Title: Whick BKPs for Hagstrom Viking II (ES 335 type semit hollow made of basswood)?
Post by: rallax on July 15, 2012, 10:54:48 AM
Hi,

may be you can help by selecting the right BKPs.
I want to replace the stock humbuckers 2× Hagstrom,
Custom 58N 7,18 kOhm and Custom 58B 8,19 kOhm of my hagstrom viking II with a set of BKPs.
The viking II is a es 335 type semi hollow made of laminated basswood with 2 HBs and tun-o-matic bridge. It has a bolt on neck with 6 in a line headstock.
I would like to have a more modern rocksound like Foo Fighters Dave Grohl.
I have already a set of Nailbombs and a set of Black Dogs in two other guitars.
I'm now thinking the install a set of Black Dogs in the viking too. But I am not sure if BDs are the right ones.
May be you got some other ideas? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks a lot!

Greetings from germany.

Ralf

Greetings Ralf !  :)

The Foo Fighters ( and modern Rock in general ) are not my usual listen, but I went over to 'You Tube' to hear a few songs. My abiding impression is that he is using Vintage / medium output pickups, and his 'sound' is them being  punched through a cranked Amp.    I hear a certain cut and clarity on the edge, that Riff Raffs or even Mississipi Queens would give. I would use Riff Raffs , but Mississipi Queens if you want some thickness coming out of the guitar itself.  Traditionally, Riff Raffs are recommended round here for Rock / Rock'n'Roll / many applications where you want that cut and clarity, with a balistic 'snap' to punctuate the chords.

I hope the better informed guys advise as to what they think, but the sound I heard on the Foo Fighter's tracks ( especially Live ) was medium output, with a cutting edge - and a melting amplifier.

* Late Edit*
I found that  in a  heavier laminate  / Basswood 335 copy ,  the bass strings tended to need brightening / tightening up. They do not have the same resonance of a high priced (thin skinned ) 335.

The more I think about this whole project, the more I say Riff Raffs.  :)

I have RiffRaff on my Hofner Verythin, and they do deliver serious rock tones - I usually use a SG with ABomb bridge in my band but I could do most of the set with the Hofner, except for two songs where no semi-hollow could work (IOW the problem is not with the pups).

From what I remember of the Viking II (which I tried when I was looking for an affordable semi) I think the RiffRaff would work better than Black Dogs for this guitar - they will tighten and brighten the guitar, which is already middy enough by itself, and they have all the required punch, bite and tightness for grunge and indy rock stuff. But don't take me on words and AskTim(tm) before you pull the trigger.
