Title: Pickups for an SG
Post by: steve1991 on September 20, 2012, 01:03:48 PM
hey folks,
Im thinking of sticking some bare knuckles in my Gibson SG 61, though im having difficulty deciding.

I mostly play blues, jazz and a little country and its not very often i use gainy tones and when i do its usually only lightly. I also play 80% of the time with my fingers (fleshy bits not nails)

Im not to sure what set would best suit me, was considering mules or stormy mondays?
also toying with the idea of replacing one of the humbuckers with a mississipi queen?
Also thinking about coil taps?

Also would probably buy some pots and caps whilst im at it, would you folks recommend the 550k for vol and tone over a normal 500?

The Mule are excellent pickups, really suit mahogany guitars. I was going to suggest Riff Raff's untill you brought up the Mule and the Stormy's.
Don't hthink you would be dissapointed with either the Mule or Riff Raff's.

I do think RR's would work well here.

I think any of the pickups from the vintage lineup will do, but I think the stormy Mondays will suit you very well.

Considering your fingertechnique, the mentioned styles and that big lump of mahogany, I would look at the Stormy Monday's.

I think you would be more than pleased with a Mule bridge and Mississippi Queen neck. There's something special about A4 pickups and playing with your fingers. I have an SG with an Abraxas bridge and MQ neck. I absolutely love that setup. I play with my fingers as well, and I'm very happy with my tone. I especially like the. Mississippi Queen. I'm considering replacing the Abraxas with a MQ, and using the Abraxas in my wife's SG Special.
