Title: P/U Suggestions for a 'Heavy' Hardcore tone.
Post by: jordandans on August 07, 2012, 11:25:31 AM
Hey guys I was told by someone on another forum that a friend purchased a BKP to put into a telecaster build from Warmoth custom guitars that was apparently quite fitting for the tone I'm after. The only problem is once I asked which specific p/u it was he never replied.

I myself recently bought a Telecaster and I'm looking to swap my p/u's for something better.
My Tele is a MIM 2004 Standard.

The tone I'm after is similar to that of Hardcore bands like Violation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnALqr2swRo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnALqr2swRo)) & Bitter End (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP1L04YbBBc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP1L04YbBBc)).

At this point in time I play through a Marshall 1960a 4x12 w/ G12T-75's (looking to maybe swap out 2 for 2 V30's) via my single channel Tiny Terror. I don't have any OD pedals or anything. It's a fairly simple plug in and play set up at the moment.
In the future I'll most likely be looking into getting a Peavey 5150/6505 or something similar.

So basically any suggestions on a BKP or possibly something completely different that would go well with my ideal tone that'd be great.

Thanks to everyone for reading.

Also I should probably mention that I'm looking a for Neck & Bridge combination and that I'm more than willing to order a new pickguard and a new bridge to accommodate a humbucker or anything else.

That sound seems to ask for a humbucker in the bridge at least and a powerful one at that. If you're after that very aggressive tone you might want to start by looking at a Nailbomb. It's very tight and very aggressive, even in alnico form and will certainly be so in something like a Telecaster. Personally I find them too OTT unless there's mahogany to help tame the beast but it may well be right up your street. The Warpig would be another option for a huge tone that I think you'd really like. In either case, look at the alnico options in a Tele.

Like Slartibartfarst42 said the nailbomb might be too bright in a tele. Maybe a pig90 or a Stockholm could work?

I play music very similar to bands like Strife and Bitter End, maybe more of a '90s influenced vibe, and usually use a PRS baritone with Nailbombs.  It's a great match for the sound.  HOWEVER, I am also on this website looking for single options for a couple of telecasters.  The Piledriver looks like the surefire bet for a heavy hardcore sound form a single coil telecaster.  So, I would say Piledriver if you must use a single coil, and Nailbomb if the telecaster has a humbucker routing.  I've owned ceramic Warpigs before and honestly did not like them.
