Title: pickup suggestions (hums)...
Post by: barefinger on February 19, 2006, 04:30:44 PM
the guitar is an all mahogany with vintage trem and rosewood fingerboard...

can you give me any suggestions for neck + bridge hums regarding music styles like Led Zep ACDC and ZZ top... not metal! Blues, and most styles or Rock...

thanks

mules, riff raff (for acdc), black dogs (led zep) would be the ones to look into, i'd have thought. Crawlers would be worth a look too.

Having not tried them, I can't really say much more than that.

What's the guitar? SG, LP, Strat?

i described the guitar in the first post... its a strat like guitar (all mahogany with rosewood fingerboard) and vintage trem... i'd like to change both the neck and bridge humbuckers....
 for blues and rock styles...

I think Crawlers are the way to go. Perfect blues/rock pickups that work equally well in strats and LP's. Geoff Whitehorn has a mahogany strat and sounds great.

Mules are pretty versatile but sometimes I wish there was a bit more "bite" in the bridge position, so I'd maybe go for Riff Raffs for a bit more of an aggressive vintage tone. However I havent tried Crawlers which also seem to be very versatile.

thanks for the replies so far... i know things about magnets and how mahogany is rich in mids... the fact is that what i am looking for is versatality... i.e. blues from neck and rock-heavy rock from bridge... i don't want a pickup that will go muddy on me... (although i highly doubt that BK makes muddy pups)

Crawlers are relatively middy but certainly not muddy. Crawler, Mules or Riff Raffs would all be good for what you want. Did you check some of the clips in the players section?

When I was going to put Abraxas in an all mahogany PRS standard, Tim suggested the Abraxas V not the IV (alnico V magnets vs IV).  Other than that, they will work fine.  The new Holy Diver (which is what I have in the PRS), is an amazing rock pickup, excellent drive and lovely harmonic feedback.  It is still a new pickup, but there may be some clips of it around.

Hi, the new Holy Diver is Alnico V.  Tim changed the spec completely and it is a great pickup (others have said so too!!).  It cleans up great - no muddiness, just a sweet lead tone and an incredible chord sound.
