I'm not too up on HBs. Afghan might have some good insight though as he is a massive fan of a tight bottom end.

Looks like Afghan had responded to a similar question from you previously (6 years ago!)

Billy Duffy is 100% Duncan JBs in all but his white Gretch Falcon.

Therefore BKP Holydiver or Rebel Yell.

Good luck it's a great tone!

I think you've described the RY very well.

I play a couple of Cult songs in my band and I use Rebel Yells in an all mahogany guitar. They nail the tone perfectly. Last night I did a short gig with a scratch band and decided on a whim to take my SG with a JB in the bridge. Haven't
gigged this guitar for about 3 years and I really missed my RYs. They have much more punch than a JB even though the output isn't as high.

To me it sounds like you made the right choice with the Rebel Yells. Hope you like them. I do.

Cheers Stephan

Just noticed you're using a Matchless DC30. Aren't they rather bright amps ? If so, you may have to do a bit of tweaking (height mainly) to get the best out of the RYs. I had to mess around with mine a lot but I got there in the end. Let us know how it goes.

Got my ry today will fit them in next few days . The dc 30 is bright I hope I made the right pickup choice but the guitar is a bit dark being a 57 custom .how do I adjust the pickup to get the best out of them it is something I never really done befor I just set them quite close to the string but not to close as to make wolf notes ect . Any advice on setting them up thanks

I start with 3 mm with the string pressed on the 12th note. Then I adjust down to find the sweet spot. The RY is quite bright, but on top of that BKP's have enormous clarity you have to get used to. Especially the RY is sensitive for the right height. There are enough RY-owners here to give you some advice. I guess you have to adjust the amp-eq a bit too.

I've never messed around with pickup height to the degree that I did with my RYs. Part of it was fascination with the very different tones that can be had at different heights. I would suggest approaching from both directions i.e. set the pickups high and get used to how they sound while experimenting with your amp settings. Then set them as low as they will go and do the same thing. This will give you an idea of the extremes and then you can work towards your preferred height.

Do it one pickup at a time. Personally I'd start with the bridge because I spend most of my time using the bridge pickup.  I was initially taken aback by the brightness of the RYs but when you are able to appreciate what it does for your live sound it makes a lot of sense. The RYs seem happiest to me with a lot of power amp volume and medium gain levels. Lil' Devil has never sounded so good.

Well got my ry in the les Paul only had a quick play with the band sond good very bright treble on bridge pickup but that could also be the matchless as it can sound very piecing sometimes. It is going to take time to get my rig set need time to play with tone controls on drive pedals. But the ry do sound good just a bit of tweaking needed. I will post photo of guitar and rig when get a bit more time.

A pickup this awesome will require you to change the settings for your previous, obsolete pickups of course!

If that doesn't do the trick, others pots an capacitors can tame the RY a bit.
