Title: hiwatt hg212 "high gain" cabinet?
Post by: ericsabbath on August 03, 2012, 11:17:31 AM
so... I'm getting one of the chinese made hiwatt 2x12 cab on a trade
it has chinese fane 100w speakers

I couldn't find much info around internet
contacted hiwatt and they answered pretty fast but they did'nt have any info on the speakers, except that they were made by fane in china

I'll have it home in a couple weeks but I'd like to know what to expect
cab seems solid, but I couldn't find anything about the speakers quality or voicing

not sure of which of these speakers it comes with (apparently the purple label one):

I had the HiWatt High Gain 50w 2x12 Combo and it was very sturdy and with a MM loaded Les Paul and an MXR 10 band eq i could dial some awesome tones out of it, sadly i trade it for a PRS CE24 a few years ago.

Overall i found the speakers to be have a nice voicing and the combo had a good bit of thump to it

nice to hear
I think the combo has the 150w speakers, though (white label)
getting a prs is always a great deal  :D
I hope I'll have it home before my next gig in a couple weeks
carrying my 1960 4x12 alone is always a pain in the ass (and in the rest of my back)
thanks for the response, brother

update:

so, I just grabbed an early Weber-made Scumback M75 65w for cheap and swapped one of the chinese Fanes
the cab is announced as 200w, but the speakers are actually 150w each (bad, bad math, Hiwatt)
the speakers are very well built, unlike most cheaper Celestion models made for entry level Marshalls
the magnet is a couple milimeters narrower than the M75's magnet, but about 30% taller, so I'm guessing it's a 38 oz, maybe 40 oz ceramic magnet
only played them together for 20 minutes, and I'm really enjoying the mix
both are long broken-in and they seem to blend really well without one overpowering the other (which is rare, in my experience), so I'm guessing both are about 97 db sensitive
might try to record a mixed speaker riff raff clip these days

Congrats! They look solid. I would love to try the Weber. I play V30's now, but it would be cool to try something else with a bit less highmid spike.
