Ok folks - this has been a long time coming and many snippets here and there but the wheels are finally on the wagon so to speak.
We present Our 20th anniversary model Lion.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/20th%20anniversary%20Lion/2012Logo-thisisthelogothatwehavelaseretchedintotherearoftheanodisedaluminiumbackplatesoftheguitars.jpg)
To celebrate 20 years since I first put a Feline logo on a guitar headstock (sometime end of 1992) I decided to do something a bit special.
So I decided to make a run of special guitars to celebrate
So as it's 2012 I thought lets use that date to come up with a theme
20:12 - to celebrate 20 years we will beuild 12 special guitars
So only 12 of this spectacular guitar will be built.
This guitar is based on our very popular Lion model, and features all MY favourite features - based on what I have found makes for an incredibly sensitive and responsive guitar. (it's a bit like the Chef's special in a posh restaurant).
Features:
Neck
Pearl inlaid Feline logo on headstock
Sperzel locking machineheads
Earvana compensated tuning nut
3 piece quartersawn mahogany neck with volute and 2 way truss rod
Ebony Board with special split Mother of Pearl /Abalone inlays
Ivoroid Binding with Black tahiti pearl side dots
Deep set full width tenon joint - very strong and great tonal tansfer.
Feline all access neck joint - easy access to top frets
Dunlop 6000 fretwire with great fretjob
Body
5A flame or Quilted Maple tops on 2 piece mahogany body
Carefully weight relieved body to enhance tone and give target weight of 8-9(ish)lbs
the bare guitar weighs between 5-6lbs, the pickups and hardware weighs about 2lbs and the paint weighs nearly a pound (amazingly)
Bare Knuckle Pickups
TonePros bridge & TonePro Split Studs for tailpiece
Lightweight aluminium tailpiece - adds top end sizzle
Laser etched 20th anniversary logo on cover plate
Elecs
CTS/Bare Knuckle custom taper 550k ohm control pots
Jensen /Bare Knuckle Paper in Oil capacitors for tone controls
Switchcraft jack socket
All cavities screened with nickel screening paint
Anodised Aluminium rear cover plates
Hiscox Liteflite guitar case and custom tool pouch
Certificate of Authenticity
Price will be £2995.00 (excl carriage)
This is the first prototype that was built earlier in the year , but the other 11 are following on now at a sensible pace.

The cover plates on the rear are now anodised aluminium and the lower plate is laser etched

The all access neck joint is still as sexy as ever....

Next post I will show some of the work in progress on the next models.....

One interesting thing we are doing is that we intend to put a different set of BKPs in each guitar , so maybe for the first time we will have much of the range available to try in almost identical guitars.
That is unless people place orders for them in advance and specify which pickups they would like
The prototype (number 1) has Abraxas fitted in it
Number 2 here will be fitted with Emeralds
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/20th%20anniversary%20Lion/20thanniversary6.jpg)
Number 3 here will have Black Dogs fitted
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/20th%20anniversary%20Lion/20thanniversary3.jpg)
Number 4 is lined up to have Crawlers fitted
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/20th%20anniversary%20Lion/20thanniversary4.jpg)
Number 5 will rock out with a pair of VH2s
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/20th%20anniversary%20Lion/20thanniversary5.jpg)
Here are guitars 6, 7 and 8 taking a rest before coming back into the workshop for fretting .....

Congrats with this milestone! Pretty and exquisit anniversary-line. Topnotch guitars.
-
Congrats! And great looking guitars there, I'm sure they're awesome.
-
WAUW! Stunning guitars (as always :D)! I'm totally GAS'ing the rest of the day.
-
Can't remember the last time I wanted a guitar so badly. I have a 21 year old son in excellent condition, requires occasional beatings and regular beer injections - would you consider a trade ?
-
Looking good Jon, Number 2 looks awesome!
-
Very very cool. Congrats!
Cheers Stephan
-
Gorgeous top on number 3. *RAWR*
-
What about that very first Feline, all those years ago? Any pictures or stories about it for us?
The 20th Anniversary instruments are a fitting celebration!
-
G.A.S. level just raised by 10. Amazing. If I weren't broke I'd totally hit that.
-
Stunning work! love number 5 :-)

You don't want to see that. Back then he was using "rhythm in jump dancing close to you" brand Tremolos..
-
I like the idea of using different pickups in each one! :D That's a change from the original plan, isn't it?
The maple tops are all quite distinctive - will they all be finished in different colours?

The idea of different BKPs in every guitar is definitely cool. It makes me want to visit London for sure :D
-
Yes - the different pickup in each was a more recent decision.
Obviously if someone were to put their money down and say I want number 5 and I want Mules in it rather than the VH2s you'd planned on then we'd oblige.
Also at this stage customers can choose the colour schemes if they get their orders in.
Failing that I will be making decisions based on the grain of the wood and the natural colours of the wood - the more "pink" the timber the more careful you have to be about the tint colour as it will alter the colour more than a pale timber one would.
Since twinfan showing us the new PRS I have been looking at their private stock gallery for inspiration - some nice colours there.
-
Number 4 in Lemon Burst is the one for me... if my Lotto numbers come up :?

Yeah, good idea, I like the more exotic colours!
Number 4 in Lemon Burst is the one for me... if my Lotto numbers come up :?
Fingers crossed for you!
-
You'd like number 4 Philly - it's a bit lighter (7lbs without paint) and has a bigger neck (at the moment)
-
Go on Phil, get your order in!
-
Go on Phil, get your order in!
He could even have it in an unassembled state and keep it under his bed.....
-
The weight and bigger neck do sound tempting, of course....
.....but Number 4? I'd be in direct competition with Afghan! He was first.
Sadly can't see the pics here in work so I can remain resolute about that..... until this evening, at least.
(Anyway, I don't really have the spare cash at the moment - as you know, Mr Jackson! )

Just for a second, before I got my brain into gear, I was thinking that really was a Feline... and I was thinking blimey, sh!tty-looking fretboard...! :?
Well done, guys.

That's why you need to sell me some of that good stuff you got under the bed :-) edit - I'm thinking of guitars here ;-)

Problem is, I'm just as lethargic about selling stuff as I am about building stuff....
There will be some sales, but I don't know what.
-
Wooo...
Looking good :D
-
I'd love 1 of those if I had the spare cash
Unfortunately food and bills need to come 1st or my girlfriend will shout at me
-
absolutely lovely, as usual :)
-
Wow, the prototype, 2 and 3 are just awesome! And that neck joint, super sexy and I'll bet it feels just as good as it looks. Just got my better half to do the Euro lotto... if I win I'll take all 3. The pick up idea is great and it would be cool if you chose the colour based on the pick up/ wood figuring.... and whilst sounding cheesy, naming the guitars based on these specs. 8)

Some more pictures of the next ones:
This is number 5 now it's been sanded down:

Wow!! All those tops are just killer. Especially no 5,6 and 7!
-
^ +1
#8's top is awesome
-
Number 6 has to be a Pearly Gates replica, surely?
-
I'm liking #5 and #8 - to me the quilts appeal more than the flames/stripes. But #3 has some extremely cool grain patterns too.
There really are massive differences in the figuring and the natural colours of the maple! :D
-
Number 6 catches my eye the most I think. I am warming up to quilted maple now but for me it works best in blues and greens where it can show off that watery surface feel. These look like really beautiful instruments Jon.
-
All gorgeous, particularly number 6! Dare I ask if any of the 4 we've still to see will be p90 models? :D
-
WOW! Numbers 4 and 8 particularly for me. Come on lottery numbers.
-
3, 5, 8 just incredible pattern. Love vertical patterns. I think 3 is one of the most beautiful ones I ever seen if not the one.
God I need to rob a bank...
-
majestical work Jonathan. If Les Paul were alive today he would be playing a Feline... 8)
-
All rather lovely but if pushed I would choose between no 5 and no 8.
-
Dare I ask if any of the 4 we've still to see will be p90 models? :D
I would guess not, since these 12 guitars are being built to pretty much a uniform specification, apart from pickups and finishes.
I'm sure you could have P-90 sized humbuckers, though - MQs or Stockholms? :P
-
6 or 7 for me. I seem to prefer plainer tops (not that these are that plain!)
-
6 is awesome, all are, but this one stands out, but I like stripes anywore more than quilted.
-
Here are the remaining 3 right handed ones.....and there will be a lefty to come along as well!
Not sure but I think I like these ones as much as any of the ones so far - it will be hard to let these ones go out of the workshop
Here is number 9 - something a bit special about the pattern in the figure:
Here is the top wood for number 10 - it's a bit mad looking - we've been holding this one back but too nice not to use:

Just a little info for some guys thinking about buying one of these awesome guitars.
I was fortunate enough to play the prototype Lion when I dropped my Strat in for some work. I have to say that it's one of the best guitars I've ever played. There's not many guitars that have blown me away but the Anniversary Lion did.
It may be a pretty penny but it's one guitar that is definitely worth it. I'd even go as far to say it's the Rolex of guitars

These are the pinnacle of what i've done to date in many ways.

Overpriced old man's tat? :? You want to be careful what you say on here, we like Jon's work :D
I'd say they're the Nissan GT-Rs of the Les Paul world ;)

Whoosh! - over my head too I think......
But not overpriced or "old man's tat" - just carefully crafted and lovingly put together... :D
-
I think i'll have to wait for the 25th anniversary (Damn wedding ) but am definately gettiong a lion built
-
One man's Rolex is another man's Nissan GT-R. (And neither of them do owt for me!)
I've been inspecting the pics closer... it seems that I prefer the stripes meself. No 1 or No 2 for me... 6 is a cutie as well :)
-
The more I look, the more I'm liking 9, 10 and 11.... 11 most of all. :o
What colour would that look good in? It's probably too dark/reddish for blues and greens....but it needs something more dramatic than a traditional late-'50s sunburst, I think. A deep red or brown, maybe, with no sunburst (or a very subtle one)?
-
I can see you're tempted Phil, get a deposit in ;)
-

I've personally never liked dark transparent colors and I always find that it ruins such a beautiful quilt top. Why doesn't anyone do quilt tops in vintage amber or lemon burst or something?? It'd look stunning!
Anyone ever seen Mark Knopflers Pensa Suhr? That, IMO, is the ideal colour for a quilt top.

The Knopfler guitar is nice, but it is a bit too much of a light amber colour for me, like a very faded old Les Paul.
It's just personal taste, of course, but I was thinking more these kinds of colours:

Number 7 is now sold - thankyou Phil King
Think either the mules or Riff Raffs will work nicely!
Lovely to see one of these babies go to a BKP forumite.
-
Blimey, well done Phil! :)
I hope this thread will keep going so we can see how these guitars progress.
-
Yes I'll try to keep it updated and show the progress.
Would it help for it to be a sticky topic for a while?

same here. I was just thinking, "oh great, so now i have to learn about cars to know which guitars are good?"
-
9 and 11 could potentially be killer - depends on the colour.

I think I've already made this thread sticky...
Nice one Phil!
-
Very pleased that a BKPer has pulled the trigger on one of these. If only I had the spare £'s.
-
Don't forget that you can spread the cost over a period of time if need be, so that way you end up with a mega guitar without cancelling Xmas.....
-
I've wanted one of Jon's guitars for a while, and playing Juan Solo's reminded me how good they are, so when I saw these I had to do it. It is sweetened by being able to have a couple of different options too. It will have the finish below (the Paul Kossoff Green Lemon Burst) and it's getting nickel hardware with double cream bridge and nickel covered neck pickups (Mules probably). But the biggest difference is that it will have a wraparound bridge/tailpiece. I saw that some of them didn't have the bridge mounting holes drilled, and a quick IM to Jon confirmed that a wraparound was OK. People who know me are aware how much I like wrap around bridges and getting this was just the nudge I needed to put the deposit on No 7 (that and how much I liked the lighter top for the burst option).

If only that period of time was long enough until all of my kids are in school.......
:D

Ha!!
I was reading this thread and thinking number 7 was my favourite by far, and now Phil's got in ;)
Good work mate.

I thoroughly approve of that decision! :D
But will it still "count" as one of the 20th Anniversary models now?

I felt the bridge choice was close enough to still make the grade as little else was changed.
However i still want one for myself.............
I still have a pile of classic BKPs that i want to fit stormy monday, mule, pg blues, cold sweat..... Hope these get chosen by buyers so i can enjoy doing the back to back comparisons between all the variants.

Number 10 with it's mad mix of figure is also now spoken for( to someone I built a guitar for a couple of years ago)

Thought I might as well register on this forum since I've had some BKPs from Jon before and will be having them in this #10 20/12 too. Not sure which ones yet, but my interest was raised by a reissue Gibson that had a Humbucker at the bridge and P90 at the neck. Could be interesting.
I've always had P90s in mind for this guitar, so not sure if I'll go with them in both positions or not yet.
Looking forward to this beauty being constructed, with a few personal touches that won't deviate from the ethos of the range :D
-
That's a good first post!
Well done on #10!
Very jealous.

I'm more than happy to say that you're the only man who can tempt me with wood
Yeah, that piece has been on the radar for a good while now so seemed wrong for it not to be both a 20/12 and mine :)

Hey thanks, (taking credit for ownership rather than craftsmanship on this one)!!
It really is a lovely thing. Korina body, 1 piece quilt veneer to give the visuals without removing the Korina tone, maple 25.5 bolt on neck, ebony board and the P-Rails. These pickups really are great and give such variety of tone. The body is sculpted behind and has a forearm contour too.
Jon and I spent a long time speccing this one out, and a few changes are going to be made now I've used it for a while - moving the pickup selector as it gets in the way when tapping, removing the acoustic module but keeping the MIDI, (the acoustic will go in another model), and in place of the pickup selector, there will be a Buckethead arcade kill switch. :-)
I simply love this guitar, so the 20/12 is very exciting.

I've been threatening a trip to Feline for ages - will have to do this sooner rather than later and treat my long-suffering Les Paul to a refret.

I'd buy a few!

What a wonderful idea :D
Or, to save time and effort, you could just give it to me. We all know that I'd win anyway. :D
But seriously, if that did happen (which is obviously very, very unlikely), i wouldn't hesitate to buy a few tickets.
-
Doing a sweepstake kind of thing sounds quite appealing but I'm not sure if you'd need to have a gambling license to do so or what the ramifications of being caught running such a scheme without a license.
It may be different if you were doing it for charity or to fund a good cause (other than paying your bills)
Anyone know the ins and outs of that?

How about this as a colour for one of the darker ones?

Personally... I like the idea but it doesn't match the fretboard nicely and it looks "dry" and "papery". It need to be glossier.
Maybe if the fretboard had binding it would match better.
-
Mine would be ultra glossy and I have the binding too !
It was just the colour I was mulling over....

Well, in that case, I think it's a great colour to go for. I think 8 or 11 would look great in that colour.
-
I like that colour!
And the gold hardware!
Of course, the guitar in the pic would look much better with neck binding. But I know yours would have that anyway.

I'm pretty sure it would be ok done on a strictly private basis especially if you donated a small portion to a charity of your choice.

I didn't have time to read it all, but the answer is probably in here:
http://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/gambling_sectors/lotteries.aspx (http://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/gambling_sectors/lotteries.aspx)
There is something called a "customer lottery", but it looks like it has to be not-for-profit.

Great colour! It would be very pretty with a tigerstriped top too.

And it looks like none of the prizes must be over £50 in value :(
I've only quickly skimmed it as well, though. Overall it looks like a bit too much of a pain in the @rse...
If you did go for it Jonathan, I too would be up for few tickets...
Looks like it might be a bit of a nightmare, though. I kept clicking "how much does it cost" links on that site. And each time it took me to another page that was basically saying "well, it all depends..."
-
OK - to put the raffle/sweepstake bit of the conversation to rest - I phoned the gambling commission to get proper advice:
We can't do it as a raffle without it being gambling - unless all thew money goes to a good cause and the prize has to be under £50.
We could do the "buy a certain product from us and you'll be entered into a free prize draw" type scenario because you are being entered FREE into the draw and only paying for goods that you will receive.
So maybe if we said "buy a set of BKPs from us and you'll be entered into a prize draw where you'll have a 1 in 300 chance of winning and once we've sold 300 sets of pickups we'll announce a winner, that might work.
Other than that keep playing the National Lottery..........
Anyway back to the guitars themselves

This reminds me of Suhr's Bengal and looks awesome on quilt. I prefer it with a maple fretboard, but its a great colour for sure.

Wow, these are really nice. I've played a few of Jon's Guitars (and he fixed my Les Paul), whoever gets one of these will be really, really lucky!

You could sell 600 20th anniversary plectrums for a fiver each.(any old cheapy picks and write 20 on them with a felt tip)
And then enter the lucky pick owners into the free prize draw for no.8.
-
That isn't a bad idea you know (Al Melling once sold one of his cars this way so I suspect it can be done somehow). I do think finding 600 peeps might be a challenge however.

600 peeps sound rough, but I suspect most forum folks (me included) would get more than one "ticket", so the actual number, while still high, will be quite a bit lower I suspect.

Funny you should say that, I had the word "Bengal" in my mind when I saw it and looked up Warmoth's Bengal Burst (which, as it turns out, is completely different  ). It also reminds me of some of Carvin's finishes.
Anyway, I really, really like it!

Hey chaps - been busy adding a few pages to the Feline Guitars website to try and bring it up to speed with the 20th Anniversary stuff.
Here is a link to the section we've started for it - there will be much more to follow as the builds go along and more photos get taken

Interesting! I noticed the weight relief routing isn't always exactly the same - any specific reason for that?
-
Actually there are 2 rogue photos in there , showing an older version
The ones with the weights written on them are the 20ths
We do take differing amounts to achieve approximately the same end weight
I will put up a page spotlighting this issue as my colleague Graham has written a technical piece on why and how we do do what we do.
-
Looking good Jon. I can still remember how good one of your lions were with the VH11s in. They sound so good in your guitars.
I still play my lion all the time. It gets lots of compliments and wow what guitar is that comments. :D
-
Any updates on these beauties?

Here are two more nearing completion - numbers 4 and 5 (hopefully 2 and 3 will be coming through next week)
Just quick snapshots - better pix to follow

nice colours there. i'm a total sucker for those aqua-type bursts so it's no surprise i like it, but the red one looks badass too.

Brazillian rosewood is on the list of banned tonewoods - it'd be hard enough to obtain a fingerboard of it, let alone wood to make a whole guitar.

Supposing you could obtain it, that would be one expensive guitar!
And it would weigh a $%&#ing ton.
Fire & Ice looking great, by the way!

I'll be visiting Feline soon to get a tuneomatic setup and slotted properly. I can see the visit may leave me GASsing badly.

Loving both of those. Awesome finishes!

OK, so what did you cave in and buy? :P

Had a setup on my Les Paul (Stormy Mondays, replacements for Mules turned up today), to notch the new nickel bridge. Jonathan sorted out the sticky nut and sorted out the neck relief too.
I left him with the new PRS SE to get an earvana nut fitted. The one in it at the moment is only slotted wide enough for 10s and I want .011s on it, tuned to C# standard. I thought I'd get an earvana nut fitted to check it out basically. If I like it Im gonna get one in the Les Paul. He is also going to polish the ebony neck up because I dont think they did it properly at the factory.
-
Okay - time for some quick pics of #5 (fire)

Pickups in here at present are VH2s
-
woah

That is also an amazing colour, but if forced to choose I think I'd go for Ice. :)

Worthwhile upgrades, I think. I don't know what the nuts are like on the current SEs, but on my SE EG it's made of some nasty plastic stuff which is too soft to file properly. I keep meaning to get it replaced, the basic chassis of the guitar is really good and worth upgrading.
-
The Les Paul plays and sounds better than it ever has. Thanks Jonathan. :D
-
As a colour, I prefer the reds, I think... but with those shots, Ice does seem to put itself forward VERY well.
Gorgeous looking beasts, Jonathan :D

That raspberry red colour on Fire is absolutely insanely gorgeous.

Still available to buy of course

Bee-yoo-tiful! :D
It would be tough to choose between those two. I guess I'd opt for #3 due to the interesting waves in the grain on the top.
Trivial question: Which brand of mounting rings do you use? I find most cream humbucker rings are much darker (or "pinker", or "yellower") than the very pale cream of BKP bobbins. It shouldn't be important, but it drives me nuts....
-
Trivia first - answer is we get them from Allparts
They are a good size for Gibson replacements too.
We keep them in stock too - so give a yell if you need some
-
Thanks Jon, I might want a set for the Mockingbird, to give it more of a '70s look. Can't decide whether to stick with zebra or go the whole hog with double cream.
-
any pics of the finished no.8 jonathan?
i'm sure last time i was in you said it was sold. lucky f****r whoever got that one!

Eventually it would be lovely to see all 12 finished guitars together (if possible, since some will already be sold by then)

I hope to be putting 6, 7 and 8 together in the bare wood over the next couple of weeks
Number 7 is Phil King's one
Number 8 is Mike Chan's
Eventually it would be lovely to see all 12 finished guitars together (if possible, since some will already be sold by then)
I would have loved that but number one got sold and it may be kind of hard to hold onto them once they are finished
I may have to do a Photo-call and see if we can get them all back together for a party
-
They all look great Jon. I can't wait to see the finish on mine, as those sunbursts look really nice.
-
They look all top class, but nr. 3 has such a beautiful grain. Yummy!
-
very nice :D
-
I got to play both Fire and Ice a week or so ago. Both fantastic guitars. Feline have done a fantastic job.

Blimey you sure know a way to a mans heart and his wallet don't you!
These guitars are beautiful!
I know what guitar I'm taking to my 6 hour rehearsal today :-)

-
That's the "tasteful" one.
Which isn't to say the others aren't tasteful!
Natural finish on the back?
-
Hasn't got any stain or pant on it yet Philly
But the maple is that lovely peachy colour - like number 1 was
Tempted to maybe let it stay pretty natural - albeit with a little faint bursting
-
Hasn't got any stain or pant on it yet Philly
Now I feel a fool.
I thought you were just going for a (possibly lightly-tinted) natural finish. Only now has it dawned on me it's not shiny.
-
I like it how it is now! :)
-
Yep, I like it how it is now too.
But I can see how a little faint bursting would probably be just the thing.
-
al I had done in the pix was to dampen the maple to show up the grain
Once we add a little stain , then sand out it will hopefully bring up the contrast just a little and a little burst too
Will make it look a bit like number 1 looks

Looking as good as ever!!! I'm totally bloated by GAS :D

oooh nice :D
-
How's #7 coming along? Now I'm seeing 6 & 8 looking great I can't wait to see 7!
-
she's next up Phil - been working on her already this week - fitting tuners etc
Just about to fit the wraparound bridge which didn't get done when we bulk fitted all the others as it didn't fit the same template for drilling obviously
The batch of 6-9 is interesting because most are spoken for , so I'm really keen to get them done
7 is yours
8 is Mike's (8 is lucky in Chinese numerology so Mike couldn't resist)
9 is mine (9 has a significance to me as my business has pretty much always been located at a number 9)

"The Beast"?
Edit: Looks like that would be a good colour choice for your #8, I've just seen that Gibson's replica of "The Beast" is #8 in their Collector's Choice series:

The old guitar was pretty nice....and our Lions were also very nice
Can I keep both?
PLEASE?

It's not lucky if you're Nick Leeson!
I would go for a similar colour to the Marsden LP.

Nice mods on the Vintage Guitars "lemon drop" but you shouldn't go putting a Gibson logo on one... people might think it was the real thing...

Looks like some muppet fitted them backwards...

I believe Phil Harris has it right now, do you know the story? Is he helping to find a buyer?

yes - was Phil Harris who popped in with it - he's pretty local.

Nice one. I don't think he owns it now, or does he?

nice one on the lemon drop :)

+1 on both those sentiments. RE the lemon drop, it's like having Excalibur dropped off at your workshop, that guitar is mythic.
-
:o Crikey!
I thought someone in America bought it? Can't remember the whole story.
And...... just how good is it? Is it really a "special one", or just a nice old Les Paul with an interesting history?
-
It ended up at Maverick Music Phil, and was up for sale for a cool $1million for quite a while.
Joe Bonamassa played it at the Albert Hall not long ago, and I heard that Phil Harris took it there for him. I don't know why he had it, or who currently owns it, but it may be that Phil bought it?
Jon may be sworn to secrecy ;)
-
That is impressive. I would love to play that guitar.
-
Stupid question: who is Phil Harris? :?
-
http://www.harris-hire.co.uk (http://www.harris-hire.co.uk)
-
He also has a regular column in Guitar & Bass magazine.
Apologies if he's a friend Jon, but I have to say it - I've always thought he comes across as a bit of an arse and a vintage gear snob. But maybe it's just the way way he writes.
-
Thanks for filling me in!!
It's a strange fact that the biggest vintage gear snobs have something to gain financially from vintage gear.
-
Indeed gwEm!
-
I'd really be interested in your impression of the old LP Jon. Shame you couldn't have sneaked in some comparisons of the Lion vs the LP. How's old #7 coming along?

Just wired up Number 7 Phil
Will steal a photo for you in a second......

Here is a quickie for ya Phil
-
ResoMax bridge?
-
yes - it was a concession I made for Phil as he came forward and put his money down, and we had been discussing a guitar build for such a long time.
The series being made is a "bakers dozen" -12 righties and a leftie.
As I am taking one for my own collection that leaves 12 to be owned by the playing public.
3 of these are spoken for -numbers 1, 7, 8 (9 is mine)

I think that bridge really sets it off! I love to play tune-o-matics, but the looks of a wraparound is just so pretty. You get to show off more of that pretty body! 8)
-
I'd die happy if I'd ever get the chance to play Gary Moores LP... Jon you're a lucky fella.
And the Lions are looking stunning!
-
if you have a moment i would be interested to see current pictures for the guitars currently unspoken for?
Here is the full lineup gwEm - a whole bunch of single-cut porn.
The darker maple ones show up better in their unpainted form
The paler fiddleback flame-tops will really come to life once we start staining and lacquering them.

I'm still liking the exotically-coloured ones, 4 and 5, best. :)
-
Number 4 went today - gonna miss that one
-
Man, they are coming along amazingly. Love 3 and my fav, 11. Those patterns....stunning. I am so gonna be in line for the 30th anniversary models. Or the quarter of a century if all goes well ;)
-
Simply stunning. i think if i ever go over the pond i'll budget a feline guitar in my spare cash :)
-
They all look totally gorgeous. Really really nice craftmanship. If I were rich...
-
Hi Jon,
They're all looking stunning. Did you decide on the pickups for them all yet? Number 2 reminds me of my 53 conversion:

2 is nice indeed. thanks for sharing the images!
-
Hi Jon,
They're all looking stunning. Did you decide on the pickups for them all yet?
Cheers
Phil
I've just listed their pickup options
The unpainted ones we are just finalising colour ideas
Number 6 almost doesn't need any colour - maybe a slight burst like number 1 had
Number 7 for Phil is having a Kossof lemondrop type burst
(http://www.dv247.com/assets/products/90683_l.jpg)
Number 8 may have a cherry burst or be red colour - need to check with Mike
Number 9 will have the grain brought out with a bit of double staining and maybe a slight burst , but not much
Number 10 has a nice old fashioned flame and I thought a burst like Gary Rossington (Skynard) had
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/20th%20anniversary%20Lion/front/10_zps9d5c4da9.jpg)
Number 11 is a bit of a challenge as the grain has an effect like a boat wake, and I'd be tempted to try an aqua marine type colour, but for the peachy colour of the maple
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/20th%20anniversary%20Lion/front/11_zps1bd18f75.jpg)
Maybe the PRS Dragon Breath scheme would work
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/PRS-Private-Stock-4061-Singlecut-58-Signature-Amber-Dragons-Breath-NEW-/00/s/NTAwWDUwMA==/$T2eC16F,!)cE9s4PsM5tBQv6N!qus!~~60_35.JPG)
Number 12
Any ideas?
I thought an Emerald green would be a nice touch
Southpaw
Again - open to ideas
Either a very traditional tobacco burst, or an aqua like number 4
-
The PRS Dragon Breath! 100% YES. :o
-
What about a charcoal one like the back of one of you recently guitars (can't remember which one)?
Defenitely aqua marine instead of dragon breath for number 11!
-
Hi Jon, just wondering if you'd tried the BK Anniversary pickups in any of the 2012 Lion Anniversaries?
-
3 more came back from paint tonight - numbers 7,8, and 9
I got number 9 together quickly (couldn't help myself)

Click on pics and you'll get a bigger view hopefully
Pics of 7 (Phil King's one) and number 8 (Mi,e Chan ) will follow as soon as I can get them together
-
Another stunning piece of guitar. Sooooo beautiful!

-
Just WOW!
-
They are amazing -stunning guitars.
-
Just given number 9 it's first loud play through an amp since it came back from paint and all I can say is WOW!
Think I have a new favourite axe in the house.
Still needs a fret dress but it feels great!
-
Lovely colour!
-
Here is Phil's baby (number 7) - still awaiting fret dress
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/739975_596745910372497_1268075233_o.jpg)
And number 8 coming along with all the hardware being added. (Mike went for a classic cherry sunburst)
-
Number 7 and 8 are super good lookers as all the others. I like 7 most of the two as I'm not that fond of the classic cherry sunburst color. Funilly enough my own LP clone is... cherry sunburst
-
I have followed this thread since the very beginning and still every new picture just sends my jaw towards the center of the earth!
DAT 8!!! DAT FREAKING 8! WOOOOW!!!!
-
really nice, as usual :)
-

I'm not a cherry sunburst fan either, but on an LP Custom - which this resembles, at least with the ebony board and block markers - it has that Ace Frehley vibe, which I do like. :)
-
I prefer that faded burst of no 7, but both great lookers!
-
Not a big cherry burst fan myself but it looks sweet on no.8.
Looking at no.8 is a bit like looking through one of those cardboard tube kaleidoscope thingy's you had as a kid. :crazy2:
Love it Jonathan!!!
-
9 is gorgeous.
7 is my "stock image" of an LP with wood grain showing through - so probably my personal favourite.
8 looks great, but not quite what I'd go for grain-wise - I imagine the colours/effects are stunning in real life, though.
-
Just a joint shot of 7 and 8
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/1398398_596418430405245_1620022355_o.jpg)
-
The top on #8 is RAD! Exactly how I like my tops, really interesting. The perfect flames and quilts get fatiguing 8)
-

I like them Jon - you've captured the carved tops nicely with the light shining off them.
-
Both of them look stunning, but I do like the finish on #7 more - I can't wait to pick it up and really play it!
-
Some more movement - this time #10 and #12

-
Love those colours, especially #12!
-
Love the 10. Great warm colour and the pattern is amazing with its vertical lines in there.
-
Both 10 and 12 looks stunning. My girlfriend's favourite color is green so maybe I can persuade her to buy me this gorgeous looking axe.
-
They both look great. Of the two, I'd prefer no 10 however it is a close run thing.
-
I prefer #12 - but then I have a sunburst one!
-
Those are coming along very nicely. Phils Number 7 from the previous page reminds me a bit of Gary Moores LP :D

Yes it does somewhat

The things I'd do to play Gary Moores LP only once... Jonathan, you're a lucky fella
-
I picked up #7 yesterday and got a good look at 8 & 12. They both look great, but #7 is fantastic. I've been playing it for a couple of hours now and it is great. I am over here and have to get one of my old amps up and running (which I'll do tomorrow), then I will really get down to hearing it properly. However, the setup and finish is fantastic. If anyone is still sitting on the fence about getting one of these, then do yourself a favour and go see Jonathan, you won't be disappointed.
-
was nice to see you Phil
Really glad you are enjoying the Lion - thankyou for the testimonial.
There are a few left in the 20ths (5 right handed and a Southpaw) - would suggest getting your name down if you are tempted.
-
Again amazing finishes. The Green/Moore Lion is stunning.
-
Again amazing finishes.
The Green/Moore Lion is stunning.
I take it those are two separate statements as I had nothing to do with the Peter Green/Gary Moore LP other than admire it. (and yes it is a beauty)

I got that. The aged Lemon Drop finish is nevertheless a nice eyewink.
-
Must admit that I'm really liking 10 & 12 (and Phil's one too if I'm honest).
I checked down the side of the sofa but sadly I'm about £2998 short... :(

-
WOW!!! They're all equally stunning and I wouldn't know which one to pick over the other. What pickups have you thrown in? Do number 12 by any chance have Emeralds?
-
It would have to be No. 12, just for the colour!
-
why zebraaaaa whyyyyyyy
-
It's only zebra for this series (it was my own personal choice) - you can have any colour combo you like for the pickups - heck you could even have us change what's in one of these if you were putting the money down to buy one.
-
haha i know. i'm just giving you a hard time.
that green is beautiful by the way
-
Lovely guitars, stunning finishes. Number 9 has the most beautiful top. The green strikes me. I'm not so into green, but this one looks fab close-up.
-
Stunningly beautiful.
-
You can stop solidifying your place in my mind now Jonathan. Actually you can stop like 1 1/2 years ago.
Seriously, all just so wonderful. Out of those No 9 kills it for me. That maple...oh my.
-

Those are all stunning, but I particularly like the Green and Red 1s!
-
Man... that first purple one  I need money!!
-
Excellent craftmanship Jonathan. Those finishes are all beautiful. The grain on the BD-loaded honeyburst is imo very special, and something different than straight tigerstripes.
-
Man... that first purple one  I need money!!
We call that one The Matterhorn because the grain and the way we have stained it makes it look like that mountain.

The one with the Black Dogs has amazing grain. It actually looks more intense when viewed from another angle.......strangely enough from the playing position viewpoint it looks the most stunning.

Visually this guitar will never get boring, even after 10 years. I bet the sound will be on par with that beautiful top.
-
Like the mountain one, but it'd be the Black Dog loaded one for me every time. Simply stunning.
-
All seven are stunningly beautiful. I wish I had 3000£ that needed spending pronto.
-
So after you take the photos, what are you doing to them in photoshop? ;)
-
I don't use photoshop ......just Apple Aperture, and all I do is to get the raw images to look like they did to my naked eye, so reduce glare, tweak definition and contrast of the image.
The rest I try to rely upon the lighting I use to do.
-
You really build beautiful guitars Jonathan.
-
I had a feeling there was a slight contrast or saturation tweak, I don't mind it when it's done tastefully as you're not trying to "fix it in the mix"
-
Loving the Emeralds one Jonathan
