Title: Birthdays
Post by: Frank on August 07, 2012, 02:04:47 AM
From a debate on another forum, thought we should try it here - what was the Number One Single on the day you were born?

http://www.everyhit.com/dates/

July 22nd 1967 for me, that was The Beatles, All You Need Is Love. That's what I get for being born in the Summer of love.

The site says I share a birthday with George Clinton and Don Henley. I also know I share a birthday with Danny Glover (yay!) and Bonnie Langford (ugh)

Disappointingly, Art Garfunkel's "I Only Have Eyes For You" but, in happier news, I share my birthday with Hank Marvin and Ben Harper which pleases me.

The Number 1 single was:

Cilla Black - "You're My World"  :|

The Number 1 album was:

Rolling Stones - "Rolling Stones"  (that's better!  :D )

People who share my birthday are pretty boring too:

1936 - Tommy Devito ( guitarist, vocalist, The Four Seasons )
1944 - Robin Box ( White Plains )  :?
1948 - Nick Drake
1959 - Mark Debarge ( of US family group Debarge )
1963 - Paula Abdul

Nick Drake is, of course, cool - but long deceased.  :(

I know I also have the same birthday as Brian "Head" Welch, the Korn guitarist who went loopy and got religion.  And I was born on exactly the same day as our esteemed Mayor, Boris Johnson.....

I guess compared to some other dates, the music for me isn't too bad. 10/05/88 had U2's Desire, and Bon Jovi's New Jersey in the top spots.

I'm relatively happy with the people I share my DOB with, just a few are Brian Johnson from AC/DC, Steve Miller, Bob Geldof, Bernie Mac, hockey players Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy.

I already knew mine, Frank Ifield's "Wayward Wind" (and Cliff and The Shadows "Summer Holiday" was the album).

And just a few short hours later it would have been even cooler:

1948 - Rory Gallagher ( guitarist, solo and in Taste; deceased ) WAY COOL
1950 - Karen Carpenter ( vocalist, drummer, The Carpenters; deceased ) WAY COOL

1977 - Chris Martin ( lead vocals, keyboards, Coldplay ) Can't win em all I guess...

1958 - Nik Kershaw Oh Dear

You surprise me, Andy - I've always thought Nik Kershaw is a decent songwriter/guitarist who "accidentally" became a pop star for his 15 minutes.

1958 - Nik Kershaw Oh Dear

You surprise me, Andy - I've always thought Nik Kershaw is a decent songwriter/guitarist who "accidentally" became a pop star for his 15 minutes.

I would have said the very same thing a few weeks back, not having listened to him for years. But I recently saw some old BBC performances of his, and that has obviously coloured my current thinking

The music was still the same, not quite as appealing to me as I remember, but he does seem to have suffered more on the "oh dear, 80s" looks-front than some others might. (It might be because he wasn't happy having to look like that at the time? Who knows...)

And, Cilla Black, the young, singing one... oooo.... I'd have been very happy to have found her on my birthday list.

1968 - Jason Donovan ( vocalist and actor )

Sadly, no

I had a big crush on her in the days of the Cilla Black Show.

The slightly, er, brasher lady that did Blind Date and all... no thanks.

Mind you, I also liked Des O'Connor

(But remember this was back when they were singers with their own TV show, rather than game-show and chat-show hosts like they ended up being.)

I can just about remember the Cilla Black and Des O'Connor shows - but only in the sense that I remember them existing, I can't recall any of the actual content.

But I never liked either of them as singers!  In recent years, I like Des as a host/personality, but I think Cilla is a right old cow!

Mines very electro-pop:

The Number 1 single was:
Tubeway Army - "Are Friends Electric?" (a track which I moderately like)

The Number 1 album was:
Electric Light Orchestra - "Discovery"  (an album I am unlikely to buy, though I like their later track "Ticket to the Moon")

I share a birthday with Woody Guthrie.

All not too bad.

Haven't really mentioned this before, but in my early teens I was a massive ELO fan.  Their mid-'70s albums, especially A New World Record and the (huge-selling) Out Of The Blue were really good.

Discovery was the one which started to put me off - it seemed over-produced (in retrospect, so were the earlier albums!  ), there were some dud songs and it was revealed that the string section generally didn't play on the records, instead being replaced by (horror of horrors) synthesisers.  I was not impressed.

And then I discovered Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow....

I am finding this thread very depressing. Many of  the songs that were No 1 when you were born seem like they were out not that long ago to me- which makes me feel very old.

On the other hand, think how incredibly ancient Cilla must be if she was No. 1 on the day Boris Johnson was born!

For extra fun, google "died" and your birthday. By the laws of reincarnation that's who you were in a previous life.

December 20th, 1967, which is incidentally the day after John Wheeler coined the term "black hole".

Beatles were number one with Hello Goodbye (it was a good year for them).

Share birthdays with amongst others Bill "Tiger" O'Reilly (one for the cricket fans. I've actually visited the town where he was born, which shows real dedication if you care to look it up on the map), and Uri Geller.

I couldn't find anyone interesting who died that day, but I did learn that the last episode of The Twilight Zone was broadcast on the day I was born.

So maybe that's why I've always liked the show?  I've just recently bought the first four seasons on Blu-ray.

The Number 1 single was:  Mud - "Oh Boy"

The Number 1 album was: Bay City Rollers - "Once Upon A Star"

1966 - Johnny Colt ( bassist, The Black Crowes )
1970 - Bernard Butler ( guitarist; solo and with Suede / McAlmont & Butler )

Even though the Number 1 was shyte (but chart music is nearly always bollocks anyway), I share my birthday with Bernard Butler who is well cool in my book, great guitarist.

Actually White Cliffs is a very interesting place to visit, and thoroughly recommended.

I only found out that Bill O'Reilly was born there after I arrived. They even have a cricket oval named after him!
