I've been thinking about getting an extension cab for my Engl Screamer combo for a big, deep metal sound, but I'm completely new at this, so I could use some advice on what to look out for.
My thoughts were either pickup a closed back 1x12 and run it with the combo speaker or a closed 2x12. Would one option be a better choice? Also wondering what specific cabs/speaker combos will work well here.
Haven't though about it enough to come up with a firm budget, but £300 is probably what I'd come up with. Don't mind looking at used gear, save for the fact that it seems to be hard to get around these parts.
Much appreciated.

i'd maybe go 2x12 on the basis that the engl screamer has an open-backed cab (doesn't it?) and might sound weird combined with a closed-back 1x12.
eminence texas heat and swamp thang sound pretty good together for a deep metal tone- though there's a slight grittiness/graininess in the mids of the texas heat which doesn't suit all amps. I thought it sounded good with my engl (savage se, which might not sound exactly the same as your screamer), but my jet city wasn't as fussed. so might be worth bearing in mind.

get a dark sounding 2x12. I have the engl 2x12 with vintage 30s and although it has great bass response and tightness it can also add brightness and harshness to the mids just like the screamer speaker itself. I'd trial your screamer with a few marshall 2x12s and 1x12s and avoid vintage 30s.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. As usual, the second I get a plan, a new idea comes up and I'm thinking something like a used Axe FX might suit me better than an amp for what I end up doing.
Still, I'll likely go this route if I stick with the Engl, so thanks again for the advice!

no problem
another option would be to swap the speaker in the engl for a darker speaker- would give you some idea of how the 2x12 idea might work without having to actually fork out all the money required for the 2x12.

axe fx is a risk when you're used to tube tone! check out this dude, amaaaazing tone with his screamer in combination with a tc g system. u can change channels with midi n all!

That is a damn good sound...this warrants more experimenting! :)
What kind of cabs are on the darker side? I'd imagine something like a Mesa recto cab or one of those Zillas Nolly uses? What else is out there?
