Title: SG pickups for stoner/sludge/modern black sabbath sound
Post by: Dandelion on October 04, 2012, 11:05:43 AM
Hi,

I'm looking to change the pickups of my SG. The 490 R/498T are OK but I think I could have a better sound with aftermarket pickups.
I also have a Telecaster for alternative/clean sounds and a Les Paul for "heavy" classic rock sounds (with Super Distortion and PAF 36). I'm looking for something else for the SG.
I would like good pickups for stoner/sludge/modern Sabbath sound (think Soundgarden (not DOTU), Down, COC, Monster Magnet, Mastodon etc.). A good pickup for low tunings in bridge, not too tight, not too muddy, and a nice neck pickup kind of 59/PAF/Pearly Gates...Not too modern, not too vintage ;)

Do you have any advices ?

Thanks

A humbucker version of the pig90 for the bridge would deliver some good stoner/sludge tones. The mule neck will give you PAF tones in spades. I don't know if the two are a good match though.

Riff Raff summary sounds cool. Is it like the SD Pearly Gates ?

Miracle Man sounds pretty heavy and tight. It's not too tight for sludge ? It sounds like a SD Distorsion ?

I already have a P90 in the neck of my Telecaster, I like it but it's a little bit muddy with low tunings, as a neck I think it's OK for clean parts but as a bridge, I don't know...

I think the pearly gates question has been discussed some times here
contenders were the riff raff, stormy monday, mule and pg blues
you'll probably be happy with any of these

miracle sounds great for down, mastodon and corrosion
no, thank god it doesn't sound like a sh-6

I'd still go with the warpig anyway

Thanks. I'll check them.

You think there are equal in a SG body ?
