Title: May I ask for advice on finishing/relicing.
Post by: jibidy on June 27, 2012, 08:39:09 PM
So I bought a RGD7421

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eg_page12.php?area_id=3&data_id=232&color=CL01&year=2012&cat_id=1&series_id=73 (http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eg_page12.php?area_id=3&data_id=232&color=CL01&year=2012&cat_id=1&series_id=73)

I like it all bar one thing. Horrible black finish, I said t myself I would never buy another black guitar, but 7 string are tough to come by in any other finish or colour.

Its a matte or satin finish.

What I'd like to do is relic it so it looks a bit beaten and used, but also I'd like to scr@pe around the edges and use a soldering iron to burn a Brogue like design into the wood of the guitar, so it doesn't look like just another metal guitar... and hopefully I can drop some Bareknuckles in there and it will look Badass.

Like a cross between

And

And slighly relic'd like a fender custom shop or something.

I'm just wandering....

Would I need to finish the wood off with oil or some sort of sealant so the wood doesn't dry out or something?

Will it be okay for me to burn the wood a little? Obviously theres massive risk of fire! Maybe douse with water before applying heat?

Any input would be really cool!

Thanks all

J

Most relic'd finishes are done on thin-skin finishes with a mind to relic and wear being applied to them.

I've refinished guitars and tried alternate finishes and to be honest most have met with disaster but that's okay because they were guitars I could afford to lose.

Why not get a silver marker and

it?

at least that way you'd get to test the pattern you use prior to marking the guitar indellibly. :)

pyrography on guitars is nothing new - i have seen some great examples done with just a soldering iron

a simple oil finish will be best to maintain.
