Title: 5150 with Marshall 1960BV
Post by: puma_21 on August 29, 2012, 03:10:49 AM
Anyone have any suggestions for a smaller 2x12 cab that sounds just as good? The portability of a half stack really sucks. I was thinking Mesa 212 but correct me if I'm wrong, it seems they weigh 20 more pounds then the Marshall 412...

I'd have no qualms at all about recommending a Zilla cab. I have 1 of the Fatboy oversized 2x12s and it's a good sounding, really solidly built cab.

+1 for the Zilla. Amazing cabs.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I checked out their site and I love the custom design. I failed to mention I live in Canada...I imagine the shipping would be insanely expensive.....It doesn't say on the site whether they shop to CA. What kind of speakers in those Zillas?

You can specify the speakers yourself, but as far as I know the most popular choices are V30s or G12Hs. However if you have a Facebook Account just add Paul: http://www.facebook.com/zillacabs

Message him and you'll get an exact pricequote with shipping costs for you desired cab :)

Cheers

Roger that--thanks for your help. I'd definitely go with the V30s...they just sing with the peavey at 11

Avatar cabs are great, I have one and have friends who have them, and they all rock. You can get them finished any way you want with tons of speaker options, and you can even buy "blemmed" (if you can really call them blemmed) for cheap on eBay. I picked up my 4x12 with V30's and casters and everything for $300 because the front was slightly scuffed. I still don't see it, but I gladly took it! I like it much better than Marshall and Mesa cabs I've tried next to it. They sound great and have a good price. I'd look them up.

Given your location I would say to also check out Mills Acoustic cabs, never tried one and I don't know much on their 2x12s but their 4x12s seem to be some of the best out there based off the reviews I've seen

just got a chinese hiwatt "hi gain" 2x12
it's pretty small and looks great and well built
could some v30's, though
didn't play it loud yet
apparently, the chinese fane speakers are in the black shadow/g12k100 ballpark (tons of low end)
I may try black shadows in a month just to confirm that

Wow, I had no idea the chinese were making Hiwatt clones--or is that where they are built? I played on one hiwatt (I think it was hi gain) years ago and it was pretty ballstothewall. I'd buy chinese if the price were right. Let me know how it compares.
