Hi everyone ,new member here :D
Which bridge pickup would you recommend for my 6string rg870qmz?its current configuration is dimarzio paf pro for both bridge and neck and a stock middle pickup which i dont use.I want to keep the neck dimarzio
I play melodic prog power metal and aggressive children of bodom style
Since i am unaware of wiring stuff etc. do i have to know any special technical info regarding bareknuckle pickups?or just install like all passive pickups?
-
Hey Nvoults, Welcome to the forum! BKP are wired the same as any other passive pickup. Just match up the wires from your dimarzio bridge pickup and your set. Children of bodom made me think that the aftermath would be a good choice. It's probably the tightest pickup BKP makes, extremely fast bass response, great for stocatto kinda stuff, really nice high end. You get loads of mid punch as well.

Thanks! What about the holy diver?
-
I can chime in about the diver. My guitar is a ESP LTD F-200 basswood that i've been modding and goofing around with for the last ten years lol.
Currently has a diver in it and It would be like the aftermath i reckon but organic and a sweeter top end that is slightly rolled off producing a less "present" sound. Mid range aggressive sound is there just like the aftermath. One great diff between the 2 is the holydiver has great cleans.
But imo for children of bodom type stuff I'd stick to a ceramic for basswood. And would look into the Blackhawk as it's like the EMG's that Alexi used for his albums.
My 2 cents and GL on your tone quest!

i Forgot to mention i play 80's style tunes as well but the most is melodic prog power and to a minor percentage it is COB...
So you'd think the holydiver is a more versatile option right?
-
Yeah, the holy diver is basically a toned down version of the aftermath. The cleans are great if you needed them but the aftermaths cleans are still a ton better than the EMG's alexi uses in COB. If you wanted to get close to the active kind of tone then I'd go with blackhawks or possibly Miracle man set. Also yes, the holy diver will be a lot more versatile. You may need some kind of overdrive for the more powerfull stuff though.
-
Well, the holydiver is at home in basswood and is made for 80s, melodic power and prog styles. Miracle Man would be better for CoB and does 80s stuff too, but the Diver is your ticket, I am sure of that.
I just think you will end up changing the neck PU too, cause the diver neck is amazing....but let the bridge do the concincing first ;)
But be carefull with the wiring advice from James_B_K_P. While it is of course true that BKPs are just like other passives, be aware that they use a different color code on the wires than Dimarzio. You can still pace the hot and ground at the same points as with the Dimarzio, they will just have different colors.
For reference a copy and paste from the FAQ, which should give you all the info you need.
What is the Bare Knuckle Four conductor colour code?
Answer: Black =start of screw coil
White = finish of screw coil
Red = start of slug coil
Green = finish of slug coil
For standard series operation solder the red to the pot tag, the black to ground(usually the back of the pot casing) and solder the green and white together.

Thanx for spotting the different colours issue bro!
I wish they were more clips on the tube to help me choose, but i am leaning towards the holydiver...
I see people comparing it with SD JB or screamin'demon and the blackhawk with emgs?Is that a true fact?
I used to have emgs in almost all my guitars (sold them) cause i got pretty much bored of them...
-
Ah yes! Apologies for the cr@ppy advice on swapping out the pickups. I just mean that you don't need different pots or anything extra.
-
Yep the holydiver is pretty awesome at being versatile. But I wouldn't throw out the blackhawk because to me the hawk seems like one of or if not the most versatile pickup BKP has in it's lineup.
I wish i had person experience though. It just basically comes down to if you want the more organic sounding HD with a sweeter rolled off top end Or the blackhawk that is slightly stiffer sounding and with a great hi presence without sharpness. Both have good cleans to my ears from the clips but i know the cleans on the diver are very nice.
But for reference on the MM. First BKP i had for my basswood guy. Very very tight and compressed sounding. BUT it has such a nice and very kick ass POW quality when you hit a power chord hard with full distortion its hard not to love. Cleans are sterile and dead though. Was a sort of one trick pony with me.
Another good option would be the Ceramic Nailbomb. Coldsweat too if you love a giant mid scoop for a pickup.
Edit : If your going to get the diver try out some 1 meg ohm volume/tone pots. I have it on my guitar at the moment. Opens the sound of the sucker pretty damn good and with the sweet top end of the HD you can get away with it easy.

I think i will give a try on the holy diver.....and maybe in the future the MM,the aftermath, the blackhawk....ALL
Just one more question : The covered bridge option has the same dimensions as the open bridge option pickup?
-
Yep its same dimensions. Have fun :)

Ah yes, welcome to the psycho path. Think back to this statement when you are seeing guitars as things you can put BKPS in...and want to catch em all!
I wanne buy guitars to put BKPS in them at this point. I am no longer a player, I am a tone collector xD
I buy nice pieces of wood and transform them into things I give names to. They are not tools, they are...well I cannot find the words but I play them as much as they play me. It is a back and forth, with something that has a soul. All cause I matched the voice to the wood.
Now I want all BKPs.
īTis cause I am fully sure that every BKP is great.
-
Boring addition, the Holy Diver would be spot on.
-
Just ordered the holydiver baby!
-
Just a small review.....
I am using the axefx ultra as my main rig at home or rehearsals.I might say at first i was a little disappointed because the holydiver in combination with that particular basswood in my premium rg created a very bassy and bright at the same time with awful mids.....So i was ready to go back to my stock pickup until i tried to compensate eq .I lowered freqs from 63-2K and HELL YEAH!The monster came alive!tight screaming tone!this pickup is a harmonics beast!Every preset sounds classy more than ever!
Strongly recommended for basswood

HD works in all wood types. 8)

Congrats, hope it excites. Fiddle with the height to find the sweet spot. Scatterwound pickups are sensitive for that.
