Yup. I'd much rather see a nice finish on the body itself.

Change the strings.   :P

Seriously? How about the tuning pegs or the nut? You can get tuners by Planet Waves that not only lock the string in but they also cut the string as you wind it on, so you don't ever need wire cutters changing the strings again. And there are special nuts that help the guitar sound in tune better along the whole length of the string. I think the brand is Earvana.

Or you could always get it refretted, if the frets aren't exactly what you want. I like big fret wire, like the 6100 or 6150 size. When I buy a new Strat I like to get that stuff put on.

Then there're Graphtech bridge saddles. They're handy sometimes, but not exactly a necessity.

haha a nice finish... well my melody maker doesnt exactly have the smoothest of finishes thats partly why i want to snazz it up another way

yer i was considering locking tuners....
and i heard about people getting re'frets but how much does that cost exactly? to get some huge frets...? im betting its pretty damn expensive

woops just realised i missed out feline's and monkeys very worthy opinions....

a set-up was another thing i was considering but two things were bothering me about that- 1.) is the difference really that noticeable
2.) im betting they're frigging expensive to get a decent one (im definately not getting it done at machinehead thats for sure...)

and monkey all your suggestions would be excellent except i dunno wanna screw up my guitar completely which i would be scared of doing....

how do you re-paint a guitar safely lol....?

oh yer and what about a stetsbar???? www.stetsbar.com

anyone every used one? they seem like the coolest lp mod in the world...ever.

bloomin expensive i know... but what a feature it would be....

ANY time you liked you could just swap it in/out for a normal tune-a-matic
and if you wanted to sell the guitar but keep the trem or vice versa then you could do so easily. really want one now...

but does anyone have info about:

1.)refretting
2.)pro set-ups
3.)and that earvana nut- cant find one to buy in the uk anywhere.

maybe i could get a feline set-up? do you even do set-ups feline? and if so how much...?

Not that interesting a story really.  He's an ex-Commodore64 gamer, and I help run a forum for Jeff Minter aka Yak, who was (and is) kinda influential in the video game arena.  Plus he's quite into the c64 remix scene, and I know people involved in that scene.

And, yes, we are all big kids.  Who wants to grow up, eh?!  That's boring.  ;)

I really wouldn't do too much to your Melody Maker, I mean, it sounds a beast and probably plays well, so isn't that enough? If it holds tune alright, no need for locking tuners. The one thing I'd consider'd be a Bigsby, but they're bleedin' expensive, and you need to get rolling saddles for your bridge, as well as a decent nut, and locking tuners...

Personally, mate, I'd just go with a £1.50 plectrum holder to stick to the back of the headstock. Sacralige, maybe, but very functional. I have one inside the soundhole of my Gretsch.

lol i spose your right. but as much as i like its retro-blandness i just feel like it needs something doing to it aesthetically...

well actually 'needs' is the wrong word because like you were saying it doesnt actually 'need' much.

and a bigsby or a stetsbar was something that i was definately considering...

well i think about it all.... i havent got any money at the moment anyway so im not in a rush to decide.

thanks for all the info guys.
