Excellent !   The fish were really jumpin' on that one .  8)

Incidentally, as you have brought a remarkable level of Jazz playing to the forum, I am curious as to what your  Jazz evolution / path of knowledge was.   It is a nice chance for me to understand the specifics / development of what has obviously been very effective for you.  :D

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

From a jazz point of view, the main things that I got into were Martin Taylor (he used to do an awesome fingerstyle jazz section in guitar techniques- really good transcriptions of jazz stds, and not just obvious ones). Also Howard Morgens books (particularly the Gershwin one) are very good. Obviously Joe Pass, and I do some stuff with a female singer so I tracked down the Ella and Joe Pass cds which are well worth tracking down. I think I've accumulated most of his stuff over the years.

From the single note stuff point of view, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Pat Martino are all players that I think it's worth learning solos for note for note and stealing licks. You probably know all that already though.

Actually one thing I found really got me to improve was learning one particular progression (like a jazz blues) inside out, and learning every possible substitution over it and then figuring out what notes you can play in which bit to get a particular sound. Once you've done that with one set of changes, it's relatively easy to apply that knowledge to other changes. So I found it best to focus on one tune really intensively, rather than try and learn lots of different ones. That said, you do get sick of the same changes after a while.....

Anyway, thanks for asking, take it easy

David

Whilst I gained a lot from reading your full reply,  the sentence above really made me smile.  :)   As you may  have gathered, I share that sentiment !   8)

Nothing you said was 'old news' - and as a ( somewhat absent minded,  middle aged ) novice to all this,  I appreciated your detailed reply - which I have copied to 'Notepad' for reading at leisure over a cup of tea.

Cheers !  :D

Very nice indeed- what a tone! There will come a time when I think about my 339 and I think I know which way I am going to go with it.

The Stormies are indeed sweet.  :)   I would say that for absolutely clean and sweet - the Manhattans are the 'Secret Weapon' .  Both Stormy Mondays and Manhattans bring an elegance and sweetness to this sort of stuff.  I would have enjoyed hearing djl  playing these pieces with  Manhattans and his 'usual' amplifier.

Incidentally, I believe djl said / wrote ( in the text of another Stormy Monday clip ) - that he was using a Carr 'Viceroy'  as the amp on these .  :)
