In the process of completing my current board, i'm working on my amp's clean channel. so far i'm looking for a good reverb to add just a bit of ambiance to the clean tone as my amp has none.
i've been looking at the digitech rv-7, EHX holygrail+,
currently the clean tone revolves around a modded CS-3 and a zakk wylde chorus.
i use a delay for my lead tone to add a bit of epicness to it when i boost, but for cleans i just want to make it not so dry.

Well, if you got the cash, go for a Strymon. Either the pure reverb, the Blue Sky, or the tremollo with reverb, the Flint.
I have not personally tried the Flint, but I hear great things about it and judging from the Strymons I´ve tried it is amazing too.
I own the Timeline delay and have spend some time with the Blue Sky which is still on my gas list. It is very versatile and just sounds incredible.

that flint sure looks nice and simple! plus a nice trem on the clean tone never hurts depending on the song... i'll definitely keep that one in mind!

Digitech has just put out a new reverb, the Supernatural, that is absolutely outstanding. It's made for ambient tones like you're looking for, should work perfect.

I had a Holy Grail + for a while and there was something about the tone that never felt right. I know this is a subjective and personal thing but I think if you're considering it you ought to try before you buy if possible.

I'll have a couple available shortly at £85 a pop delivered. They're mostly done, but I just can't decide what to put on the decals for them... They're based on the newer Belton brick (now accutronics). The Spring Chicken uses the older one. No battery provision on them to get it into a small box and because it'd just eat 'em anyhow.

If you're spending more, WET Reverb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paIpgtQ9rcc) (I always end up posting that Burgs demo of that one as it demonstrates what it does perfectly). Dead simple to use and pretty much impossible to get a bad sound out of. The only bought pedal I have that is permanently connected to my amp. Requiring more versitility and you'd be looking at the Hardwire Supernatural (http://proguitarshop.com/andyscorner/hardwire-supernatural-more-info) that everyone's currently raving about. Minted and a knob twidler, go Strymon.

I've got the Flint, it's amazing. Previously had Hardwire RV7, EH Holy Grail Nano and t-rex tonebug... all now sold. The Flint isn't cheap, but it does a hell of a lot!

The flint seems overly nice and is on my GAS list. I got a TC Hall of Fame and it works very well has a lot of options and isn't very expensive.

The Flint is pretty damn near perfect - if in a price range out of most people's pocket. I spent a good 4 hours with it recently and loved it. I would say the Boss FRV1 is closer to the real 63 Reverb (except it doesn't swish when you hit it) and nothing beats a Fender tank - but that reverb is pretty idiosyncratic - i.e. not much subtlety.

I like the Danelectro spring king through fx loop. If you like boingy springy reverb with a touch of slapback echo, the dano box is cool.

I had the EH cathedral and later wished I had gotten either the Digitech RV-7 or the Tc electronic hall of fame. I tested the Line6 verbzilla once and liked it very much. My personal choice would be the digitech though. I've had two other pedals from their series (still have the chorus) and they are just flawless.

Is there any demand for those valve reverb tanks these days?
Maybe if they were put in a pedal form they'd fare better - would still need to be a big pedal with the reverb tank though.

I think the problem with it is that we have people with a hangup when it comes to things being all valve or all analogue. When a SS loop for example can be more practical than a valve with no real downsides, and digital reverbs can be *whispers* better sounding than valve driven springs...

I agree and disagree. If you play surf swamp blues or that type of genre the big Fender valve units are king and do the job in a way digital reverbs can't. But then part of the effect is not the reverberation per se but the low fi nature of the unit - when you hit is makes a spring boing, or dig in and it drips in a certain way. Digital can do that, but it always sounds wrong.
However, that is pretty genre specific and for 'clean' reverb, or more subtle effects or more realistic reverbs that match real rooms/halls/shower cabinets etc, a digital reverb is the way to go - the Hardwire is excellent in that regard.
If I had the cash I would by a Fender 63 Reverb reissue in a flash. However, I have better uses for £600, a Brown Vibroverb with a valve powered spring reverb and so for now the Boss FRV1 pedal or the Digitech will do for my non-reverb loaded amps.
