Title: NGD: PRS Collection V. That's it, game over.
Post by: Twinfan on October 19, 2012, 04:04:26 PM
Right, I'll just quickly check my dream/perfect guitar specs:

* PRS McCarty body - check
* Flame top - check
* Pernambuco neck - check
* PRS "Pattern" neck profile - check
* Woods selected by Paul Reed Smith himself - check
* 25" scale length - check
* PRS 408 pickup system - check
* Stop tail - check
* Nitro finish - check
* Blue/green in colour - check
* Mixed hardware - check
* Around 7.5-8lbs in weight, not too heavy and not too light - check
* Ridiculous sustain and harmonic overtones - check
* Final play test and sign off by Paul Reed Smith himself - check

I guess that makes it my dream guitar then?

If I'm being super picky then I'd prefer slightly wider and less straight flame, but I'm not going to argue with mother nature  :)  I also prefer birds to celtic knots, but I have enough of those already  ;)

It sounds fabulous - clear, bright and 3D, very high-definition, with a perfect balance of bite and fullness.  My initial thoughts are that it beats "The Green Manalishi" by a nose, buy I have a feeling the more I play it the wider the gap will become.  Even played clean, which I rarely do, it just rings and rings and sounds absolutely glorious.

To quote myself:

I'm completely and utterly done with buying gear.

May I introduce "Sir Charles" - "Chuck" as he's known informally - in honour of him arriving yesterday on a certain Mr Berry's 86th birthday  :D  (I'll get some decent pics up later when I get some proper ones)

PRS aren't my thing at all but those two both look like STUNNING pieces of engineering and design.

You're a lucky man!

I've just been playing Chuck and Mrs Twinfan walked into the room to say "That guitar just SINGS!".  I married a good 'un  :D  And she's right.

It really is something else.

I still really don't like the look of the new PRS pickups. If they had less wonky ones, I'd say they looked "AMAZING!".
With them, I'll have to settle for "They look lovely; I'm only slightly jeleous".

Congrats!

Meh, looks don't really matter when they sound this good!  ;)

I personally think they look great, and at pub gigs you get old-skool gutiarists with really quizzical looks on their faces!  :lol:

Although that guitar is the absolute opposite of what i look for in my guitars in some ways, it is a stunning guitar. I think the color is great and it looks flawless (I won't comment on the gold/nickel hardware). I like the inlays more than the birds.

I'm loving the fact that above all it sounds like a choir of angels, but also that they didn't ruin it with shedloads of abalone purfling and headstock bindings.  There's nothing OTT and garish on it.

Nice score though Dave - genuinely very happy for you. I know you had a few moments of uncertainty about spending that amount of money on a guitar. Sounds like you made the right decision!

Maybe not anymore! I think once you've got your dream guitar it would be hard to find something to top it (and maybe hard to find the £s too)

I'm still not sure what my dream guitar is. Mabe I'll need to do a Dave style quest to figure it out (although my money would be on some sort of tele or strat)

I still couldn't find now what the hell is a "pernambuco" neck
pernambuco is the name of a brazilian state
what you call "brazilian rosewood" is our "jacarandá-da-bahia" (and Bahia is the state that I live in)
does anyone know the species name of the pernambuco wood?

my favorite looking PRS is that Daniel John's old weird green custom 24
couldn't find out the exact finish name
I saw one on ebay a year ago and couldn't close the page for days

The ceaseless exploitation of brazilwood (caesalpinia echinata Lam., known in the bow business as Pernambuco wood) on the coast of Brazil between 1501 and 1857 was responsible not only for the name given to the land and its people. But it also was determining factor in the foundation of many population centers in colonial times, and consequently, in the genocide of indigenous nations who previously inhabit this land. The extractive economic model, based initially on cheap native labor and then later utilizing African slaves until the middle of the imperial period, was responsible for the enrichment of many European countries and a decisive factor in the devastation of immense tracts of Atlantic forest.The scarcity of historical and botanical information about brazilwood (also known as Pernambuco wood) has created an air of mystery concerning the original geographic distribution of this important species. The pioneer role which Pernambuco wood played in the Portuguese colonization of the new world also added to the mainly of the 16th and 17th century, contains data that, even today are difficult to prove scientifically.

The predatory exploration that brought this species to the brink of extinction has, without a doubt, been the main obstacle in precisely evaluating available historical and botanical information. This is an opportune moment, therefore, to present more precise information, in order to emphasize the degree to which this rare example of the Brazilian flora is threatened and to promote the need for its preservation. Several protective measure have already been taken, although in most cases these effort lack sufficient criteria which would guarantee these species survival in the natural population and effective conservation of its gene bank. The scarcity of historical and botanical information about brazilwood (also known as Pernambuco wood) has created an air of mystery concerning  the original geographic distribution of this important species. Uh oh.... holy cr@p!!! What the F is the one on the far right? Have I missed one of your NGD's or something? Wow... just WOW!  8)

I never announced it here on the forum, I don't tell you guys everything  ;)  It's a Signature Limited from the run of 400 released earlier this year in the colour Eriza Verde.

I use Nori (PS with trem) and Kermit (Sig Ltd) (#1 and #2 respectively) as my main gigging guitars. The Green Manalishi (Rainforest PS Sig) and Sir Charles (Collection V) are my go-tos at home. I'd like to try one of the new 408 Standard Rosewoods with a stoptail at some point, but with the non-Sig switching I'm not convinced I'd bond with it. A Modern Eagle 408 with trem will be worth me trying when one comes out too.

Tonally, I'm finding:

* Kermit - very strong in the midrange, with a slight "honk". A little harshness on the highs and it misses the lowest lows of the PS models. Great for Drop D, which is how I mainly use it.

* Nori - bright yet dark and thick, more lower midrange than the others. Works really well live with my Bogner XTC Classic quarter stack with V30s and used for 90-95% of my gig tracks. The workhorse.

* Green Manalishi - Open and clear, with the best qualities of Nori and Kermit. 'Clean' sounding with gain, open and pretty balanced with a slight upper midrange cut. Very balanced between neck/bridge tone too.

* Sir Charles - as per The Green Manalishi but with more of everything. More sustain, more clarity, more harmonic richness and a big roundness to the tone. Amazing touch sensitivity and real singing vocal quality to every note. Up the high end, and to quote my wife, "it sounds like the strings are 'O' thick!". The neck pickup has a real purring warmth and the bridge has bite and snarl, without ever sounding flabby or harsh. Such a "musical" sounding guitar - what an instrument.

I really hope Paul doesn't come up with anything to "better" 408s and/or pernambuco - I don't think my finances could stand it. As it is, I'm going to enjoy these guys as much as I possibly can  :D

Have you tried any 408s Phil?  I guess they're a bit like relics - you can either get past the looks or you can't, and for some that's a deal breaker.

Hi Dave, I haven't tried them, and I know I should, but it's always hard to tell the sound in a shop.  I was looking at an Artist V in Eriza Verde, which I was seriously thinking of getting, but decided on the Anniversary Lion for  now.  I was also very tempted to get your private stock when you had it up for sale, but I've just spent a lot of money on the house, so will have to wait to see what next year brings (or sell some guitars, since I really do have too many!).

It's a shame you're not local, you would have been very welcome to try my guitars out for size.  If you're in the UK sometime and fancy a visit just drop me a PM.

I think I'm going to try selling my PRS Henderson again, which will drop me down to 9 guitars.  I'm happy when I'm in single figures!

Gotta say, even though I'm sure Chuck is the better player by miles, Manalishi is definitely my favorite to look at. Sounds like Kermit is your most "Les Paul" type of the 4.

I agree - Manalishi is the best looker for me too.  Chuck has cleanliness of playability by a nose, but it's very close across all of them.  None of them are Les Paul-ish to be honest, they're all very PRS  :)

I merely assumed that the cords on the waistband had come detached from the curtain rings on his chest

Nipple rings always make me feel queasy.

Getting the piercings would be horrible enough, but the thought of something pulling on them.... ugh!  :?

He does look rather excited in a 'give me the damn guitar' kind of way ;)

The more I think about it, the more I think he should have presented it to him on a cushion... If you're going to do it, do it right!

It was kinda tricky to say no to being filmed, I didn't really want to do it though  :oops:

That was just before I left, and I needed to head off ASAP as I was working that afternoon and time was tight!

mini-HB neck, and full-HB bridge is I think a very good combination.

Hardly in the same league, but I have a Flying V faded I modified to have that combo and its extremely well balanced tonally. These 408 models look very well designed (if you like that sort of thing(!)).

Really nice collection there Dave!

i agree, my favourite neck pickup is the Mini humbucker in my Les Paul Deluxe.  in an ideal world it would have a full size 'bucker at the bridge, but i'm not routing out a 40 year old guitar!

i'll reiterate, your group of PRS guitars is stunning, Dave.  i'm glad you've found yourself in a position to be able to get them together, and it's obvious how much pleasure you get from them.  we all know that however satisfied we are with our gear, eventually something appears that tempts us!  but i think it might be a little longer than usual before you're showing us your next baby ;)

I have an Agile LP which Philking modified for me to that setup. Its what opened my eyes to the combination. Its good to see PRS offering it 'as stock' on one of their models.

yes it is his. i also thought it had a double creme super distortion. at some point i saw images where it had a dimarzio DLX in the neck as well. this is the configuration as of 2010/11 though - phillyq pointed out to me that hes tried a few setups in there. he played the goldtop when i went to see them last year at the O2! i happen to think it looks rather cool  8)

Yeah, a humbucker ring is barely wide enough to cover a P-90 routing.

But mounting rings do vary in size a little bit, Allparts ones aren't quite the same size as WD, and the ones they sell for "import" guitars are a little bigger.  I'm sure it would be possible to get a wider one for a perfect fit.

It is a very cool look, but I would be also be reluctant to route a P-90 guitar for a humbucker.  I've got a few different DiMarzio DLX models and various Firebird pickups, it would be interesting to try different combinations of those (but of course I'll never get round to it!)

You could always grab a cheap BFG Gibson LP and experiment with pickups  ;)

They're bloody ugly, though, aren't they?

I'd end up changing all the parts.... which is pretty much what I do on most guitars, come to think of it.  :|

The top on the BFG always reminds me of the inside of a melon skin when someone's really tried to eat all the flesh and has been scr@ping at it with their teeth. Not ultimately what I look for in a guitar top in all honesty.
