there 8) .  And you studied with Larry Coryell? Wow. I still have that Barefoot Boy lp. Greetings from the birthplace of the blues. :)

Nice guitar, very nice! Incidentally, how did you manage to get the chance to study with someone like Larry Coryell?

Regarding fusion...I think it's got something of a bad name, hasn't it? But I still love lots of it...just not all. Some of it is mindless shredding, for sure, but there are lots of great moments in it. I love Mahavishnu and John McLaughlin, although that's as much for Billy Cobham's incredible drums as anything. And the Chick Corea Electric Group are pretty damn good...same with Zappa. And there's lots of interesting things happening on the US 'Left Coast' scene, although that veers incredibly close to avant-garde rather than fusion I guess. At the end of the day though, I'd still prefer someone like Charlie Parker or the mighty 'trane to most fusion. Blues is cool but only the originals, I don't really dig the way that what started as the music of the (often racial) underdog has become middle-class middle-aged white man's music. As Frank Zappa sneered, 'make up sad songs...blow your harmonic, boy...' It's just a personal opinion, though.

Rory Gallagher and those players who took blues onwards, I like them very much. :)

Larry came to my home town in Southern Spain and a few guitar players were chosen to be his pupil for a 15 day course.

I couldn't "compete" with his jazz playing as I am not a jazz musician but hey he really enjoyed my blues playing. "You must be making records, young man" was his veredict.  I must admit I was pleasently flattered!!

Hey! You can download a very crude video I've just done. Sorry for the lack of preparation. It's een recorded with a SONY digital still camera. The sound is nothing like the real thing but hey.... you might get an idea.

My Fender reverb was in a studio so no reverb watsoever. Only some nasty echo from a rather bad sounding room.

please be kind....

What I meant is that I'm wearing a tracksuit. The thing is I'm recovering from a minor operation so comfy clothes are a must.

BTW, the tone you can hear is NOTHING like the real thing. the built-in microphone is not for judging tone really. LOL

Great lookin' guitar. That has got to be the best clean (well almost clean) tones I've ever heard coming from a Les Paul.

It could be a great rockabilly guitar as well with that tone. Very sweet. I feel GAS coming up.

Cheers!!
The amp is pure class A with no negative feedback loop so perfect clean is not really easy to get nevertheless a very nice and unique sound!!

Those raw nickel covers (thats what they are right?) look AWESOME. If I get an LP that colour scheme I will definately go for some of those. Sounds very good to me even with the cr@ppy in built mic.

That Bigsby looks cool as $%&# - I've thought of doing that to my own LP std before.  what is the tuning stability like? how do you think it impacted on your tone versus the stopbar?

I use the Bigsby a lot there're no tuning problems whatsoever. The tone didn't change much, it improved if anything really.
