Heard yesterday that my local of 25 years is being 're-developed' as a GASTROPUB. I am in a state of shock.
-
That is not good. I am at the Welly tomorrow night btw.
-
What type of gastropub is it, and what type of local was it?
Nothing wrong with a "gastropub" if it's a nice little independently-run place with good food plus a decent bar, is there?
-
I'm with Philly (and not for the first time, <shock!>), if it has good ales on tap and a decent vibe, I'm all for gastropubs. Now what I can't stand is 'sports bars.' It's fine if you have no taste buds and think Fosters is fit for human consumption, and don't mind sitting in a shite hole for a few hours, but really, no ales in these places and a bunch of cretins talking about nothing of significance very loudly... no thanks :)

I am very active in the "lobby" group trying to get politicians to do something to help the pub trade.
To me it's sad when a pub closes but at least this is still open for now.
Change always happend but it's all about the beer for me and if the ale is good I'm a happy man.
The other great shame is when an historic pub interior is gutted out and lost forever.. :(

Unfortunately, very few 'gastropubs' are actually 'gastropubs' - but rather chain owned imitations with pre-made food brought in by Whitbread or Greene King or whoever. Years ago I used to go to the Eagle on Farringdon Road for lunch (apparently the pub that kicked off the gastropub craze) on a Friday and it was a great venue - good beer and great food - a true gastropub should not let the food get in the way of the beer, but all too often, it is to make up for the fact that the pub aspect has died and the economic thing to do (according to the accountants at central office) is to stick a clone restaurant in what remains.
Not been back to the Eagle for a few years as I no longer drink  .
-
Ah, back in the day I went to the Eagle too... Food was indeed VERY good.
It did become more of a restaurant than a pub though.

Oh yeah, absolutely. That's why I wanted to know more about Richard's new "gastropub".

Hi 38th - sadly I can't make The Welly tonight but I shall be at the Malt Shovel tomorrow - Saturday (20th). Looked up Alter Ego and realise I know your bass player Keith. I worked in Worthing with him for 4 years. He asked me to try out for the band some time back but I couldn't consider it because you were rehearsing in Horsham I think and I have no transport. Were you on the CD I heard a year or so ago ? I was very impressed - great stuff.
Anyhow - Gastro pubs. To me a pub that sells food = beer + food. A restaurant = food + beer. Gastropub = ghastly hybrid that fails to be either a pub or a restaurant. And it is part of a chain that own about 70 pubs in Brighton and try and do everything as cheaply as possible. It's the end of the world as I know it.
-
Hi Richard- yes that would have been me and yes we do rehearse in Horsham. Pity I am playing at the Queens Head tomorrow night.
As for gastropubs- I am open minded- depends upon how they execute the idea. If they stop having bands then I am naturally not too keen but so many are struggling and I guess they have to do what they have to do. For some reason Horsham seems to have a plethora of Italian eating establishments- I don't mean that we consume Italians ( before some smart ar*e pipes up- like I would if it wasn't me writing this). As I am particularly keen on Italian food, I am rather delighted with the choice.

I think we should return to 70's pub food: plain, salt & vinegar or cheese & onion crisps, salted peanuts, and pork scratchings.

Heard yesterday that my local of 25 years is being 're-developed' as a GASTROPUB. I am in a state of shock.
I'm a (large) Yorkshireman and I like my pub food. I accidentally went in a gastropub in Reading and ordered pie, chips and a pint. I was not a very happy chappy with what (little) they brought. Did the $%ing size of me and my accent not ring any alarm bells? I think my comment of 'where's the rest of it?' went down as well as expected.

There is a pub i have been going to in Burton since i was 14, used to be a dingy rocker pub. It used to be an abbey so was naturally called 'The Abbey'.
Its the actual birthplace of brewing in Burton and therefore Burton itself. It was even on an episode of time team ;)
Its now a fancy gastropub/restaurant. and the name they chose - 'The Winery'
I must admit they do good food and even a decent pint - but i do wonder why they could not have kept a little bit of heritage
but yeah - now i work for the major brewer in the town and we are definitely feeling the pinch of the declining pub trade. Pubs either need to be very good, or offer something different. they need to attract people from miles around to stand any chance of profitability - no room for the local pub for local people any more and not much profit in just selling beer

Yeah Frank, and lets not forget Sunday specials like Chicken in a basket or scampi and chips.
-
The problem is that it £3.35 for a pint these days, and they wonder why no bugger goes any more...

its about 40% tax, then some for the landlord and the actual increase in cost of materials, grain has gone up massively in the last few years.
I was in a meeting recently where we were actually told it was good we managed to get 1p profit per pint we brew.
the thing that annoys me is the tax rate paid on beer (set by uk government) which is much higher than wine or cider (set by EU)

Sadly e-petitions are worth about as much as the paper they're not written on. We had one get at least half a million signatures and it was just kicked out straight out. Which essentially proved the utter pointlessness of them.
Politicians = liars, thieves and w**kers interested in their own progression/power rather than the people they're supposed to represent. No politician should ever want to be a politician as far as I'm concerned. It certainly shouldn't be a f**king career path.
Then again I just left the bank I worked for for pretty much the same reason. Same breed of w**kers are in charge of them. No wonder the country is in the shite.

Hmmm, sorry about that. I have an issue with people who can steal, give it back and say sorry when they're caught and get away with it. Especially if you or I did it we'd go to jail. I view them on the same sort of level as criminals, thugs and arseholes...
...and nimbys. I really bloody hate nimbys. ...and French Trafpol who are only a step away from nazis.

Which pub was that? I'm from around the Reading area but don't frequent pubs there very often.

Can't remember but it was on the river near a bridge...

Good to see offensive food is censored on this forum; an 8 year old could have access to this.

Then perhaps the answer is ANCHOVY ANARCHY !!

The landlords I speak to when gigging all sing the same tune - the breweries are squeezing them dry and they're barely making ends meet.
-
I like pubs that happen to have good food.
To me a 'gastropub' suggests more of a restaurant type thing, with a pub-theme.. And I don't like those at all - poncey small portions and all that.

from the brewery perspective its the large buying groups (chain pups and supermarkets) squeezing us dry and a lot of independent pubs playing breweries off against each other to get the best deals.
you cant just blame breweries for the number of pubs that have to shut. prices of beer have gone up, but so have the prices of raw ingredients and the amount of tax.

and everyone is trying to save money, so less people drink all night in pubs
-
Happy to say the plans to change my local have been shelved for the time being. More gigs for my band at one of the best venues we get to play at.

The type of gastropubs I have in mind don't have "poncey small portions", they just have good food, cooked fresh on the premises, by someone who actually knows how to cook.
As opposed to the frozen, boil-in-the-bag rubbish served by most pub chains.

10 days until my local reopens:
http://www.herculesrevived.co.uk/
I'm glad it's reopening as I can see it from my front room and now I can stop thinking about buying it myself. Rumor has it that someone from the next village bought it for their son as a wedding present and there's no competing with that :?
-
Tonemonkey, I live 50 yards from my local and think myself lucky but you can see your from your front room ? Looks like a really cool pub as well. How long has it been closed ?
-
It's been closed about 18 months or so from what I'm told, but I only moved here in February so it was closed when I got here. It used to have a good reputation, so I hope they do it justice. They're definitely doing a lot of work there and the village is full of builders vans.
I'm fortunate that I'm far enough away not to hear it, I'm probably about the same distance away as you are. Here's a streetview snip, pub is on the left, my house is at the end of the yellow line.
It's a nice easy drunken walk home.
-
What's with all the thread revivals recently??? And why the worst ones?!!
-
No threads about pubs is a bad thread :D

Well, those sound like fine establishments indeed. I guess I think of something more like a restaurant when I think of a gastropub. I'm sure you know the type of place I'm driving at though, its all a question of terms innit ;)

The ones I'm thinking of are usually in remote locations somewhere in the countryside, which you can't possibly get to without driving (or getting a lift in my case). I like them better than proper posh restaurants, to be honest.
