Hey guys! Picking the wood for my custom LP build, and I'm just having such a hard time deciding which one or two I'd take (in case my top choice was taken by now). I could use some help here, so which tops do you like and why? BTW, I think my top three at the moment would be 6, 1, then 3.

Unless they're all forum coloured, I suspect your pics aren't working ;)
-
Yeah, I suck at posting pictures. Mind giving me a few hints?

Replace the above <> with [] and stick the full URL of the pictures between them. If they're not hosted online you'll need to upload them to something like Flikr or the like.
Or, click on addition options on the post screen and attach them there.

I hope this works lol

at least I got em up! thanks.

no.2 for a wider flame, no.4 for a thinner tiger stripe.
-
I love 2, but the only reason I'm not picking it is because I'm leaning more towards a thinner flame. I'm using Pearly Gates as a reference for the color, just trying to go for when she was new, with a fuller burst, and I figured I might as well have a Pearly inspired top as well!
-
I know you've said you're leaning towards a thinner flame, but I like no.2 best personally.
-
Also leaning towards number 2.

1 or 5 for me, but I like character tops :)
-
1. I hate quilted tops. They seem plastic and they're too thick and "glamourous".

that has a lot more to do with the finish and type of guitar quilted tops normally get subjected too - works great with a thin oil finish too!!

I dunno... Even now it seems a bit too much :/
Anyway, I like thin and reasonably uneven flame... Quilt and perfectly even flame just doesn't look nice... Especially on LPs... I can't stand quilt on Les Pauls.

agree! -> top 5

Yeah, likewise, I prefer the ones which have patterns going all over the place rather than "perfect" flames or quilt.
As for quilt generally, it can look far too blingy but on the whole it's more interesting than flame, IMO. I like it when it resembles waves or sand dunes, if it's the right colour it looks brilliant.
-
It shouldn't matter because since it's a Les Paul you'll obviously be painting it black or gold, right?

It can, and I have a great looking top on one of my guitars, but I don't really like it if I'm truly honest. I wish it was flame
-
Ya know, after pretty much staring at them all day, I think I've settled on #1. 6 has a little bit too much going on, and I feel like 3 doesn't have quite enough. I like 1 cuz it has a great defined flame, and also has alot of cool grain underneath, with a few mineral spots. I like it!

The blue one? I like it a lot. As I've said before, the green one looks like jungle foliage and the blue one looks like rippling water. I think PRS chose the colours really well. :D
I'll take it off your hands.... if it's less than a grand. :P
-
I think you chose well. Had I got here sooner, I'd have suggested #1 too.

Thanks! It really was a tough choice, but I felt like it had the most to offer all in all.

Agree too. Especially number 5 is great.
-
Yeah, I mean, all of them were absolutely great, it was so hard to pick. 5 was definitely a great one, it started sneaking up my list, but 1 held it off in the end.
-
IMO Number 2 has the most character. 1 is nice, too, actually in 1 I can also kind of see already a guitar shape embedded in the figuring. But I'd stick with #2
-
I certainly agree withh no.1
Excellent choice.

Thanks! I think so too, this top is closest to what I imagined in my head.

I think that was one of the reasons I picked 1, because I felt safe knowing I can sort of see the shape in there, with the others, you never know. 2 was marvelous though. I can definitely see that kind of top on a lemon drop, which, coincidentally, is the next LP I want.... hmm...

damn, beaten to it
