Title: New build needs BK's
Post by: Zummooz on July 14, 2012, 02:37:34 PM
Hi all  :D

1st up I already have a set of BK's.
Mule in the (N) and Abraxas in the (B) on a Warmoth rear routed.
Solid Alder Strat with High Grade Quilt Maple top, In Black Dye.
Neck wood is Raw Pau-Ferro with Ebony / Black fretboard.
Using a Recessed TOM and Angled String though.
It really is one of my favourite guitars to play, just sounds GREAT, I have a number of different guitars too.

So I'm here for another set of BK's and need some direction / advice.
This build is ……
Chambered Alder Strat with Super High Grade Quilt Maple top, Tiger Eye finish. Rear routed.
Neck wood is Imbuia finished in Clear Satin Nitro with a (Wild looking) Ziricote fretboard.
Wilkinson Tremolo

It's desperately needing 2 x Humbucker BK pickups !!
Already decided there having the Tyger Covers   :D

Really like the ones I have already, But would like something slightly different. I like each guitar to be different.
Not sure how much difference there is in Solid to Chambered bodies,
as that's about the only difference here in these 2 guitars.

So I'm not sure if I should be looking at the more Mid's and Treble for this chambered body.  :?

Was thinking of …. Black Dog (N) and Holy Driver (B)
Emerald   (N) and Holy Driver (B)

I'm not a heavy metal guy, think more the classic british Zep sounds.

Anyone used those combo's or have similar spec's on guitar ?
OR
Have any better idea's ?

Hey I DO KNOW that this is that #1 hardest question to ever ask on a forums ……
But thought someone here might just have a better idea with the above spec's I have given.

Go easy on me …… it's my 1st post.  :D

Thanks all .... Cheers from Downunder.

The Emerald (N) / Holy Diver (B) is a match made in heaven and it'll certainly suit the guitar and the tones you're after.
You might like the RR neck & Black Dig Bridge. Also take a look at the crawler.

Crawler performs great in strats and oozes bluesrock and classic rock. Don't be afraid the topend will be too smooth or dull. It's not, it's round, but still present.

All great suggestions. Like Telerocker says, The crawler is great in strats. As for the neck, I've only heard good things about the emerald. I'd love to see some photos of the guitars you mentioned if you had any? :D

Hi and welcome in the name of the forum staff^^

First off: PICS!!!!

Then could you give us a little more info on the styles you play, tone you want and gear you use?
Cause as you already see, there are many options that work wonderfully, but each are a little different.

Personally for british zep style I would get something more classic than the HD bridge. In my mind either Crawler or obviously for zep sounds the Blackdog (maybe a set of either even?).

Strange though, very recently, Tim said himdelf that after having Pages LP for a few days, the Riff Raff and another BKP was closest to his tone and not the Black Dog. :? But BD bridge rocks in any LP.

I think Crawlers are your best bet here.

OK Ok Ok …. all you had to do was ask for pic's and you shall receive  :D

pic's added below of my 1st guitar using BK's.
(2nd still in process will post pic's on completion)

I don't play live or any gigs, I have a Home / Studio set-up. With lots of toys.
I don't have one style of music, I do all sorts of different stuff, so it's really hard to say what Tone etc I'm after.
Just looking for (BK's) something different to what I already have in the one in pic's.
Which has similar woods etc.

Have some amps, but rarely play though them.
I plug-in to a RME Fireface 400 then into imac and use Logic.
Also use GK-3 pickups for driving synths with the guitars, have some internal GK-3 in some builds I've done.
Do have a Standard Gibson LP and 61' SG Reissue.
Rest are Warmoth built guitars by me, with many different pickup combo's and sounds.

**OK back to this build**
You got me on the 'Crawler' for the Bridge.

What you think of pairing that (Crawler) with a 'Emerald' in the neck ?

I usually, well mostly,  go for different pups for bridge and neck. Just me !!

Thanks all for your input thus far.   :D

OK you Guitar Porn addicts .....

Here's my Black High Grade Quilt Strat with a Mule in the Neck and a Abraxas in the bridge.
A dream to play !!

Holy sh*t that looks like velvet! WoW, VERY nice stuff you got going there.

And yes, if don´t also wanne get the Crawler neck, the Emerald should do very well, keeping with the smooth theme but delivering a different flavour making a tasty tone sandwich....mmhhh sandwich (god I gotta get some breakfast).

Thanks guys ...... Glad you like it   :D

OK just about to order, Emerald for the Neck & a Crawler for the Bridge.
(when that guitar is done, will surely post some pic's of that)

Wiring wise ....
This is probably my best option, as I'm only having 1 x Vol & 1 x Tone and using a 3 way toggle.
https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/downloads/schematics/general/humbuckers/2_hum__4con_1_push_pull_vol_coilsplit__1_tone__3_way_toggle.pdf

Worth coil splitting those puppies ?

Other wise I'll just do basic wiring ....
Thanks again for all your help, all.  :D

I hear the crawler splits very nicely. So I´d try it!

A coil split emerald doesn't sound very much like a single cool but it gives really nice hairy, warm sound that is absolutely excellent for grunge and indie like soundgarden or the black keys.

Imagine one of those very low output but creamy and naturally slightly "overdriven" neck P90s that you'd find in vintage Gibson semi-hollows like the ES-135. It sounds excellent and I use it a LOT. It just doesn't sound like you expect from a single coil. Highly recommended

It does! I have a Crawler in a swampash HSS-customstrat and the splitted tone is stellar. You will get a balsy strattone from the single bridgecoil.

Did order a Emerald (N) and a Crawler (B) for this build.   :D

There in the mail, coming my way    (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-excited001.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

Ummmm ....  (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused013.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)  they were both cheaper than what the web site prices state.

So what do you do  (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused005.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) ....... Toss in a couple of Bare Knuckle T-Shirts.

Which were cheaper as well   (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy036.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

How did you get free t-shirts?

Ummm .... I didn't mention FREE T-Shirts.   :?

I meant since the pickups were cheaper than stated on the site.
Thought while I'm at it (shopping) and the T-Shirts were cheaper too and anything else I wanted in my trolley.

I just thought .......... why not   :D
