Title: A load of old pollocks!
Post by: WezV on August 31, 2012, 03:52:55 PM
Just picked this up of the bay - a bit of a gamble given the paint and not knowing what is underneath
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/aria.jpg)

Its an Aria Pro II CSB-380 made in Japan sometime in the mid 80's.  the exact model played by Kim Deal on the first few Pixies albums.

now, onto the paint. I actually dont think the person that did this did a bad job, if you like that sort of thing.   I dont so its coming off -

the bass comes apart
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/P1020148.jpg)

After 5 minutes rubbing with paint thinners the back has started to come up nice
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/P1020149.jpg)

sadly the thinners are only moving the white paint - so its time to try something more hardcore
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/P1020150.jpg)

thankfully the guitar seems to be in pretty good condition underneath it all so looks liek my ebay gamble will come up good

Cool!  8)

I saw the pic and thought "Oooooh, Aria Cardinal Series!"

I have had GAS for a CS-400 for over 30 years, ever since seeing this ad in Guitar Player in 1981.  They hardly ever appear on eBay, although you do see the cheaper bolt-on models like the CS-250 and CS-350 occasionally.

I like the finish, but don't like the Stone Roses :-)

Nothing wrong with the Stone Roses. Just putting that out there.

Soz, just had to rant about that. I feel better now.

I like the Stone Roses but absolutely agree that the Pixies are far far far superior.

That's one of the more unusual rants I've seen in a while.

Stone Roses vs. Pixies?  I'm not a fan of either, to be honest.  I did buy a Pixies box set ages ago but couldn't really get into it.*    :|

(* Edit:  I don't mean it was difficult to remove the packaging.)

Not really a fan of either, but I like odd songs. Mr Squires also has a really nice old BMW E30 DTM car that he takes on track.

I have one of these that I got waaaay back in about 1997. Great little bass, particularly for someone like me who mostly plays guitar, as it's only 32" scale length and has narrower than usual string spacing. Sounds pretty good too, through a decent amp.

a bit of nitromors seems to be doing the trick - just a bit left on the sides to do

It's looking good!

One thing I have noticed about these and similar Japanese guitars from the '80s - although the workmanship was really good, they weren't bothered about using multiple pieces of ash in the bodies.  And they made almost no effort at all to match the grain!

Not a problem on mine as it has a solid "revolting blue" finish. But yeah, any I see with any sort of grain are all over the shop.

Saw one of the set neck versions of it in a cash converters a while ago and while I was thinking about it, it got sold. Shame.

i dont think this one is too bad - better than some.

and its actually a lot lighter than i expected for a mat of this period - the body is only 4lb

That's not bad at all, weight-wise!

Looking good - love the colour underneath.

My first bass was an Aria (a Cat Pro II, or something, gave it to my nephew). I didn't know sod all about basses then (and not much more now!), but they seem to have made nice solid ones.

This is looking like a good score to me :)

This has turned out rather nice - i decided not to go for a full restore - instead i have left it with a natural relic that suits its age
